@@nickricholetti754 that’s awesome. I tore my rotator cuff fireman’s carrying some shit bag that was sand bagging. SSG McDowell actually was going to recycle me because I was crushing, but I was going to be in worldwide for like 4 months while I healed and I really didn’t want to be sitting around with a bunch of quitters. It really fucked me up being so young and thinking it was all over for me but he really talked me down and made me see that I still had options. I ended up getting hooked up with a PCS to the 509th in Alaska that wasn’t even stood up yet so I took that shit instead of Bragg and dipped. Had a good career, picked up E5 in 26 months, did cool schools, was a team leader in scout platoon, then got blown up in Iraq and medically retired. I’d do it all over again.

Being a “regular” Army soldier if you get the chance to work with Rangers, you shut up, listen, and watch. I spent a miles gear 5 day engagement with a Ranger. Neither of us got “hit” the whole time. He helped lead me to graduating Valedictorian of that class. It was PLDC at Ft Lewis NCO Academy. Class 91-05. Thank you SGT Nelson of 2nd Battalion 75th Rangers.

My old man was a Ranger in Vietnam, 68-69. Bronze star and a Purple Heart w/Valor. He is without a doubt the toughest man ive known. Being a Lrrp, his missions would make your hair stand up. The stories, the ones he has shared with me are fascinating as well as terrifying. He's beat the odds by being smart, well trained ,and an overall badass.

Give him my respect from a military buff from the UK. I really developed a passion about learning as much as I could about the LRRPs when first reading 'Dispatches' by Michael Herr (my favourite war memoir ever out of 250~). He talked about a LURP in 4th div. who ended up doing 4 tours, the guy even creeped even the guys in the green beret camp - killer had shoulder length hair with a torn off bit of tiger stripe parasilk for a sweatband and no officer dared tell him to cut it, he wouldn't even go to chow or for a shit without his 1911 and kabar at a mimumum. When Herr interviewed him he'd been the single survivor in like 8 separate ambushes. On night ambush he'd take downers from his left shirt pocket and uppers from his right and said that them 'really gave him the range, one to cut the path for me, one to clear it' I think the quote it. Took me years to realise what that meant. Basically the downers would calm. Him down enough to not panic n think clearly n the uppers would give him the energy to go n 'clear the path'. Always wondered what happened to that guy, pretty sure hed gona full asiatic. After reading that page I was OBSESSED. I have about 4.or 5 books on the LURPS n ranger school n the whole shebang. I would LOVE to pick your father's mind but I don't think he'd like to open up to some random brit. Please genuinely tell him one more person respects what he did for his buddies back then, it cant have been easy. Massive respects.

I went through RIP in "82" and was assigned to 1st Bat. I was the only one in my platoon who had NOT been in Vietnam. Luckily I realized quickly that I had been put with "the old guys" to learn. What I learned first and foremost was that those guys were the OG bearded bastards.

RIP in 1978 C Co 1/75th I don’t remember many Viet Nam rangers. They were definitely in the minority. I re-enlisted from the Marine Corps. Ranger class 7-79 I’m holding the guidon in the graduation picture

I had a manager at my old warehouse job who was 75th ranger regiment. We had pre shift meetings and the managers would say what they had to say like how much we would process or when we would be done and such, but when he led the meetings it was like he forgot he wasn’t in the regiment anymore and talking to a bunch of civilians lmao, you could tell he was a natural leader accompanied by being a ranger, his meetings even had the old women fired up and ready to go 😂😂😂😂

We ran a 5 minute mile in a formation of 60 or 70 men one frozen Georgia morning in 2005 in R.I.P.. A 5 minute mile was puke P.T. Our Cadre was SFC Erin Nash, who went on to win The Best Ranger Competition that year. He was 6'2" or taller. The average Ranger student was 5'8" inches or shorter, so to do a 5 minute mile with him meant we took 659 more steps per mile more than he did. We did that as a group of 60+ I never vomited, but several did. They puked or swallowed it, and the formation kept a 5 minute mile pace because it wasn't us that were being trained that day. It was S.F.C. Erin Nash training to be The Best Ranger. Being a Ranger is and will always be about pure intestinal fortitude. We will eat enemy flesh tonight to survive long enough to eat enemy flesh tomorrow. RLTW! WINTER STRIKE 2004! X2. The tomahawk is sharp, Boys! Let's save the country and take some trophies.

