I was pondering this verse. It is a double edged sword, as you say. I took it in a different direction, not to distract from your point, but to draw it out clearer. When a man works on another man to his good, they are as a man sharpening a plowshare. To do better work. This is as you said, and is the kinder good. When a man sharpens another in opposition, like sharpening a sword, they sharpen them against themselves. You are making your enemies better enemies when you best them in battle, but do not kill them off completely. You have taught them how you fight, not how to make peace. This will cause you strife. So it led me to Phillippians 2:3-5. I will trust you to look it up. You focused on the benediction, but the malediction is also beneficial for a good Christian to know. Humility is not to be forgotten, as it might save your life.

First, you show a piece of steel being sharpened on a STONE. That’s not iron sharpening iron. Who rubs two pieces of steel together to sharpen them? No one. Steel is used for bearings, engine pistons, etc., things designed to rub together and not wear, not sharpen. You don’t understand this most basic section of Proverbs in the Bible. Iron sharpens iron like a hammer and anvil sharpen iron. By pounding on it. smashing it down into a sharp edge. You DO NOT WANT TO BE the iron that sharpens other men. There’s good evidence to suggest that “As iron sharpens iron” is not a positive verse, but a negative. The most common way iron sharpens iron is by pounding on it. Like p
