When I was younger around 8 my parents took me to Disney world. I was very hyper from sitting still on a plane for 4 hours. So when we got to the hotel my mom told me to go run around in this wooded area so I did. I was playing for about 5 before I heard this low angry snarl. I got scared and ran back to my mom saying there was a monster in the forest. She didn’t believe me oblivious but it was time to eat lunch so she told me to come inside and put on something nicer. Fast forward about 7 years and I find out that was a gators hey I’m here don’t come any closer

As someone from the midwest, I would have never even thought about gators being as big of a problem as they are there. Since that tragedy, I have seen so many images and videos of gators, snakes, etc being in areas I would have never thought. Like walking across the road by the Disney entrance signs, cast members keeping them from ride vehicles on Splash Mountain, snakes going through Magic Kingdom, etc I do feel bad, as it is their habitat, but do appreciate Disney doing their part for the safety of guests.

The honest truth is that Disney didn't have enough signage warning guests of alligators. I get it, it's Florida, no body of water will be alligator free, but you can't expect international tourists to know about Florida's wildlife. I like Bob Iger (he starts his new book discussing this event), but his outreach is relatively phony. In his 92st Y interview with Oprah, he discusses reaching out personally to the family. Oprah presses him that this must have been against the advice of the legal team. This is exactly wrong. A personal apology from a CEO of the world's most famous entertainment company is exactly what Disney lawyers would have wanted, as it avoided any further legal battle. This family should have sued the company for millions of dollars for a lack of proper warning.

The gators are over populated. The only reason there are so many of them are because of human influence. Honestly, alligators are old as hell and no matter how many alligators are killed on WDW property, the species isn't going to die and will most likely be better off in smaller numbers. As a human ask yourself would you rather have 10 alligators or one toddler?

Those fences are not for the alligators. They're a very small effort to discourage people from crossing them. Frankly, in my opinion, they should have been much taller. They're still too easily tempting for children to cross them. But as for alligators, they'll cross them with ease in less than a few seconds! There are plenty of videos here you KZbin where you can watch gators scale fences effortlessly. They are lizards after all. Still, this video helped me feel a little better about Disney, because I've been angry at them ever since I heard about the tragedy of Lane. I was under the impression that Disney did nothing about the alligators other than to put signs up. I'm glad you told us that they remove as many as they can. I wish they could remove them all! (I'm talking about from Disney properties, not all alligators everywhere.) And the state of Florida should NOT be limiting how many can be removed from the parks. There's plenty of room of them all throughout the Everglades, which spans multiple states, there's absolutely no need to conserve them in parks where countless unsuspecting innocent lives are at risk!

I remember following Lane’s story at the time :( so sad. Before that I had no idea how many alligators were on the property. Obviously events like that are rare but I read that there were no warning signs at the area the Graves family was wading. And many of the signs around just said “no swimming” but didn’t say why. IMO parks guests need to be aware of the gator population to stay safe. Guest awareness is probably more effective/important than tracking down all the gators, I’d assume. Great video!

I think it's wise for Disney to remove as many alligators as possible from the resort area. Even one attack (much less a fatal one!) is too much! And with such a large population of guests and visitors, a theme park like Disney World in Florida is a buffet for gators! It seems a bit much to remove the alligator references from the attractions, though. The humorous alligators and crocodiles from "Peter Pan," "Fantasia" and the Jungle Ride are legendary. Who is it unfair too? The human beings that lost their child or an alligator that lost its entire family? I understand it's sad when organisms die... who started it first? This is survival of the fittest... these alligators have been around on this Earth much longer than us humans have. Do you know why alligators have survived so long? It's because they don't give a F about how sad and unfair it is that living beings die. Alligators do not think twice emotionally about how sad or unfair it is to snatch up a little boy. They just do it and survive. Yet humans talk about how sad it is that we kill alligators that are killing our children. What the heckors...... blah blah blah its the alligators natural habitat... and the humans don't have one? Guess who the alligators killed off to make their natural habitat?

