As a conductor, you don’t expect musicians to look at you constantly. That’s why you shouldn’t “overconduct”, meaning being full on the whole time. This way when something important comes that you NEED the musicians to be looking at, they will know it’s important and pay attention.

DO MORE OF THESE Edit: I saw a comment about how they wanted to see a pianist’s eyes switching between clefs, and I think that’s a great idea. Y’all should bring on guests that play different instruments, like the opera singer y’all had that one time who showed awesome opera performances, the pianist from the Ling Ling challenge, and DEFINITELY have Hilary Hahn on. It’d be interesting to compare her sight reading, playing orchestral, and playing a memorized piece

It's actually making the advantage of eddy having perfect pitch while sight-reading noticeable. when eddy was sight-reading, he was looking a bar ahead, at least in the easy ones, and with the time of a bar, he can actually build up and idea of what the next bar sounds like, then play by following the music inside his head. which is a great advantage. when brett was sight-reading, he was actually playing notes straight from what he sees, and its more like a reflex action where he trained himself to play the note when he sees it right away, which is how i personally sight-read music cuz i dont have perfect pitch.

@ajchandra77354 жыл бұрын
@@heyytheree Tell your brother that he doesn't practice enough Lol. There is no way we know for sure how perfect pitch affect sight-reading abilities, that's why it is a good proposal for research topic. I read your comment before that you are twelve, and assuming your brother is not a lot older or younger than you, and definitely not as old as Brett and Eddy, lots of things still can change throughout the years which will affect you (and your brother's) abilities. Experience factor is one thing for sure.
@814melinda4 жыл бұрын
I think not necessarily only those with perfect pitch can read a bar ahead. Those with good relative pitch may be able to do it once they started the piece. But for me, same as you and Brett, I cannot read one bar ahead🤦🏻♂️ my teacher tried to train me this (read 1 bar ahead ) but to no avail.
@57Raz3 жыл бұрын
I have to imagine the main advantage to sight reading is mostly to the person who has done more sight reading. Moreso than perfect pitch or playing skill, it has to do with the raw speed of processing the notation. Also, once extremely familiar with the scales in a key, it seems (from watching) that one can sort of fill in the middle notes based in familiarity with the fingerings? Maybe saving time to looking ahead for accidentals and volume and other details? It was fascinating to watch this. But also just impressive at how well they do pull it all together.

Suddenly, the conductor told me "hey, since the concertmaster is not here and you're all alone, why don't you sit in the concertmaster's place for today?" At that moment I knew I f**ed up. Spoiler: The director ended roasting me bc I couldn't see anything and he wanted me to play aaaaaall by memory. oh wow 😲 this one's really interesting especially from someone who's not a musician like me. It's amazing to know how you function or how a musician functions when playing in the orchestra. In my head, you just play your instrument with no clear idea of how you really do it. Like how does one together with several different musical instruments work or sound harmoniously in sync when playing a piece. Now I have a little grasp of idea of how it really is. Like how you needed a concertmaster, how you followed or maybe translated what the conductor is doing, what the music sheet for, and how important it is to clearly hear the sound or of the instruments so you can all sound as one. It's so wonderful 😲 I'm in awe. Thank you for this video. I'm happy I learned something today. 🥰❤️❤️

I often sing along with professional recordings when I’m learning a choral piece. I’m glad to see you guys occasionally playing along with a professional recording. It validates that method of practicing! I’m also one of those singers who learn the music more effectively when I hear the entire context of the music. I could learn my part on its own, but it will never be as accurate as hearing how my part fits in with the rest of the music. Also, computer speakers not being loud enough is the primary reason I prefer to practice in a car. The car’s stereo can get loud enough for me to hear the music while I sing. Perhaps (if you are able) you ought to try practicing in the car, taking advantage of the high volumes that are possible.

As a pianist, I look at the center of the keyboard, where I can see both hands, or focus totally at the left hand, occasionally looking at nowhere or closing the eyes. Only pay attention to the right hand when it's a tough passage. And as @Kaitlin Zylstra metionend, you sometimes don't realize you're the one playing (which causes some occasional accidents).

I mostly pay attention to the conductor while looking at the music for check points and notes i have for myself. You kinda get engrossed in the music while still being conscious of what you're doing and what's around you. You're conscious of the rhythm, dynamics and the other performers; you have to be slightly mentally ahead, but also expressing the emotions in the moment. It would be interesting to see what happens during an actual performance with different people.

So many takeaways from this one: 1. Props to editor-san for showing how musicians multitask through split screen display, it helps a lot. 2. If it becomes more accurate, eye-tracking device can sort of help with beginners and intermediate musicians training/practicing instruments as well - like for sight reading or how much to pay attention to the notes vs conductor. Just a random idea. 3. BUT the device tends to be less accurate when tracking people wearing glasses, since it refracts light. I had the same issue once playing with it. 4. Imagine the incredible focus X-men's Cyclops must have, having to look at one single target for a really prolonged period of time.
