During our visit to Luxembourg, we just scratched the surface when it comes to food. We passed up on some of the more flashy and popular foods to eat in the area, and tried to find some foods that are more traditional to the area. Were we expecting to eat a cold potato pancake, meat salad, and a donut?.... Definitely not! But the experience still memorable and fun to try some quick bites while we explored one of the world's most wealthy countries.

‘Judd mat Gaardebounen’ would’ve been *perfect* in this cold, rainy weather. It’s a savory dish of smoked pork collar and broad beans with some sort of gravy (& potatoes sometimes). Usually served with a Luxembourgish white wine or beer. Very comforting :) Great video :D

The carnival in Luxembourg, the Fuesent, naturally includes Verwurrelter. The name of the dough knots sprinkled with icing sugar derives from the thoughts supposedly confused by the carnival. In Germany they are called Krapfen or Berliner and are usually filled with jam. Willa is such a cute girl and she is always smiling!

the two Verwuefelter are the same only size differce. The smaller one was tougher because it was already an old one. There are some more tippical luxembourgish what you missed, but it isn't easy to find in Luxembourg city. What you also can eat is Judd mat Gardenbohnen, Kniddeln, Päerdsbiefstëck (horse), moules in Riesling, Träiben and Kuddelfleck

Guys, you do very well. Beside exploring all attractions of course tasting the local common food or specialties is part of travelling. Glad you all are open to try and go for such a challenge(sometimes). Potatoe salad is very well known here in Germany as well and all areas they have their own favourite recipe(with mayonaise or not, with vinegar, cucumbers, boiled egg and so on). I and know lot people who like and can dive into the Kartoffelpfannkuchen. My favourite is to put them fresh out of the pan on a Küchentuch first to get rid of the oil(as they have to swim in oil in the pan) and than put them straight on a fresh, a realy fresh bread and cold apple smash on top. Hmmmh, you are right. Guess now found what I will have for lunch on coming friday. Thx

I'm from Saarland which is right next to Luxemburg. I would say we feel pretty close to the Luxembourgers but I actually don't know if it is the same the other way around. Lots of people from Belgium, France and Germany are working over there, because the salaries are much higher. Luxembourg is also known for the 'Tanktourismus'. People would drive over to Luxemburg tank up their car and take a stroll along the Mosel river. Also we would drive over to visit cultural festivities, e.g. concerts or the Shueberfoeur. Actually some things are much more affortable in Luxemburg, like gas, coffe, cigarettes and concerts. But I also would say our dialect is pretty close to Luxembourgian. So when speaking 'Saarländisch' I also say 'Grumbeerkichelcher' to 'Kartoffelpuffer'. We have them typically at a fair with applesauce or eat them at home. I always thought 'Kartoffelpuffer' are a typicial german dish? As it seems like you haven't eaten them before I wonder if I always was wrong? But still. Luxembourg is a really interesting place. Also for academic reasons it's a really popular place to research commuting flows, migration flows and multiculturalism.

Delicious, the meat potato salad is a complete meal. This "Verwuerelter", "messed up", we call those "little cripples" (Krüppelcher, kleiner Krüppel) because they're always so messed up. A kind of "Berliner" donuts. Not always filled.

Hahaha welcome in a very special dialect zone. If you go creative it's not that much of a hard thing to translate... Feiersténg translates to Feuerstein (= firestone) and it's a "salad" generally made of cooked meat, onions, a vinaigrette (oil, vinegar, mustard), herbs (persil & tarragon) and capers. Sometimes potatoes and green peas are added too. So it's not a potato salad with meat, but a meat salad with potatoes. Meat salads are quite common, for germans salad isn't naturally greens. Think of Fleischsalat (belony style sausage), Wurstsalat, Teufelssalat (beef), etc.

Feierstengszalot = spoken in dialect for "Feuerstangensalat"..Luxembourgians are speaking a german dialect. "Feuerstangensalat" is a kind of "Wurstsalat"/literally "sausage salad" because in German there is a difference between "Wurstsalat" or "Fleischsalat/meat salad"...just saying...and Feuerstangen/literally "Fire-sticks" are a sort of spicy Salami sausage "Grompere" = spoken in dialect for "Grundbirne" literally "ground pear" which is an alternative term for "Erdapfel" = literally "soil apple" which is the french term "pomme de terre" translated into German = both "Grundbirne/Erdapfel" are alternative dialect terms for "Kartoffel"/potato "Kichelcher" = spoken in dialect für "Küchelchen" literally "little cake" = "Kuchen/cake + diminutiv ending "chen" in order to express something is little or cute" therefore "Gromperekichelcher" = "Grundbirnenküchelchen" and means literally "little potato cake" "Verwurelter" = decribes literally "something/someone is twistet (used in behalf of humans it means "Mad person/Lunetic person"/but here it refers to the specific "twisted form" of that specific Carneval sweet baked good..and Carneval is considered as "the Lunetic time" so the term fits in every aspect...it derives from the dialect word "wurlen or wureln/2 forms depending on the region" meaning depending on the context either "twistet" or describes "very busy movement" as like as what you see when looking at ants on an anthill for instance or looking at bees in a bee-hive or looking at people in a fully packed busy street....or when you feel "butterflies in your tummy" then it can be also described alternatively as "wurlen/wureln im Bauch" although we also have the saying "Schmetterlinge im Bauch" which is the literal same saying as like as it is in English as well.

Not a lot annoys me about Americans, but one thing that does is their pronunciation of *herbs* . It's not 'erbs! It's Herbs with an h. 300 million Americans grow up saying 'erbs, and it is SO painful to hear, trust me.

@@OurStorytoTell Yeah, I just don't know how Americans originally got the idea to pronounce 'erbs like that. Google suggests they got it from listening to Norman French. We say hotel with an h, not 'otel. There are probably many other examples. Since I'm in grammar mode right now, I'd just like to point out that too many people across the pond say "between you and I" instead of "between you and me". It's even commonly heard in American movies, on TV, and sometimes in KZbin videos. This is where learning German helps to understand one's own native tongue properly. The cases (nominative, accusative, genitive and dative) are so useful in this regard.
