I got a 1 lb pack of Pahto on sale from YVH during a Black Friday sale for maybe $8. It is potent at 18% aa! I have used it a few times as a bittering hop in Belgian styles and I am not 100% how I like it. I get a bit of an herbal note and the bitterness seems a bit sharp. At maybe 1/2 oz per batch, I am debating if it is worth working through these hops, or just composting them and using Warrior or CTZ. It is odd that you never hear talk of Pahto, but it is in the top 10 grown US hops. I assume one or more of the big guys must use it for bittering.

I’ve done some smash pale ales with bittering hops like comet and most recently Columbus. I think it’s just a recommendation and there’s no such thing a strictly a bittering hop

Totally agree. In today's marketing world when I see bittering hop as the description I feel like what they are really saying is: "We bred some hops together and didn't get anything fruity so just use the alpha to bitter your beer. We're sorry." Cheers! -Mike

I use this. Its good when you look for that resiny mouthfeel especialy when brewing something like session neipa

People want resin in an NEIPA? To each their own I guess and that's why we all homebrew. Cheers! -Mike

Sounds like a good bittering hop to go with a fruity yeast like Voss. Cheers for the info lads.

Yeah. Sometimes its hard to envision if a hop (or malt) is falling short in an experiment like this because the right yeast strain or complementary ingredient might really make this one sing. Cheers! -Mike

Yeah, mixing piney, resiny hops with fruity hops just tastes weird. Gotta be more careful with hop selection nowadays days

One to avoid then. There's already too many white pith beers out there imo.
