2019 saw the continued growth of China's global-influence, despite a slowing economy and US President Donald Trump's tariffs. Xi Jinping's China now has the largest diplomatic corps in the world engaged in soft power projects, a reflection of its increasingly-vocal protection of its interests and its growing investments around the world. Many of those investments are part of the so-called Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which is a series of major infrastructure projects designed to smooth trade with the nation. China has been rapidly building its New Silk Road since 2013. Beijing has invested in harbors, railways, roads and power infrastructure in more than 60 countries. With this network, China wants to secure export markets, as well as access to raw materials. For a long time, China has shown a keen interest in Germany and Europe, investing heavily in the Balkans. China is courting German companies developing innovative technologies which could also be interesting for the Chinese market. According to a study by the Bertelsmann foundation, technologies particularly in demand are automotive drive systems, energy systems, biomedical technology and machine engineering.

the problem with the west is their attitude, they expect China's belt and road as some kind of charity, and anything short of giving out things for free, is China's fault and must have some dark motives. Why is it wrong for China to pursue their own economic interest, and negotiate deals with another country without scolding from the West? belt and road countries are adults and don't need their colonial mothers to hover around. There are 2 goals for belt and road, one short term, the other long term. 1) the short term goal is for China to use its massive US dollar foreign reserves to subsidize its domestic industries, and export some of its excess capacity in steel, concrete and construction. the construction boom in China is somewhat peaked. so there is a need to export these capacities to other countries who needs them, this way the Belt and road countries get infrastructure investment, and China saves jobs in steel and concrete plants. 2) the long term goal is to build some of these country up as cheap manufacturing hubs, and export some of the low value added manufacturing to those countries, where China would sell them capital goods (such as machinery, and other core components) and high end manufactured goods, ship them to the cheaper belt and road countries to have them put together, then sold back to China where the consumers can enjoy an affordable product. Belt and road is about building countries up for future use, as well as a short term investment opportunity.

Red Power The West betrayed Taiwan because the thought of opening up the vast mainland Chinese market to capitalist enterprise was too seductive. I'd say that the West was taken for a ride in the long run, and I can't imagine what Chinese workers must have suffered in the process. How ironic that billionaire plutocrats support the PRC. This marks the total failure of 'world communism'. Capitalism, communism-------they both tend to reduce life to a series of economic proposals. How dry and unappetizing. I think the Silk Road has to lead to Europe. If it is a road that will stop at Europe it’s a useless road. I don’t think it was the plan of China to invest 1 trillion USD to connect to tiny economies like Russia, Turkey or Iran. Then they build a 1 trillion usd Silk Road to nowhere.

@@petermeter5363 Those Economies are "small" today. That's why the Chinese are Winning. They're thinking 50-100 years down the road. And when their seeds of Investments into these "small" Economies start grow, China will grow More Economically. Also the Belt Road doesn't just end in Europe. It goes across Eurasia, Asia, Pacific/Oceania, Africa, South America, etc. The BIGGEST Problem with the West is that they HOARDED all the Wealth. Dividing the World into 3rd World, 2nd World, 1st World. The Chinese are raising all 3rd-2nd World into the 1st World. That's what they're investing in because they Know everyone wants to be Wealthy. ISJST So u believe China lifted it self out of poverty ? Hahahahaha 😂😂😂😂 China in the 80s was super poor. The last time China tried to develop it self was under Mao and 60 mio chinese where starving to death. When China became part of the WTO the west gave China the status of a developing country. So China could benefit from that status in the trade with us. So pls tell me. The west lifted east Europe out of poverty, korea, japan, After the 2nd world war anything accept for America was poor. (I’m not American) so until now next to all the chaos which America did in the world they contributed to worldwide wealth more than China did. For example China is partly wealthy because of America. So u can’t count China on America’s account of countries lifted out of poverty. Who did China help ? Xinjiang ? Tibet ? Mongolia? If u are not Han Chinese, China doesn’t help u at all. They just try to boost their slowing economy with the belt and road. Because there are not enough projects in China left and they don’t want the people unemployed. Why else they do all those infrastructure programs with chinese companies ? Why not use people from Russia or Kasachstan ? I take a credit and pay u for work which u will do for me. Does that even make sense ? In 100 years this roads have to be made new since the quality of construction is so bad.

