That happened at my mom's work. A senior retired, and then they hired a new woman who took over everything, had poor work ethic, and didn't get along with anybody down the chain. Toxic for work. Many people down the chain ended up quitting, my mom was the first and it was a very very tough decision after 20 years of loyal work.

Basically do everything you can to help a person understand where they have to improve on or actively help them improve before you fire them. This justifies your decision and prevents them from holding back the team.

Life is often like mountain climbing but rarely is everything so clear and apparent. In mountaineering you must be prepared to cut the rope and fall to prevent everyone from being pulled over a cliff. Its a situational event that good planning and training and experience can not necessarily avoid because “things happen”... if you would cut the rope on yourself but hesitate before cutting the rope on someone else... your the kind of person everyone wants on the team. Recognizing mistakes before they happen keeps things in the realm of correctable errors. The nurturing maternal instincts are healthy and if applied properly for instance in climbing... link up and snap in a short rope with a couple of cams, nuts even a piton at each end. Only 6’ to 8’ of rope. This is your last line of emergency defense. It gets wrapped in a cloth with velcro closure so it opens immediately and falls out with large scale and small scale ends... so if there is something to anchor to... in less than 30 seconds your tied in place and if both sides are anchored solid you are now a anchor point for your whole party. Thats who you want to be... here is the trick to saving yourself and possibly saving us all. Here’s the little extra weight i am going to carry so that the team can leave me in place because I have options and will climb out alone. The beauty of the military is that team protects its own... which protects the team. There is no I in team. I regret not marketing my spider bag climbing kits. I got hurt and no longer climb. I can boulder but no longer belong on the mountain face. I still enjoy the mountains. When you can get through to people everyone makes it home safely. When you can’t get through... “stuff” happens. You must remain aware of who you are allowing to connect on your lifeline. Don’t get caught in a storm on the hard side of a mountaineering decision. Perspective makes job firing easily assessed and determined. Its only a set back not a hard line forced decision. You might both be thankful and still enjoy the summit together.

In my experience in sales you can get away with almost anything with the employeer, if you are a good salesperson because most bosses only care about the numbers, I saw many people get sacked because they were crap at sales, and no one avoided the sack because they were a nice person, generally they are not good people a few were but that was rare, most are amoral scumbags who I wouldn't piss on if they were on fire

What do you when you can't fire someone? For example, in college or at university when you HAVE to work in a group to complete an assignment and the guy who takes charge REFUSES to listen to anything the other people say and the mentor of your study group won't "fire" the leader because he's convinced it's a great team exercise?

Well the mentor is right, because that's exactly how its gonna be in life too. You're gonna get real strong headed idiots leading things in the wrong direction. But the best thing you can do is just support that person in their failure 100%. Try to make it as good as you can. Then if that leader is a failure you can use that leverage against them the next time its suggested they lead. And hey at least in collage you know you're gonna get a new group at some point. In life when your boss is insufferable or makes bad moves you're stuck with them a lot longer unless you find a new job. I will say one thing though, and its that talent usually stands out. If you can do a job better than the person above you routinely then it usually won't be long before you have their job. Barring any other type of bias that keeps you from progressing. I.E. family owned businesses lol. Hope that helped some. Best of luck.

There are a couple choices here... First, with your example (in college) the mentor has a point. I'm not going to tell you that he's "right"... BUT college is about preparing you for "real adult life". In the real work force, regardless of where you go, there will be assholes you can't "get rid of"... Jocko even has at least one good video about "dealing with bad leaders", and it's my experience that he's right. It's about Building Relationships. Stop trying to sell an idea to someone who ain't buyin'. Start working on improving your relationship with him/her. AND this sounds "counter-intuitive" because it will go against your instincts, but put your ego in check for a time. TRY, just making this leader look good to others. Don't sweat that it's going a direction you don't like. Thank the powers that be YOU are NOT in charge of the dumpster fire... if it comes to that. Just take the "adult attitude" up and work on building trust, building a relationship, and building your own credibility with the person. Even that they haven't earned respect, show a little. BE RESPECTABLE, and respect will generally follow... It can also be the particular tactic employed in the "sales pitch" because giving ideas or help is very much about sales. You're not going to win fans by telling them "how stupid they are"... OR teach anyone "Because I know this and you don't"... You CAN however, sell the idea, and if it's done cleverly, the egotist who "never listens" will arrive at the idea on his or her own (or they think so)... Let them "take credit"... If the team succeeds, it's because a leader has led them. If the team fails, it's also because the leader failed them... SO There's that "leverage" for future use, but in the college scenario, it costs a grade-point hit... AND that's the other choice. Consequences... You ALWAYS have a choice. You don't have to show up for work, but you don't have to get paid for work you never did either... Just be aware of the consequences. (that doesn't mean you don't accept them)... If you can't fire someone that you're never in hell going to "get through to"... Quit. For a boss, this is the rough equivalent to being fired. In most upper-professional "white collar" atmospheres, this can also entail a "formal grievance". You file it with Human Resources and politely explain that the "unprofessional lack of respect is the foremost reason this place is no longer in any way a respectable place to work." AND then leave... I might advise you (highly) to seek some progress toward a replacement job before you make such a drastic move, but at the end of the bitching, whining, and crying... A toxic job place is just as destructive to you as no job at all... Even dropping the pay-grade(s) and finding work where you're appreciated and respected is better than all the money you never get to spend and enjoy for the hell you go through to get any of it... Sometimes, we're better off learning to be happy with what we CAN do... and have. ;o)

