Previous years up to 2021 we hired contractors from MO or TX and they would come out to sort, grade and bundle the ties to sell by the truck load, now days a different contractor comes out and load the scrap ties directly into gondolas and retired coal cars to be shipped to a facility somewhere in the midwest to be ground up and burn in a power plant, as for the scrap rails I was on a scrap rail recovery crew and we'd load up 1200' - 1700' sticks on the train and a full train gets sent to the Laurel, MT or Pueblo, CO plant and we did that until the company decided to abolish us and hired contractors to cut up and scrap the rails but the BNSF gets a percentage from the scrap rails.

Back years ago, an art foundry student asked the railroad crew if they could have some of the three or four 6' or so pieces of rail next to one of the university buildings. It was one of those where the rail boss said if I don't see them tomorrow, I don't know where they went. Well, they got loaded up by some foundry students, and most got cut into sections to make anvils. The most enterprising student took a piece, modified a famous song, and I guess he took it when he left the university. The song went "Ridden on by the City of New Orleans" as the rail line was the one that the City of New Orleans runs on every day down through Illinois

Thanks for the video! Recycling is a way to transition from profligacy to parsimony. The ties are organic plant matter saturated with creosote and/or other fungicides and pesticides: they can meld into the soil over time with the additives decomposing. The energy and expense invested in extracting metal from ore remains in the rails even if they are melted for repurposing.

Dumpsters with ties are considered hazmat so they must go to a specific site which is EXPENSIVE..one approved disposal is alternate fuel for cement kilns. Usually only the worst ties which are falling apart. Now rail is one of the highest grades of scrap steel. I was shocked at what I got from a trailer of scrap fencing wire..several hundred dollars. Was just cleaning up one weekend and really cleaned up.

Cool video as usual Dave. Watching that truck drive out with the scrap rail reminded me of the days as a locomotive crane helper. That crane had a rectangular electro magnet that we loaded the rail on trucks with. Three at a time off of a rail bed. That was an American Locomotive Co. Diesel Electric. crane. Those days are gone. And the ties yes. I still have a few i got back in the 80s from the Steelton and Highspire R.R. Used sleepers make good fence posts because they are already heavily treated. There must be farmers who would like to have a stack of them on hand for replacements and new fence lines. Short lengths of rails are popular with people in NZ and the Pacific Islands who like to cook their food in ground ovens as they hold heat for a long time.

NJ Transit use to sell their used ties to a power generating facility which ground them up and burned them to generate electricity. The rail was cut into pieces and sold to a scrap dealer. Kowalchak purchased all the scrap and we loaded it onto his trucks at Port Morris. There is a truck and rail scale to weigh either rail cars or trucks. Kowalchak didn't have an electromagnetic crane so we hooked up the magnet to the crane that I piloted and loaded the trucks for him. The operator and I never had to bring lunch and received a nice Christmas bonus$$! Because of the creosote in the ties landscapers wouldn't purchase them for landscape purposes😎🚆✝

Hi Dave! Fabulous news about the selling of the old ties and recycling of the old rails! Fact is, if I was still in the area, I'd want to get some ties for use at my cabin, but my cousin is running things there now and it would be up to him. Hope all is well with you, my friend! Love your videos!

Bed frames of old were frequently rerolled from railroad rail (which is why drilling them is a hassle). Rebar and other "reroll" (search the term "reroll steel products") items are made from the vast amounts of scrap rail generated every year.
@ccrx670011 ай бұрын
Rail steel is good stuff for sure CommOut and there are like you say a good many things made out of old rail. A good bit of old rail is also melted down to make new rail and scrap rail usually brings a higher price than regular steel at many scrap yards. Appreciate your taking the time to write in and check out the what we do with our old rail video my friend.

Around here, (Wisconsin) it is illegal for landscapers to use old railroad ties, account the creosote leaching into the ground. Most “railroad ties” landscapers use around here are new green preasure treated 6x6 or 6x8 timbers.

Ever since your video on safety rails such as we see between the tracks on bridges, I was wondering if those scrap rails could be used for that purpose?
@ccrx6700 Жыл бұрын
Yes they could be Rod, I honestly don't know why they are not put on all the bridges, old thinking who said they weren't needed, from an old track boss, I totally disagree, but I am in the minority on that. Oh well it is what it is. Glad you could find the time to drop by and check out tonight's video my friend.

Dave, can you turn the ties upside down and reuse them? Please excuse me for these questions but this is how I learn what I don't know.
@ccrx67006 ай бұрын
No problem on the questions Frank. We have never turned the ties over, they are usually pretty worn on the bottom from the ballast digging into them, which would mean the tie plate wouldn't always fit flat against the tie. Plus if you drove a spike in the hole would go straight thru from the spike hole being once on top. Holes in the bottom of the tie can then attract critters into them. Plus driving spikes in once the bottom of the tie which is now on top would further weaken the wood. Driving too many spikes in a tie is not desireable and we call that spike killing a tie. Most ties when we take them out are at the end of their usable life. Thanks so much for checking out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.

Chicago Heights steel takes old rail and make fence posts out of them. And what they can’t use they sell to foundries to get melted. Ties we grind up.

I've often wondered if there might be some benefit to stacking some log-sized chunks of old rail in a fireplace (gas or wood.) Seems like they'd soak up a lot of heat that might otherwise be lost and radiate it out for a while after the fire dies down. I guess you'd call it "thermal ballast." Maybe stack it up the sides and back of the fireplace.

Yes it certainly could be used for that abobymous. A good bit of our decent rail is sold to RR contractors to put in sidings or spur tracks or yards also. Thank you very much for taking the time to visit with us and may you have a very good day my friend.

*_Thats a lot of weight on that truck. its rear tires are nearly flat. Its good you have smart owners there at the mine. It seems they really care about the business and the employees. Maybe when the mine finally closes for good they can turn it into a museum and have rail rides and fun things to do on the rail lines._* 🤣🤣🤣

Curious if you know how much a stick of rail would be worth when sold to the scrappers/recyclers? That was some weight on the truck going out!
@ccrx67009 ай бұрын
Different yards around the country give different prices for scrap rail, some yards give a premium price for RR materials too. So whatever the scrap prices are in your area is a pretty good idea of what the price would be. Scrap prices go up and down all the time around here. Thanks so much for visiting with us and checking out the video. May you have a very good day my friend.

they used to be repurposed for use as landscape timbers... but that was years ago... with "todays" hardline emphasis on not polluting the ground (railroad ties have nasty stuff impregnated into them), i doubt if they are welcome as landscape timbers anymore

There is a company here who use old ties to make interior decoration in houses. like beams holding up a ceiling and mantle piece as the old buildings had in 1700's I wonder if they soak the preserver out somehow. They will also make good fence posts and better to see them re used than put in landfill like the last company did. Soon you will be running coal at 60mph with all the good track LOL.

46k lb of old rail, while not a maxed out load for that semi it's still nothing to sneeze at. Hopefully he's got good brakes. I was wondering how you guys handled getting rid of your unusable rail and ties, while no longer good for railroad service much of the steel in those rails will recycle very nicely for use in more new products including rail. Any monies from sale of the steel and ties goes back into deferring MOW costs if your company works like I think it does. Every little bit helps.

Every tie they take is one less you have to pay to landfill. Even if you sold them for a penny each it would be cheaper than the cost to landfill them. As to the rail you could start an online store and sell souvenir rail pieces. The rail can be milled down into nice anvils.
