Have you ever wondered what it takes to keep schools in our area clean? Custodians have a lot of responsibilities and clean up a lot of messes.
Jose Hernandez has been a janitor at Longfellow Elementary School in Idaho Falls for 27 years. He’s responsible for keeping the school clean, sanitary and looking good.
I spent some time with Jose and learned part of what it takes to be a school custodian. Check out my experience in the video player above.

Been many, many years since I was in school. Yes, I agree with the other post, our custodians were the best.

I attended private Catholic School. We were taught to treat our classroom as we would our homes - don't mess. From age 7, we had to deep clean our classroom at the end of the school year. We really enjoyed doing that and taking pride in our school. Hired cleaners kept all the other areas clean daily. I believe that is an excellent idea. It involves responsibility, something we all need to have. I was expected to keep my bedroom clean and tidy at home, so brought that to school. Children like being trusted to do the right thing, and it being acknowledged.

I was a school custodian for years and really enjoyed the job m I also learned how to strip and wax the floors, lots of work, but it was always nice to see the school clean for the students and teachers the next day.

I remember going to that school and Mr Hernandez or Jose was one of the sweetest man I have ever met and when I was in 4th grade he’s wife passed away and he still came to work and work so hard and I remember he would come into the lunch room snd come and laugh and just and hang out with us some of the teachers there were really rude but he’s was the sweetest and he always cared about the school and the kids I love you Mr. Hernandez ❤️❤️❤️

Service people in every school district can tell you who the drug dealers & worse are in those buildings. Bus Drivers Custodians Cafeteria Staff KNOW EVERYTHING on Teachers & Admin too

I was a school custodian for over three decades. People do not understand how enjoyable it is to spend three hours a day in a cafeteria with hundreds of youngsters. Laughs by the thousands. But I disagree with Jose. Girls bathrooms are the worst.

Must be nice to work at a school that actually spends money on their maintenance dept to have better equipment. We have stone age crap that is so freaking time consuming and hard to use. All our district money always goes to admins raises, admins offices, and teachers.

Wow, I’m a school custodian too & it’s the exact same where I work too 🙄 floor scrubbers from the 1960’s & only about two of them when there’s 6 or more people in the school doing summer cleanup. Everything else we have is old or broken. Just recently my sink In my cleaning closet broke & it’s been that way for almost two weeks without someone by to repair it. A super frustrating environment to work in

@@dscott6616 Very relatable!!! Does your school also cut the air conditioner off during summer to ‘save money’. Meanwhile, custodians are swearing their butts off all day, in stagnant hot rooms?