Your own boss tries to undermine everything you accomplished because now you have made them look bad? How would it effect you, if you would fire your spouse? (Pros and cons). Don't know the case ( you couldn't get through her once or if it happens often). You could also try to understand her point of view, if you haven't done it already: what she wants and why? Then respond. Perhaps, brainstorm and see possibilities in the situation that are good for both of you. Again...I am just guessing as I don't know the situation.

idle minds is the devils playground. Free time is for sleeping or maybe an hour before sleeping. Too many people have rejected life bc someone lied to them and said they can work smart and not hard. You EARN free time. Retirement is FREE TIME. Paid holidays are free time. Sick days are free time. You spending 20 mins in the bathroom is FREE TIME. Grow up and at least sound like a grown up.

I was not a SEAL, but I was a Marine. You keep your discipline through your habits. Also remind yourself WHY you're doing what you're doing. Little things add up to big things. I get up pretty early for the gym and have a long commute. So the night before, I lay out my clothes for work and pack my lunches. Everything is ready to go in the morning. Saves me time. So staying disciplined and forming good habits will CREATE free time for you. If you're pressed for time, then have a plan about how you want to attack the day. Going upstairs? Take your dirty clothes with you. Going downstairs? Take the bathroom trash with you on garbage day to load it all up. Why am I lifting weights? To stay healthy for my family. Got kids and have to be somewhere the next morning? Pre-make their food and pick out their outfits the night before. If you have multiple kids, have 'em sleep in their clothes over night. The underlying theme with all of this is to be MINDFUL about what you're doing. People wander around looking at their cell phones, wasting 5 minutes here, 5 minutes there. The average person checks their phone around 50 times a day. 50. That's where your free time went. So be mindful and put the phone down.

Do your job then help them with theirs. Encourage them every time you see them put a even a little extra effort in, even if it's still not enough. It might not pay off immediately, but think of it as a practice run for when you are in a leadership position. Patience and positivity don't go unnoticed, even when it seems like it does.

The worst part is Hes a friend from highschool. At a time we were even in our positions but I've excelled and moved up. Love is a very subjective term that can take many different forms and contexts. I am pretty sure he didn't mean that he is going to wine, dine and bed every employee he hires. I am pretty sure that he used the term to describe a sense of fellowship. Soldiers like Jocko could arguably have that kind of love for each other. That kind of may love might be required to run into dangerous situations to save one of your men. I agree that Louis could have worded his comment better, but maybe you should take a deep breath and try to be more open minded? I don't know... just a thought...

I agree with Louis. Firing a person should not be taken lightly. Having compassion and humility are important qualities for leaders. Firing a person could ruin their lives, cause them to be homeless, commit suicide etc. But at some point, if the person has been given several chances and been offered help, trained more etc and they just can't do the job, they may need to be let go. But they can be let go kindly and be offered a positive reference. It's never easy. Btw this is off topic, but my son is a Marine...OOH Rah Semper Fi!!!! :) :)

C Lewis I’m not disparaging his rank, but leadership definitely is different and more demanding at higher levels. Managing at a lower level can be done successfully with less expertise and skill imho. What he is saying is good basics so I should probably not have commented at all. Was the tequila prolly.

Your comment was relevant, direct and brought up a good point. In his position he managed teams of a certain size, and was able to build relationships with them to a certain degree. With that understanding, we can use his advice accordingly.
