Just coming over from Country View Acres channel. They gave you a shout out in their video this morning. My wife and I have a farm in Western Pa. We have 5 cows and a bull. raise calves every year. Over the years we tried a couple sheep but when their wool got thick, it seemed like the electric fence had little affect. We quickly gave up sheep farming. we both work during the day and couldn't give them the required time or resources needed to keep them home. I think we had them 2 years. enough to go through one lambing. That was fun.

Another great video, also those newborn lambs are looking awesome, as are the rest of your flock! I know what you mean when it comes to electric fencing woes, it is an awesome tool for regenerative ranching, but can be kinda tricky to figure out at the beginning. I remember the first paddock I let some calves into, they ran right through the electric fence and into the neighbor's field, but I know now it was because I hadn't broke them to electric fence before😬 just another great lesson learned. I think getting a stronger charger with at least 2-3 joules would be a good idea, since I've heard the sheep are more insulated from the shock because of their wool, but yes the solar powered units are pricey! I've heard cyclops chargers are a good brand, plus made in the good ole U.S.A, but they are a big investment, especially when starting out. Keep up the good work, you are being an amazing testimony, not just as a regenerative rancher, but as a born again believer. Thank you and God Bless!👍

Great job on these videos :) I stumbled onto your channel a couple days ago while watching Greg Judy and subscribed. I raise katahdin sheep and do the intinsive grazing. I found that 2 strands of Polly line instead of the tape work well for keeping our sheep in. We also use the Premier1 intellishock 120 for it. It puts out 1.2 joules and with the small sized paddock we set up each day gives a pretty good jolt. As long as there's something for them to eat in the paddock, they don't escape. I used it in a pinch to keep a neighbor's watusi bull (giant horns and bad attitudes) corralled for a few days until he could make it over to get him. It worked well, though I'd recommend something beefier for a long term setup with them. Again, great job! :)

Another suggestion for your hog panel patch is to get some large outdoor grade zip ties. They go on fast, don't rust or rot and are cheap. Plus, they don't cut your hands. Evan at Country View Acres cued me into your channel. I like what I see. You're doing great. We had sheep when I was growing up. It's a toss up as to which critter is dumber, sheep or domestic turkeys. We had both. Both are pretty dumb, let me tell you.

@yoopermann79423 жыл бұрын
can i give ya some tips? 1st. a good tight boundry fence is a must, horse high ,bull tough, pig tight, that is one of the things grand pa used to say about a fence,, never cull except for meanness, deformaties, or bad drought, it takes a while some times for live stock to learn your system so wait for a couple of seasons before doing that cull,, i forget one thing, if a mama dont raise her baby to weaning time,, or she always has a troubled birth, to much to write here.. great video
@theShepherdess3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for always being so kind with your advice! I really appreciate what you share. I am glad to hear that you do not recommend culling if the sheep escape. 😄 -the Shepherdess🐑🌱
@yoopermann79423 жыл бұрын
@@theShepherdess the only reason i can see to cull any live stock for meat is, they have deformaties, they are mean and try to hurt you or some one else, or they do not fit your grazing system,, or you gotta medacate them / baby them all the time

Everything I'm reading says to not let your animals drink from the pond. I have 2 ponds on my 5 acres and well access in two places. My dogs drink from the ponds without an issue. I'm reading I should have the ponds tested otherwise bring it in from the well. Have you had your pond water tested?
@theShepherdess2 жыл бұрын
I have not had it tested. I would be interested to hear more about the pond water issue. We don’t use any of the chemicals or herbicides that many employ as maintenance for their water’s edge, so I don’t honk toxicity is an issue. I have heard you want to keep the cattle from wading and depositing manure in it. My sheep really dislike being wet, so they won’t go any farther than to take a drink. Cows will often wade in ponds over summer, which does lead to serious issues with contamination. We also have a ton of healthy pond life (fish, ducks, etc) which tells me the water is fairly healthy. Thanks for the comment and let me know what you find. -the Shepherdess
