I didn't realize how interesting rocks were until I started looking at some really cool ones in the Internet. Then I realized that I have some really interesting rocks right near me here in Michigan. I've been having fun with them ever since!

I bought a 2 pound National Geographic tumbler a few years ago ands it’s just been collecting dust, I ran across your videos the other day and fired it up again. It’s rolling as we speak. i just got into rocks a couple of weeks ago because i bought some semi precious stones from a craft store and wire wrapped them for jewelry but i thought it would be way cooler to just source my own rocks and stones to wrap! im in chicago though so ive been trying to do some research on what spots outside of the city i should visit to hound for rocks because im sure i wont find anything in the city. i appreciate all the knowledge ive been collecting from this channel, from tumbling to hunting this channel is very informative!

My suggestion is a Lortone rotary tumbler (the biggest you can afford) and a Lot-O vibratory tumbler.

I found your channel while looking for tutorials on rock tumbling. I enjoy your detail both in the finding and finishing. And now what to do with finished rocks. I inherited a tumler tumbler from my younger brother and my dad 35 years ago. My son was 9 then. But we never got started then. Recently I was helping my younger brother at the sale of his mom’s estate and a lady showed him a “tupper ware” bowl and asked if the rocks were included for 1$ marked on the lid. My brother looked at the rocks and at me and said he and Dad had tumbled them many years ago. He said he would not be able to get them back across the country did I want them. Our father was a geologist and really loved rocks, the natural world, and camping. (Reminds me why I like your channel). I accepted the rocks gratefully. When I showed them to my son and my grandchildren it was my 10 year old granddaughter that enjoyed them most. I told you all this to tell you the use we found for some of the polished rocks, the ones smaller than a dime, the girl likes to play mancala. It is usually played with 48 small glass beads. My granddaughter and I were able find 5 sets of 48 stones each in that bowl the right size to play mancala with. So if you have 48 small polished rocks make or buy a mancala board. Touching my Dads polished rocks never fails to bring a smile to my face even when one of the grandchildren just beat me at mancala. Thank you for your art. Once a good teacher always a good teacher.

It's funny that you mentioned mancala. I'm a recently retired teacher. Another teacher once asked me if I'd make some mancala stones for her. She was doing some sort of project where she needed some mancala games. I agreed to, but she told me to wait and never did ask me to make them. My wife and I have been playing backgammon almost every day for about a year. I have thought about making backgammon checkers for us, but haven't gotten around to doing that project quite yet. Enjoy your games with your grandchildren. We love games here too.

I wish I could give you that stove. It was the stove that came with our first house. We replaced it with a newer one, but I kept that to brew beer on. I stopped brewing years ago, but my wife won't let me get rid of it because she uses it about twice a year when we have a big dinner here. I just think of tools or cabinets that I could put in that spot.

We have two kids, one married and one in college. When they were home we managed to keep the house pretty clean then too. I have to admit that my clean shop is a lie. It's not horribly messy, but I did spend about an hour cleaning before the video.

Yes!! You remind me of my two oldest brothers they are both very organized and neat and everything has its place. One of my brothers is a lover of working with wood and the other one loves working with Harley, Davison‘s and every tool has its place. I am 56 and have a craft room but have gotten sick with MS and fibromyalgia and had to sell everything but I’m sticking with my rock tumbling because that’s something I can still do. I enjoy watching the way you store and keep your rocks. I am very much a beginner I started in December 2022 when I came across boxes and boxes of fossils and rocks in my mom’s attic! Since then I’ve been hooked, but it’s taking me a long time to learn the different rocks and minerals that make up the rocks. I’ll keep watching your channel and hopefully I’ll keep growing in wisdom. I did take pictures of cleaned up wet rocks. They’re all like 8“ x 60” Etc. I also have smaller rocks but I was wondering if you knew where I could send pictures of my larger rocks to find out what they are. I appreciate any help or direction you can give me God bless and take care. I have loved rocks since I was a kid living by Lake Michigan. Came across your video by accident. Loved your collection. I will have to watch what you do. We used to always look for pretty "stones or pebbles" as we called them while playing in the lake where they were already all smooth by nature. I believe we spent more time looking for them than playing in the water! Wish I had them now as I grew-up appreciating them more and more. I have been to Lake Superior also but was afraid to keep any of them as nowadays, I didn't think you could take anything from the State Parks? Do you know the true answer to that? It was just at a little hotel on the shores of Superior where guests were burning driftwood! I was in horror seeing this as I am sure you know how much a small branch costs in the stores! The people from the hotel told me so much washes ashore and that I could take what I wanted, but I didn't as I thought with my luck I would get caught in another state that didn't allow it to be taken! TFS!

Hi Rob, that was an awesome rock tour. I enjoy your videos so much and have learned a lot from you. I’ve only been polishing rocks for a month but we have always enjoyed going to the Lake Michigan beaches for the last 35 years or so and picking up pretty stones and rocks. We’ve got this big pretty pinkish rock sitting on the floor in our living room under one of the end tables. My wife has some crystal vases filled with stones in various rooms in the house and we have used the bigger ones for landscaping around the flower beds and pool. And now I’m building my polished rock collection. It’s a great hobby for the winter. Dave

A lot of rocks take me months to tumble. The tiger eye was surprisingly quick. It's not exactly soft, but it shaped up way quicker than agate and jasper.

