Nice! What a cool comment. I save ones like this. The thing to know about mechatronics engineering is that there are only 28 programs in the USA. So you will probably have to choose EE or ME and then focus in MTREs for your concentration. The biggest thing you can start doing for engineering career is learn to code. The more momentum you have there, the better. And if you can do electrical engineering, you can do anything you want within mechatronics / robotics. @@kesavdarshan hey thanks for the comment. Here are the best languages for mechatronics engineers. There is no simple answer to this. if you ask "What's the best programming language for mechatronics/robotics?" to a whole roomful of professionals will give different answers. I find most mechatronics engineering enthusiasts are striving for a career in robotics, so this reply pertains to that. Electronic engineers will give a different answer from industrial robotic technicians. Computer vision programmers will give a different answer from cognitive roboticists. In the end, the answer which most intelligent people agree on is "it depends." This is the most realistic answer. It depends on what type of application you want to develop. It depends on what system you are using. It depends on your personal preferences. But, it is also a pretty useless answer for the new roboticist who is trying to decide which language to learn first. You're probably reading this article because you want to start programming robots and don't know which language to choose. My advice is not to ask which programming language is the "best". A better question to ask is: Which programming language should I start learning now? You will still get differing opinions, but a lot of roboticists can agree on the key languages. The most important thing for career roboticists is to develop "The Programming Mindset" rather than to be proficient in one specific language. In many ways, it doesn't really matter which programming language you learn first. Each language that you learn develops your proficiency with the programming mindset and makes it easier to learn any new language whenever it's required. In this case, learn whichever language makes the most sense for your next project. It's also worth pointing out that some widely popular languages are not common in robotics. For example, Javascript and PHP are used extensively in web development but hardly at all in robotics. Here are my top suggestions: C/C++, which are the top languages in robotics. Python Java C#/.NET Matlab Does this help and make sense? Let me know what follow up questions you have okay? I respond to everything, cheers!

@@JakeVoorhees i'll join the discord and talk more on there sometime. Sorry i'm a little busy. I have a test next week and a baby on the way this semester. I'm actually studying mechatronics at Curtin University In Australia. Its quite new but became one of the most popular courses quite quickly. I chose the degree because i wanted to get into automation. I've had a chat with the person that interviews graduate engineers for grad positions at a company i want to work at. From that i've decided i'm going to try aim myself towards process controls. Perhaps doing a masters in subsea engineering (offshort mining is huge in my state). This is of course all up in the air till i actually get a few years in the industry. If you are looking for video ideas i've also never seen video about my situation. I'm a mature aged student, i didn't take math or physics in highschool and decided to change my career when i was 23. I've met heaps of people in similar positions, but most videos are aimed at the highschool student entering university. Its led to a few surprising differences though. For example the interviewer i spoke to said for mature ages grads who have worked in the past joining university clubs is almost unrequired. they don't expect adults with mortgages, families and work commitments to commit to that. Your previous work experience makes up for it. concentrate instead of networking with industry (As you are closer in age to young working engineers) and building a portfolio of personal projects.

Hey thanks for the comment. Great plan. Here's the thing with a BS in mechatronics. You can't really get one. There are actually just 3 ABET programs in the USA right now. So oftentimes you have to choose EE or ME or CPE and do a degree concentration in mechatronics, which is a great path. Some universities have a formal certification program within EE/ME/CPE, or you may have to build it yourself. You would do that by for example, majoring in EE and taking more electronics courses and less about power or telecommunications. You would take robotics electives, signals and controls, and circuits courses, etc. Your CS related courses should revolve around mechatronics rather than something else, and so on. Computer Engineering is often a subset of Electrical Engineering. But sometimes engineers struggle to choose between ME vs EE. @@jrmx2s.787 hey thanks for the extra comment. I think EE is best for robotics because you can do electronics or computer engineering focus, signals and controls, instrumentation, machine learning and anything CS related, circuits, telecomm, etc. As for automotive, many MEs want to do this as it’s technically a part of mechanical engineering - vehicle engineering. Many automotive engineers work with and design, test, analyze and redesign the physical components in the automotive industry. If you like coding and electronics, do EE. If you are 100% into physical parts design, so ME. You can work almost the same career in the same sectors but one career vs the other will result in a different type of role for you. If you are on the fence, EE is better to me. More options. Cooler potential. More money. More coding pathways. EE is the best engineering today. Does that help? But the thing is it focuses on a lot of fields and its not easy for a student to cope up with everything I just wanted to get over with it I'm proud that I finished it dont get me wrong I am satisfied now but the journey is not easy. Most people fail often in the subjects and some even drop out because its too difficult. I'd suggest you must think this through or u can always do masters in Mechatronics after getting a undergrad degree in a core subject like Electronics and electrical, mechanical, or computer science.

As an "pure" ME you might become a professional for brakes. Then brakes you do. I feel in such fields as mechatronics you always find a new challenge. As its a relatively new field and highly interdisciplinary it evolves at a rapid pace. I dont think it will get boring soon and that keeps me motivated.

Heyyy thanks for the follow up. Edge computing is a distributed, open IT architecture that features decentralized processing power, enabling mobile computing and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. In edge computing, data is processed by the device itself or by a local computer or server, rather than being transmitted to a data center. Of course languages like Java, Python, and C are good for IOT, but also Go and LUA are used a lot. I hope this helps. Ask any follow up questions that you have okay? Cheers thank you!

