You two are very smart to test durian for the first time at Or Tor Kor market because all products here are quite good and a bit expensive but it’s worth. I saw lot of foreigners tried durian for the first time and they picked over ripe durian. It’s smell badly and the taste is a bit bitter sometimes...Although i’m Thai, i can’t stand the smell too.

Thanks Ben Ben. We wanted to try durian for the first time at a place that specialized in it. Or Tor Kor market and the guidance of the vendors made for a really enjoyable experience! The smell actually doesn't bother me at all :)

Ripe durian is soft, almost runny. If it is semi-soft or hard then it’s not ripen. Lots of people in south east Asia may eat durian semi-ripe. But it’s best when it is ripe. Traditionally durians were pick up from the ground, soften by the monsoon rains. Hence there were two seasons for durians, during the 2 monsoon seasons in the year. Today, that natural sequence is broken. Additionally, new breed of durians are produced and they are harvested from the trees rather than pick off the ground after they have ripen and fell. This happened at night when the temperature was cooler. Try not to eat durians unless the meat is creamy like custard.

@@authenticfoodquest The quality is not same. I thing Thai is the best of quality for durian in this world. That why they are export to everywhere arounding the world. China is always import durian from Thailand not somewhere else.