Michigan Rocks I have only been in one part of the store/warehouse, but all the rocks are in separate bins and you just go in the rock room by yourself and pick through the bins. You can pick and choose which ones you want. I’m sure they must have a pretty healthy back up supply in the warehouses.

Your home is absolutely beautiful! I love it and the rustic Michigan appeal. Those two larger Petoskey stones in your tv cabinet are the size of that one I told you an old boyfriend found in a gravel driveway and polished for me 🤗 And a tray of polished rocks you did on the coffee table, great way to display them. I love it!

I remember loving rocks since I was about 5 yrs. old or younger. I use to go outside and sit on the curb and collect the rocks that had been scattered to the curb due to traffic. I would love to look at them. Quarts was my favorite. I loved the ones that looked like gold too. I've never lost my love for rocks. I never got into collecting them and never knew about tumbling them. Thanks for the video.

I have several fish tanks that I decorated with tumbled rocks and certain lights that highlight the colors. Slabs make for great habitats for specific fish. I wish I had gotten into the hobby in my youth as I lived in several countries growing up. Funny how I'm always eyeballing rocks when I'm out and about regardless of where I am. Here on Whidbey Island north of Seattle there's a rock painting club whose members get together and paint things on rocks and leaves them on the local trails for kids to find. It includes some serious artist. Every one of your polished stones is a natural work of art. I'll bet finding one on a stump while hiking with the family, would make a kids day.

I just started getting into rock collecting, and I love your videos. Especially since you use MI rocks from Lake Superior. We live in IL, but go up to the U.P. Several times a year. I haven’t tumbled my rocks yet, but I would have a hard time parting with them. I envy your collection, Thank you for the tumbling and identification tutorials!

I grew up in the UP, in Brimley. Our house was just a few hundred yards from the Point Iroquois Lighthouse. Left in 1986 for the Navy. Bought a tumbler a few months ago. Sure wish I kept all the Lake Superior agates I found years ago!

I love agate hunting in that area. I don't find many, but I treasure the ones I do find. I can't bear to put them in the tumbler though. I put all the other Lake Superior rocks in the tumbler though. I have a batch finishing up soon.

This is the first I have seen tiger eye on one of your videos. I bought one about the size of those off the street in Cannes Australia in '04 that was not brown. Honestly can't remember if it was red or green. I put it in a "safe place". From there we went to Caranda where they mine opals. Wow. Thank you for sharing!

Some years ago I saw a wall display of polished rocks behind glass, the wall cabinet was fan shaped and the rocks were arranged in color order from dark to light, it was beautiful. I've also seen coffee tables that were display cabinets filled with polished stones.

I wonder how a hand made coffee table would look with rocks randomly placed on the top, then covered with a thick resin mix, or whatever is used. I think it might look nice. I have thought about making a table with a glass top and a shallow area under the top to put rocks. Then you could change the rocks in there or even put something completely different on display. My wife was not as excited about my idea. With epoxy, you can never get your rocks back or change the look of the table. I used epoxy on a desk I made for my son. I built a cedar log desk. The top was cedar boards, but cedar is too soft for a writing surface, so I used epoxy on top. It turned out great.

Funny we are recycling any clear plastic containers for our rocks to and trying to organize them. Looks great very clean and well organized wish I had a better set up but we are managing for newbie’s 😅😊

I find a lot and also buy a lot. It's fun to tumble stuff I find myself, but I also enjoy tumbling stuff that is from places that I'll never visit in person. Mexican crazy lace agate and Botswana agates are two rocks I really like that I'll never collect myself.

Nice set up. I like to fill tall thin glass vases with polished jelly bean quartz and smokey quartz and sit them beside a lamp.

Get some acrylic cylinders and you could make some nice displays with many of the rocks. Nice collection. Just picked up a tumbler and plan on starting soon. It's probably not as clean as it looks. I tidied up just before making this video. The tumblers don't produce dust. The saws and cab machine put off a fine mist that has rock dust in it. With one saw, I usually have to wipe up the floor around the saw when I'm done. Same goes for the counter around the other saw, the flat lap, and the cab machine. The dust doesn't seem to go really far.

Yes, I'm not proud of hiding them all away. I also don't want to over do it with them being displayed all over the house. Some day, I plan to do some craft shows and sell a lot off. I just don't have time for that right now.

You're right, I should sell some. The problem is that I don't have time to make videos, make some other things that I sell in a local shop, and also take the time to package things up and send them out. Maybe someday.

I remember when I was a kid when my family would stop at these rock shops, trading post, off rode museums, and etc..... When we took vacations and we could pick out your favorite colored tumbled rocks... They gave you a pouch about 6 inches deep 4 inches wide with a tie string at the open end... I think with a full pouch cost around 1 or 2 dollars back in the 60's....I still have some of those rocks today after 55 years ago.... I have 3 pouches each about 3 quarters full I covered each rock with toilet paper to protect the shine....

That's how I got into this. My son always wanted those little bags of rocks. Then he used $50 of birthday/Christmas money when he was 11 or 12 years old to buy a big Brazilian agate sliced in half and polished. That was when my wife and I decided to buy him a tumbler. We did it together for a couple years, then he outgrew it, but I haven't.