(1982) Im Marine Infantry B Co 1/9 wpns platoon 0331. My Platoon Sgt. Sgt Nash who carried the nickname Sgt Rock repsectfully earned, applied for and was sent to Army Ranger School. He finished 2nd in his class. I was on Firewatch the day returned. I didnt recognize him. He had lost about 90% of all his muscle tone and his eyes were sunk vack in his head. We talked for a minute before he climbed ibto his rack. He slept the rest of that day, through the night and half the next day. We thought he died in his sleep. It took him more than a month to get even somewhat back to his normal. Much repect to Army SF

This is true for ANY combat unit in my opinion and experience. A lot of young Soldiers fresh from basic/ait/Airborne school think they’ve finally made it only to realize they JUST started and will have to prove themselves to the ones that matter, the men to their left & right.

RIP was the worst experience I had in life , it’s absolute hell , here’s the thing , In order to get there , you first complete 8 weeks basic training then AIT , 5 weeks same bunk , 3 weeks Jump school , then up the hill for 3 weeks RIP , there’s no break , for me it was straight through , the hardest shit for me we’re not the runs , not the PT , not the urban fighting tactics,, the damn 20 mile road marches killed it for me , our last road march while at 2/54 was a 15 mile low weight , I had fractured my right hip stress FX , and it only got worse , I kept driving on , graduated Aborne , which isn’t really hard , just saying , you get lazy on the 3 week airborne training , and you can come and go , but when Ranger Cadre show up on Airborne Grad day , they made us take off those disgusting red berets , threw our gear in a rack truck , and in full dress uniform ran , 7 , 8 miles to the huts , Ft Benning , the hills go straight up , this was summer , we finally made it , and in formation someone wiped sweat off there face , lol , we did front leaning rest and flutter kicks for about 4 hours , orientation started that night , we changed our gear out , and went on a little run , it got hard like we never seen it ,, shit was inhuman , people started dropping like flies , my hip joint was swollen to the size of water melon next morning , I had to go to medical , I was at hospital 4 days , and was eventually re classed , then other problems manifested, so eventually I was not passing runs , long story short , chapter out , honorable D\C , but R-E code was a 3 , I did get 9k from the Army lol , 60% of my original platoon , including the top studs , washed out on spinal , knee injuries from Airborne, one guy , our platoon guide , literally fractured his C spine , this was 97 , when Ranger Indoc was referred to as Rip , 3weeks of pure hell , now I heard they changed it to rasp and it’s now 5 weeks .,man ,, it’s hard hard hard , those Ranger dudes got legs like tree trunks ,, non human built in a lab . Yep that sounds about right, that's exactly how they picked us up from airborne school. We got word not to wear a beret just your patrol cap. Everyone got a lesson on not saying clear as well lol. After sprinting to the RIP barracks we got smoked for hours then they asked who wants to quit. It took 3 to 4 weeks weeks to get a class full enough to start RIP so imagine being there 7 to 8 weeks finishing then going to 3rd, no breaks.

There is one thing I wonder about the rangers. Since it is a regiment, it has several batalions/companies. Is some of them better? Do they put the new guys one place, and have the experienced another place? Or is everyone same lever, and it is random who goes out and do the hard jobs?

In high school I took 4 years of jrotc, my instructor for the last two years was a former ranger and colonel. He taught me a lot, and instilled some great values in me, and I’m always gonna be thankful for that. But my brother that was a straight A student and far better of person than me he treated like garbage. I don’t know what changed, I’m sure the majority of rangers are great people, I’ve met several and they were always kind. I will say this though, never let a tab, badge, or uniform fool you. Do everything you can to see the person underneath the decoration.

My father in law was an army ranger. He carried himself in an interest manner. He observed everything about a person and everything that was going on. I had no idea he was a ranger until we found his paperwork. For some reasoon he has tons of patches that i cant trace because i know nothing about what they mean. Seems to be like that in most combat units. As a Marine infantryman going to boot camp, going to Infatry Training Battalion is nothing, they want to see you do a work up and combat deoyment before they see you as equal in any sense.

You have to have a good sense of humor to make it in the Ranger Battalion, there will be up and downs and all arounds but quitting is never an option. I went thru RIP in 1981 and it got us ready to ship to company and then a whole other world of hurt will befall you, depending on what company or platoon you get assigned to.

RRC is considered Tier 1 but us "regular" blokes (like John) are technically considered Tier 2. Regiment is Army's premier raid force though...might as well be "Tier 1" in that regard.

It’s one of the last refuges of that old generation brotherhood that actually maintains standards and moral integrity. A couple females passed ranger school but I’m not sure there are any in the battalions. Anybody know? I’m glad I spent time in the infantry while it was male only.