S.N.A.P is enforced throughout all of the Walt Disney World resort, but I'm not sure how the other Orlando resorts cope with their gators - would be interesting to look into 🤔 It's a tough position for Disney to be in. Lane's death was incredibly tragic and Disney understandably wants their guests to feel at ease. I approve of the fences/rocks and feel that they do a good enough job of keeping the guests far away from gators. I understand that some gators must be removed, but would also prefer that they be relocated to zoos and farms!
@csmith633 жыл бұрын
I came away from your video wanting clarification on something. Are there figures on how many of the gators are hauled out to the Disney Wilderness Preserve, including the small ones? I ask because of something there that made me go "hmmmm" that might need a little explaining to those not versed in the ways of a land where golfing comes with gators as part of the charm. You say "the little guys are lucky," because they get relocated to the Disney Wilderness Preserve, which is because the approach we take to alligator and wetland management is all about balancing equations. The DWP is NOT the area around Ft. Wilderness, by the way, but former ranch land returned to being wetland and given protected status in the land version of a carbon offset, letting humans develop where it's more convenient to us for some reason but balance that out by preventing development elsewhere. Still, we're talking roughly the same county, not hundreds of miles. The gator experts (and I'm not one) also calculated things like bite radius and alligator-to-prey proportionality to determine that a gator 4 feet or smaller isn't a mortal threat to humans (i.e., big enough to clamp down, drag us into/under water, and get us down the gullet); it's also likely a still-growing juvenile, given the average sizes adults reach. So, the logic here is that we don't make the animal rights people mad by killing indiscriminately and get good marks for conservation practice, which theoretically promotes natural ecosystems being protected, too. The thing is, though, that in a natural ecosystem, lots of the little gators don't survive to adulthood because alligators aren't squeamish about a little thing like cannibalism. Yet if we're just carting all "the little guys" to one preserve, that sounds a bit more like an alligator farm that no one's watching too closely. Alligators are territorial and do tend to stick in a home range, but they also pretty much show up anywhere there's more than a puddle in Florida and do plenty of wandering. We just had one of those viral stories recently because a large gator didn't let itself be bothered crossing the road--a busy interstate--when it could just lie down on the warm pavement and enjoy a sunny snooze despite the honking drivers! I'm not suggesting we suddenly start slaughtering all the alligators, but they're not an endangered species and actually seem to be booming in population. Adding an unmanaged alligator farm seems like a bad way to solve a problem that's going to get its own kind of payback down the road...
@hillarystevenson95885 жыл бұрын
I loved your video! You made some great points. I vacationed at fort wilderness as a kid and we swam in the lake and visited river country frequently. In the 90's I don't remember any encounters with alligators. That may be because Disney actively removed the animals after the late 80's attack. To answer your question Ariel, I am not sure if blocking off the beach and removing alligators is a necessary combination in preventing attacks. I personally think that this attack could have been avoided if Disney had kept up with their local alligator habitats. With that being said, I think Disney is a good company that has leaders who want the best for their patrons. This was an unforeseen tragedy that no one person is to blame for. Please do not blame the parents for letting their toddler splash around the lake water.

As far as upping the number from 300 to 400, if they took precautions that may not be necessary HOWEVER the police stated the stomachs were empty so the gators were starving and that’s not okay so the extra 100 that will be removed will hopefully give more food to the gators that are there. Why do people feel bad for alligators that attack our children??? Some animals are wild beings and attack and literally kill our children. Yet, people express how bad they feel for the animals because they are being controlled?
@tumbledortrickster65042 жыл бұрын
I think it is due to the fact that the animal is just doing what the animals normally do. It is more a problem with lack if information to tourists. If you tour an african safari, you generally expect dangerous animals, in the same vein they should spread awareness of the dangers of the animals so people can respect them, until for most people tourist too come to associate Florida waters with danger as well. There are more attacks from domesticated animals like dogs then alligator attacks. It seems the entire group of animals is being punished for the actions of one acting as a regular animal would. Back to the dog example, it would be like a dog attack on an irresponsible owner happening and all dogs in the town being killed because of that. It wasn't the dogs fault if it felt threatened and reacted. It is extremely sad that a child lost its life, but to demonize an apex predator for acting like a predator is kind of dumb. The people should be held accountable for informing their guests to be careful. I have lived in Florida for years and gators get everywhere, removing them wont keep them gone. If there is water in florida, chances are high there is a gator in it. They can and do even climb fences. Also they aren't out to be bloodthirsty killers that are extremely aggressive. There are crocodillians that are, but gators are actually quite docile and shy. They aren't out to always just kill, usually it is only to feed themselves when they do. Punishing an animal for just trying to survive is what people are upset about. And not even the animal that attacked a child
@hillarystevenson95882 жыл бұрын
@@tumbledortrickster6504 I agree, gators presence could have been better maintained. Alligators shouldn't be seeking out food let alone preying on toddlers in this setting. Gators shouldn't be attacking guests while on property at a major theme park. They shouldn't have been that hungry in the first place. "Of course there are more attacks from domesticated animals than there are from alligators." Strategically, the people who have dogs cannot be compared to the people who are attacked by alligators simply through stats. It's like mice in the kitchen... everyone knows they are present but expect them to be controlled.
