I did a bit of fixed-wing flight nursing when working in southwestern Alaska and it was really exciting and scary at the same time. I enjoyed flying in the smaller planes and saw some amazing things. Like a huge herd of caribou and a moose with several wolves around it. I learned a great deal about self-reliance and the importance of frequent assessment. Also learned how to keep an IV from freezing and batteries don't work as well in freezing cold.

Somehow got to get you to interview a Flight Nurse with the Royal Flying Doctors Service in Australia. I think you’d be equally blown away with what they have to do

I have so much respect for the MICA teams, especially aboard the RFDS or air ambos. Like one of my mates went into premature labour in a small town in rural Victoria, the ambulance drive in bad weather (unsafe flying conditions) took two hours. Years later her daughter was in a major car accident, kiddo was at the Royal Children's in under an hour (she was fine, badly broken leg that healed up nicely).

When flight attendants started in the early days of commercial flying, *all* flight attendants (stewardess back then) were required by law to be nurses. My grandmother was one. This was when training was in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Ivthink it's a major loss that flight attendants are no longer nurses. If there's a medical emergency, they immediately ask the passengers if there's a doctor or nurse on board. Being in a plane is geographically isolating, as the nurse in this video says. It's so critical to have people always on board to handle medical emergencies. I know that modern flight attendants get some medical training, but it's more like basic first aid and CPR. I know that modern nurses go through a lot more traininv thsn nurses from the 1950s, and thats due in part to technological advances, and they would probably feel their training would be a waste as a flight attendant. But, I still think flight attendants should be trained in more than basic first aid, because emergencies can and do happen. Flight attendants go through only a few DAYS of medical training, which is absurd.

I was on ECMO for a very long time. They didn’t think I would survive and if I did chances were I wouldn’t cognitively be here. Guess what? I am here MuFKRS. They gave me 6 months to live 9 years ago! God doesn’t want me, the devil is afraid I will take over and I make Jesus say his own name in vain! Thank you for all you do.

As a former Army medic that has spent a lot of time on QRF I can say as a 20 year old kid starting out the time doing my job was so much better than waiting to do my job or even worse time after having done my job when I was supposed to be resting up for the next job.

I know a paediatric nurse who had a critically ill infant that had to be taken to a better equipped hospital (small country), with a vehicle travel journey that typically takes a minimum of three hours in light traffic. The ambulance got that baby there in an hour and 20 minutes! They were so relieved to hand the baby over. No idea what happened with the infant unfortunately.

omg this reminds me! in grade one of primary school (i’m from australia so idk if that sounds weird but i was around 7 i think) my teachers husband was part of the “royal flying doctor service” (pretty much the same thing i think) never really thought of it much then but damn that must’ve been hard since i imagine most of the work would’ve been around LOOOOOTS of very desolate dessert

Lol knew an old flight and fixed wing nurse. She would fly from like Mexico to Canada to oversea i believe. Anyways. That was before we had maps on our phones. She got sent to another country, couldnt read anything, she gave up and told her boss she was gonna just find a place to stay the night and try to figure out where she was and where she needed to be in the morning 😂
