The reason that the founders created an electoral college was for multiple reasons. One, If the president was elected by a popular votes he would only need to campaign in the places with the most people. States like Texas, California, and Florida would get all of the presidential candidate's attention while states like Alaska, Montana, and Wyoming would get no attention form the future president as they would have almost zero influence on the election. Two, If you think voter fraud or other countries trying to influence us is a problem now, it would be a whole lot worse if we went to a national popular vote. If it did, people would only have to interfere in the biggest states and cities and they could influence the outcome over the entire nation. With the electoral college, you don't know which states will to target (if you are trying to commit voter fraud, or if your Russia trying to get the outcome that you want). Three, Once a person is elected president they are still focusing on reelection even while they are governing. If they focus only on governing the big cities (the places where all the votes would be in a non-electoral college system) and implementing policies to help these areas the rural communities would be forgotten by the president since their (valid) concerns on how the country should be governed would be overlooked.
