First of all, the annual American presidential salary is currently $400,000, with a measly $50,000 annual expense allowance.
And let’s give it up for President Donald Trump. (clap hands) Like Presidents Herbert Hoover and John F. Kennedy before him, he donates his annual salary to various government agencies, like the National Park Service and Department of Veteran Affairs.
However, Trump is a billionaire. The country’s first billionaire President, as a matter of fact, so he can easily afford to donate his salary. Plus, the idea that he is “working for nothing” is incredibly misleading, since President Trump continues to make money from all the real estate he owns or manages. He has actually faced multiple lawsuits for this. Those suing him argue that by making money through his real estate ventures while in office, he has violated the U.S. Constitution’s emoluments clauses.
But anyway, yeah Donald Trump is the richest President in history, but looking into this got me curious, so let’s just see how rich every President was in American history, from the poorest to the richest.
Now that said, we are going to look at peak wealth for the sake of this video. There were several Presidents who had debts when they died so they literally had a negative net worth.

John Adams was not wealthy, he made this money through hard work and his father sold property to send him to Harvard, something his father never did. Also Abigail was extremely frugal during their marriage. John Q. Adams was like his father and when he and Louisa married, her father went bankrupt, fled to US. John came back from their honeymoon to Lousia's family estate and they were pounced upon by creditors. JQA had to use their money to bail out his father in law and Louisa"s dowry 'check' bounced. The Colonies changed the standard British common law that says a child inherits from the father to Partus Sequitur Ventrem which meant a child took the status of its mother. They were born into slavery. The point was to allow a slave owner to avoid providing for his own children and allow him to sell them as property. There were around 700,000 slaves in the USA in 1790 and that increased to around 4million by 1860. Thomas Jefferson wrote about the evils of slavery but in his actions he supported it. Slavery was never about stability, it was always and only about money. The founding fathers provided for slavery, they approved Section 2 Article IV which prohibited states freeing run away slaves and they approved the three-fifths compromise. Most people didn't own slaves, but enough of the important people did and they made sure the rules were written for themselves.

It probably helps that unlike executive or legislative branch serving as chief justice doesn't depend on you getting elected or (in the case of the presidential cabinet) having connections to someone elected into and staying in office when it comes to Net Worth. Yeah it helps to have connections to those in office to become chief justice but once that person is out you don't face being kicked out unlike the cabinet.

I’m not American but love learning about the presidents and US history I do have soft spot for Reagan, Lincoln, Truman, Garfield etc who came from ordinary beginnings. FDR is tremendous but did come from a wealthy background as did Teddy Roosevelt. Without their wealth would they have been able to be educated and mange their health issues, severe in FDRs case to have a career in politics and lead the country. Most of Polk's wealth came from two separate plantations and one large scale farm he inherited. Polk is a plantation owner, but not in the traditional since of the word. By the 1840s a new custom in the United States is forming "absentee plantation owning", where you buy a fully operational plantation but putting someone else in charge of managing. (An overseer.) Polk controls two full plantations, one in Mississippi the other in west Tennessee. (He also inherits his father's farm in Maury County. He is generating money off the enslaved labor, but it isn't large enough in acreage and total number of enslaved people to fit the classification of a plantation.) At one specific time Polk would have between 25-30 people enslaved in his own name, but in reality, between 60-80 individual people would be enslaved by Polk throughout his entire life. Polk realized the issue of slavery could hurt him politically, so for a large number of his slaver purchases he'd go through middlemen to buy and sell slaves. (Even while as president.) Polk would send family members such as brother in-laws and cousins' money to purchase an enslaved person but direct them to put it under their names. Then conveniently have them send the enslaved person to one of his plantations. By the time of Polk's death in 1849 his estate was worth between $300,000-$350,000, most from the plantations. His wife would receive the bulk of his estate, around $250,000, including one plantation. While the rest went to family/debt, his younger brother William getting the farm and the family home in Columbia. His residence in Nashville was not a plantation but did have a large domestic slave household.