@@petermeter5363 How far in the past do you wanna go??? If China didn't invent the compass Western Europeans would still be stuck in Europe. Without the Riches from China Europe would still be living in caves. Also China joined the WTO in 2001 because the West understood it was too big of a Market to Ignore. It's bigger than USA and EU Combined. That's why the West gave Hong Kong and Macau back in 1997-99. It's the reason why Richard Nixon tried hard to get China to open up. Because USA understood China had the Potential to be the Richest country on Earth and they Wanted to capitalize on the Growth. But just like Donald Trump said, the Chinese OUTSMARTED the Western politicians in NEGOTIATIONS and are now calling the shots lol.

Basically is China saying to every country, “you buy from me but I don’t have to buy from you, ok?. China: “Give me your money, in exchange I give you products. Other countries: what about our products, don’t you want them?. China: no, bye

Shipping by rail is far more expensive than by ships. Building railroads to connect countries that already have ports is China's acknowledgement that they will not be able to secure shipping lanes when America withdraws from that task. B&R is not an advancement but a fallback position.

You missed the point by rail is faster in two weeks or less between Europe and China. By sea may take 3 months. The turnover of volumes shipment is 6 times by rail but at the expense of higher cost.

@@TheKkpop1 No, I didn't miss any of that. In fact I mentioned in my comment that rail is more expensive. The speed of delivery only matters if you're carrying perishables with high margins.

@@jbtechcon7434 A shipping by sea is 6 months in a return trip, which means only 2 turnover in a year. Rail shipping is suitable of valuable small to medium size cargo & perishable goods. Large cargo & bulky but low value products would be best ship by sea. Would your business can wait while your competitors can do many more business transactions in a year.? Btw, shipping by sea is in declining.

China: "You want to borrow MY money, use only MY workers, to build some projects in YOUR country? Country: "Do your workers pay taxes to my country?" China: "No, but we get to establish a trade route." Country: "Done" I don't know if any of these countries who sign on see what's going on. There may be more than I'm missing, but on the surface that's what I've seen so far from the countries that end up giving up their ports after failing to repay. There is absolutely no risk on China's part. The country whom accepts these deals don't even know if they can utilize these routes to benefit from them. Some of these projects cost more than the GDP of the countries they are proposing BRI to.

OFFICIAL Chinese companies will be excluded from infrastructure tenders in Romania. Ordinance, published in the Official Gazette The emergency ordinance prohibiting Chinese companies from accessing public tenders for infrastructure projects in Romania was published in the Official Gazette. The legislation only refers to future auctions, the current ones not being affected. The executive had adopted a memorandum to this effect in January, as announced by G4Media at the time, but the process was delayed by the fact that the former head of ANAP opposed the initiative, which is why he was replaced. The ordinance stipulates that only economic operators from a Member State of the European Union, the European Economic Area (EEA), from third countries that have signed and ratified the Government Procurement Agreement (GPA), from third countries that are in the process of accession to the European Union or from third countries that have not signed the GPA, but which are signatories to other international agreements by which the EU is obliged to grant free market access in the field of public procurement and within the scope. The EU has a public procurement agreement with 19 third countries, including the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, Israel and Moldova, but China is not a signatory.

One of the fundamental displays of Western arrogance is that they're rarely humble enough to listen. On such China-specific topics, one would naturally expect to find an opinion from a real Chinese person. However, Western media never seem to consider the possibility of interviewing someone from Mainland China who actually knows the issue (real Chinese people, experts or even ordinary citizens); rather, they would automatically turn to anti-China "China experts/observers" from Western countries (and in this case, a clueless person from the island of Taiwan) in order to echo their preconceived and prejudiced narrative. If you're not really looking for even a modicum of truth or insight on this topic, but only goes after what you want to hear--the same cliches palatable to your ears, then your self-consolation will only lead to misinformation and misjudgment.

Does it matter?? Who builds infrastructure? Who owns the infrastructure? Who operates the infrastructure? Any New / ALL New infrastructure is Good, excellent, and much needed for our shared global human destiny. Kenya... If China did not build a new railway, it would not have a railway. China built a railway. China used some Chinese and some local labour = jobs for all across many countries. If Kenya owns, operates the railway or China owns and operates the railway... is irrelevant. The choice is NO railway or having a railway. Having the railway has already changed Kenya for the better and will have even more impact for decades, generations to come. The NIMBYs would prefer to have NO railway... just have an empty stretch of land 100s of km long with a width of 3m (width of train) + 3m + (6m) space between + 3m space either side... 18m wide. 18m width is not the 100s of metres of width for a motorway/highway. Perspective people... try it along with Logic.