Hey thanks for the question and don’t worry. This is a regular type of dilemma. Because there aren’t a ton of mechatronics degrees available yet, that’s not always an option. And because there are only about 19,000 BME jobs compared to over 300,000 for civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering, I rarely suggest that major unless you are 100% sure you want to do that for a career. You can go into nearly any field with a mechanical engineering degree, and an electrical or electronics degree I think is even more powerful than ME nowadays. You can work in robotics. You can work in mechatronics. You can do BME, etc

Yeah thanks for the comment. Mechatronics is a great path but you are right. It is still a weird time. I get a lot of questions about mechatronics engineering - probably more than any other subset of engineering nowadays. I think mechatronics is the future. It is the intersection of mechanical and electrical engineering, so you can lean into either the physical design side i.e. mechanics, or the electrical engineering aspects which would include the circuitry, signals and controls, power, automation, and programming aspects. I think a mechatronics engineer who leans into the electrical engineering side of things is VERY well suited for the future. There are only 28 ABET mechatronics programs in the world and just 3 in the USA, so oftentimes people like your students will have to choose EE or ME or CPE and do a degree concentration in mechatronics, which is awesome. @@365dailyroutine yuppp, if you’re interested in mechatronics, here is another pro tip. You basically have to major in something else because there are only 3 ABET accredited programs in the USA. Some universities have a formal certification program within EE/ME/CPE, or you may have to build it yourself. It depends, i mean you can do either. But robotics is technically a part of mechatronics, so the best answer is that. Some CS people can end up working with robots, but just on the programming alone. It’s more rare to find a mechatronics major so really it is a subset within mechanical or electronics engineering. It’s pretty much a degree for grad school :)

Is it a good idea to study a bachelor's degree for both mechanical and mechatronics? And the master in mechatronics later on. Since some of the modules are same in the bachelor courses. I am in my third year mechanical engineering and I have been given a scholarship to study mechatronics. With some of the modules I did being transferable can I study both, because I am almost done with mechanical, in which I only have two semesters (1 year) left. I initially planned to study mechanical and get a masters in mechatronics

What are the best universities for study about machetronic engineering in USA
@JakeVoorhees

Hey thanks for another comment. There are actually only 28 programs for mechatronics in the USA. So chances are, your path into MTREs is not necessarily including majoring in it. Often engineers will major in EE or ME and do their concentration on mechatronics, and bridge between the two. Here are some videos that you may be interested in: “What Do Mechatronics Engineers Do?” kzbin.info/www/bejne/aorNfY2Zhrd_mtU There are only 28 mechatronics programs in the country, so often times you have to choose EE or ME and do a degree concentration in mechatronics, which is fine. Automotive engineering is a subset of Mechanical Engineering, and you cannot really major in automotive engineering anyways. You can choose it as a concentration within ME though, so the advice you are getting from people is fine. Software engineering is a tiny part of CS, and if you don't like EE but like software engineering, I encourage you to keep learning about EE in order to understand how much programming EE requires. Lots of EEs end up working as CS people or software engineers. Here if you watch these videos, you will have an advantage in making some decisions :) “Jobs for Mechanical Engineers” kzbin.info/www/bejne/gmqYomCaa6uKjLs which talks about automotive engineers which is one of the most popular interests within ME. “Mechanical VS Electrical Engineering” kzbin.info/www/bejne/bIGtXoytataJqcU “What Do Mechatronics Engineers Do?” kzbin.info/www/bejne/aorNfY2Zhrd_mtU this one will be good too. It depends, i mean you can do either. But robotics is technically a part of mechatronics, so the best answer is that. Some CS people can end up working with robots, but just on the programming alone. If you want to do more things like the controls or instrumentation or the design or the circuitry, you will not be able to because you are just a computer scientists. Mechatronics Engineers can be programmers, but programmers are not engineers. Does that make sense?

What's FE and PE ?
@JakeVoorhees
@JakeVoorhees 4 жыл бұрын
I guess I should make a video about this :) There are a variety of schools for engineering, but only some are ABET accredited. This type of school is required to be eligible to become an actually Engineer in Training (EIT) and eventually a full Professional Engineer (PE). In order to gain these certifications, you must sit for a series of two 8 hour engineering exams. The first of which is the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam, or the FE. Students in engineering at ABET universities can sit for the FE at the end of their courses, usually during senior year is when you would first take it. The FE tests you on generally engineering (4 hours in the morning), and then based on your major, you will have questions on mechanical/civil/electrical etc. After this, you become an EIT. Then you go out and get your first full time engineering job, typically as a "Staff Engineer". Even though you are a working professional, you are not a professional engineer yet. This requires 4 full years of engineering experience while working under someone with the Professional Engineer (PE) certification. Once you have that, there is a bunch of paperwork and validation of your experience. Then you can sit for the Professional Engineering Exam, the PE. This is another 8 hours where depending on your discipline, you would take a general mechanical in the morning, and then a specified mechanical (HVAC, Machine Design, Thermal & Fluids) or say if you're a civil engineer, there is Transportation, Structures, Geotechnical, Construction, Water Resources, etc. The PE is very hard and pass rates for some types are just 50%. Engineers usually study for an entire year, and its totally open book. People bring in a red wagon full of text books sometimes. So after you take the FE, work for 4 years, then study really hard and pass the PE for your field, you are a full engineer. I hope this helps! Thanks
