An older Japanese friend provided me with a nice kimono to wear as I walked around the temples in Kyoto during the week of お正月. It had gold thread all throughout. Many Japanese people stopped me to ask about the kimono and to take pictures. That was 40 years ago. 懐かしい❗

I recently bought a black one. I want to wear it with my Vans. I realize it won’t be traditional but my appreciation for Japanese culture while being westerner. Some people might see it as strange but if you appreciate that culture it’s a compliment. A few years ago I got very excited when I saw kimonos with Nordic and Baltic patterns. I was flattered that someone in Japan was using patterns of my heritage. I saw it as a compliment because it shows that they like that culture. It wasn’t cultural appropriation whatever that is. It’s cultural appreciation infused with the local culture.

I love wearing them! My American friends Mark, Christopher, Jack, Steve, Mike, Sean, Jonathan, Nicholas and Thelma love kimonos. Mark, Christopher and Thelma love them as much as I do. Whenever I send photos of kimono, they would just give a heart emoji. And they also make us to feel and stay young! 👘

I think that, any female at all looks beautiful when they wear a kimono, whether they are Japanese or a foreigner. It is such a lovely item of clothing to wear, it makes any female look like a Princess.

Excellent video. I find it interesting to get closer to the Japanese by understanding many of their habits. I noticed that the more you know about the behaviors they consider important (rules of etiquette), the better you can be treated.. Hugs from Brazil

Interesting video. Just some advice, lower the background music by about 8 or 10db during the editing.

When I was in Japan I had a Kimono Photoshooting with Inkimono (the artist in question) in Asakusa. It was insane how many people indirectly complimented me. I heard a lot of quiet "Cute" "Beautiful" and similar words. It was lovely how open people were to me walking around in it during the shoot.
Yuriko-chan, I love your videos but I think it's better not to use any background music because it's too loud and we can't put any focus/attention to the interviewer in your video. Arigatooooo :) Keep inspiring ya!
"How do foreigners feel about wearing traditional Japanese kimonos?" Isn't this title backwards? The English doesn't make sense in relation to the vid.

It's true! I hadn't noticed that 😂 I appreciate your comment!!!
Am I the only person who sees the irony and hypocrisy of people asking and answering this question while wearing western style clothing?

I think it's maybe people of Japanese ancestry in western countries that sometimes resent non Japanese wearing kimono. Because they experienced a lot of discrimination in the past, I imagine it feels unfair too see people from the dominant group enjoy a part of your heritage you suppressed in order to fit in. (I'm not of Japanese descent and don't want to speak for them, it's just my observation.)
@metamon2704 Жыл бұрын
Nah it's just an American thing, they trend go gatekeep things because of their 'heritage' - like if you are an American of Japanese decent but don't speak the language or have even visited Japan what right do you have to say other people can't wear a kimino.

People, from English speaking countries especially, often like to gate keep as a way to discriminate against others. I'm Japanese but not from Japan. I'm not gonna tell people they can't partake in Japanese culture when I'm not even from Japan. But that seems to be the most common occurrence. Trying to gatekeep things from a culture they don't even come from. Or even when they do, constantly doing, wearing, eating things from many other cultures themselves while also trying to gatekeep.
@IzumiIkeda Жыл бұрын
If anything, what's most important is what people from the actual culture think. Not salty people who resort to trying to punish whole groups of people by gatekeeping because of discrimination they may have experienced from specific individuals in the past. Further discriminating does not solve discrimination. But most people who do this are not even trying to stop discrimination.
