Where in the book of Luke does it go through the genealogy of Mary? If you’re talking about chapter 3, it is evidently talking about the genealogy of Joseph. Is there another place where it talks about a genealogy for Mary? I am still very confused as to how the Scriptures can claim that Jesus is the descendent of David and only mean it in an adoptive sense. Where else does it do that in God’s word?

If Jesus is both the root and the offspring of David, then Jesus is his own Father, and his own Son.

If you look up 'root' in the dictionary you may find another meaning that doesn't produce such flowed logic. 3 a : something that is an origin or source (as of a condition or quality) … the love of money is the root of all evil … Jesus is both the source and the product symbolized by David's throne. .

I am more confused now. I read all the comments and I still don't understand how is Jesus from David's lineage, if He is God and Joseph is not His biological father. Jesus is God, God came before David then how is Jesus in David's lineage. Please someone explain it as you would to a child.

I hope this helps: Matthew 1 gives the genealogical proof that Jesus, in His humanity, was a direct descendant of Abraham and David through Joseph, Jesus’ legal father. The genealogy in Luke 3 traces Jesus’ lineage through His mother, Mary. Jesus is a descendant of David by adoption through Joseph -AND- by blood through Mary.

It's not "lineage" per se that qualifies a contender to claim Messiahship, but Royal Lineage. In 2 Kings 11:1-3 the daughters of the King were not threatened by Athaliah because only males are Royal Seed (therefore Mary is excluded). Jesus' father would have to be a direct descendant of David's to be "Son of David". Don't get me wrong, I believe Jesus is the Messiah, but the NT genealogies are bogus in making that determination. I believe what Peter believed, that Jesus is the fruit Of David's loins (not from someone else - see Rom 1:3).

He was King of Israel and God promised that his seed would rule the Kingdom forever. Meaning being the Messiah would have to be a seed from David as God promised. So that is why it is a big deal because it's what God promised

@@Gran_555 hello, please try not be hateful, I was not hateful with my comment, but I would like to remind you that in the Jewish society from today, and from the time the Old Testament was written, the messiah was supposed to be sun of David, this means a strict man only line. And when it comes to reading the bible, it happens that I am not Jewish, but when I read the bible, I read it from an objecting point of view, if you want, you can put your self in their place, and try to understand their view, maybe that will make you change your opinion or make it stronger.

The text is EXPLICITLY clear this is the GENEALOGY of Jesus. The text is also irrefutably a paternal genealogy. Joseph is listed in Jesus's genealogy. An adopted child does not have the genealogy of his adopted parent. Therefore, Jesus was not adopted by Joseph, Joseph was his biological father. So sad that people misunderstand the phrase "before they came together" to mean martial relations.

Huh? If Jesus is biologically related to Joseph that means he is under the curse of Adam's sin, which is a contradiction. Besides there is really no difference between an adoption or birth. Sons are sons, daughters are daughters.

You miss an important part, Mary was impregnated by the holy spirit, in all the bible, the children are always associated with their fathers lineage not their mother or adopted father. You saying Jesus is son of cousins, meaning possible inbreeding.
