This is something that I've heard and I'd like to know if it's true or not seeing as how you attended a sporting event with enthusiastic cheering. Are sports fans in Japan far more reserved at sporting events in terms of being loud and celebrating a victory? Or is that just another myth?

American hug-culture is pretty well-known in Japan; my in-laws had a mix of trepidation and excitement the first time I went over to Japan that I might just hug them immediately. Of course I knew Japanese culture so I didn't, but some part of me thinks they were kind of hoping I would. I think I did when we were leaving Japan on that trip, and have since then.

@@samsatogardner That's adorable... thanks for sharing! Do the in-laws initiate hugs now? Or do they just go with the flow?

@@captain_britain Hahaha... my nieces will, but they're both 25 and under and I've known them since they were tiny. My sister-in-law won't initiate, but she will go with the flow. I don't really do bro-hugs with BiL and my wife's dad. Might be a bridge too far. They're cool, though. Dad always tries giving me strange unmarked alcohols at some point in the trip (he spent many years as a tour guide, so picked up lots of local liquors), and BiL is a good guy though he works a lot.😁

There's a story behind Detroit's Coney dogs (for those who don't know): Despite the name Coney dog being named after Coney Island in Brooklyn, NY, the Coney dog originates from the Midwest. But why? In the early 1900s, many Greeks came to the US through Ellis Island to escape the Balkan Wars. Before moving to the Midwest, they stopped at Coney Island and had Nathan's world-famous hot dogs. They were so impressed that they wanted to spread it wherever they went and came up with their own recipes. In Detroit, there's a tense rivalry between American Coney Island and Lafayette Coney Island right next door on which one has the better Coney dog. In fact, Lafayette Coney Island was actually founded by the BROTHER of the founder of American Coney Island! Like how Mister Donut became a thing because its founder Harry Winokur chose to no longer work with his brother-in-law, William Rosenberg the founder of Dunkin' Donuts.

I can relate to the temperature adjustment. I grew up in the TX Gulf Coast. Temperatures rarely even got down to freezing, and when they did for those 1-2 times a year, it was just for a few hours. When my husband brought me to visit his family in Grand Rapids in Jan, I thought it was absurdly cold despite it only being in the upper 30's. His relatives laughed at me. For our next visit we were able to visit in summer, so we could go to the county fair. I thought temps in the upper 70's low 80's were paradise while those same relatives were suffering. I just looked up the high at home on my phone and they couldn't believe that our upper 90's low 100's was our normal.

After my first tour to Japan on 2015, I fell in love with the people, the culture, the cuisine, the land. Been back for two month long tours since and I've really enjoyed learning from the expat community on KZbin over the years. Been following your videos for a long time, but never realized you're a fellow Michigander! How wonderful to see you two enjoy family time over Thanksgiving and explore Detroit and Frankenmuth together. It put a big smile on my face to see Tommy wolfing down a coney in a U of M hoodie and washing it down with a Vernor's. Doesn't get much more Michigan than that!

First off, it's absolutely NUTS you're taking time to respond to all these comments! That's a LOT of work. Don't burn yourself out! Second, Detroit is my hometown, too :) - Living here currently, making plans myself to have an extended stay in Japan. It's so fascinating to see your husband being amazed by how things work here in America. You took him to some of the nicer spots. Sadly, he didn't get to see the riverwalk, which is SOOOO nice in the summer. Yet, Downtown is beautiful during Christmas. You and your husband warm my heart and soul. You deserve all the success you have and more. I wish I'd bumbed into you when you were here. I have so many questions. God Bless you! And merry christmas!

Tommy seemed genuinely excited to see the place where you were born and raised. Too bad he only had a short visit, but you definitely packed a lot into it. When will you return to Japan? I'm looking forward to your next video. As I've said before...Keep them coming. ❤

I relate to Tommy a fair bit, visited Illinois and Wisconsin to see some friends a few years ago and it was the second time I'd visited the US since I visited Cali as a child and the only time outside of Europe since before I was a teen, and I had the same excitement, even as a Brit it was a culture shock.

What a lovely video. I hope he enjoyed himself - I imagine there was plenty of culture shock but he seemed to handle it all so well! Sad he had to leave you, though! I hope you’re doing well. ❤ Sending love from KY 😊
