Corporations would own all means of society, and people are forced to live in housing bunkers on the property of set corporations. Everything would be digitized, disabled, old, and mentally disabled people would be killed off, as there are no profits to be made by individuals who cannot work. There are no profits in human kindness, we will live day to day, with no future. Companies will continue to grow and become mega corporation who in will have their own private military protecting it's workers as resources have become too scarce. The environment would be devastated. Space travel will not happen as it's not profitable to invest in nor do we even try to develop the technologies to do so. Money should not be able to make more money, therefore interest should be prohibited. At end of life, the total amount released by the person should be drawn out of circulation. No: Automation does not mean more money goes to people. More money goes to people when more people are working and getting paid for working. Automation means more money goes to investors who then invest in more automation and then get more money which creates the wealth divide, slums, and economic refugees. Adam Smith did not know about automation and assumed paid employment. Star Trek exemplifies a non-fiscal society but which is still based on non-renewable resources and this is immaterial for this argument. Technology, moral use of violence and standards of living do not mean a sustainable and equable society emerges. Hopefulness doesn't cut it. Capitalism depends upon inequality and regulating capitalism ensures that such inequality is minimised. State policy ensures sustainable practices but only where capitalists are forbidden from lobbying for profit enhancement policy. Education to avoid destructive self-interest groups and to promote sustainable and cooperative practices is vital from childhood, through schooling, and into adulthood via news and media. Robots will let us sit about chatting philosophy? No. Nice hobby but I want to do something productive.

For example: Right now we have a strong societal drive to combat climate change. A small proportion of the population is increasing profit based on production and out concsumption. Creating trash is locrative, taking extra measures to reduce trash isnt in a economical sense. Another part of the population is only faced with the adverse consequences of enviromental destruction, while not generating any money from it. So now, if all of us profit from the capital we are generating, wouldn't that all of a sudden give all of us a strong insentive to keep polution going, as this would be the most efficient way to us maintaining and increasing capital even if inevitably it will lead to our demise?

- Exactly. Given that the butcher, the baker and the brewer have competition from other butchers, bakers and brewers. Very important aspect. Each and one of them will want to win the market and sell more products then the other butchers, bakers and brewers. And how do they achieve that ? They will try to sell better quality products at lower prices. - Why ? Why is the ideea of the brewer, the baker and the butcher gone ? "Those companies could not be competitive" - Neither then in the 1870's nor now in our present the baker, the butcher and the brewer are NOT competing with with GE, FORD, GOOGLE, FACEBOOK and AMAZON :))) Not really. In fact the butcher, the baker and the brewer are benefiting from the existence of Google, Facebook ( ads = publicity. Bigger reach online ) and all the above mentioned companies especially from Edison. Now that the baker, the butcher and brewer have electricity they can produce more products with wich they can flood the market therefor lowering the price of set products. Electricity in general lowered the cost production drastically. Dont know what to tell you but cheap beer and porkchops are fine with me son. - Also, if these companies that are mentioned are monopolies they are voluntary monopolies and people choose the use their services or products willingly. Free will benefits society.

Ever heard of price signals? The bloke in the video above is a moron, even in monopolies there will be competition, instead of price based competition it will be service value based competition, The Government is the furthermost entity away from collectivism, the state is a byproduct of Capitalism and real socialism is anti-state, real socialism is impossible on a small scale so attempts of large scale socialism always degenerated to Capitalism with strong States. Businesses Don't steal the idea of an internet from you and me, Private business facilitates research, production and distribution and some funding, while the Government in the World Wide Web scenario just invested a larger share.

What a great idea. Take a share of a company’s profits and put it in a fund for the common people. ….like taxes maybe? 😄

Varoufakis might be a brilliant man but this vision of the future, of a post-capitalist utopia, is wrong-headed. People enjoy productive and meaningful work when they feel valued and in the absence of exploitation. People enjoy the communality that work provides. Shared endeavours and cooperative production which sustain both community and families provide a sense of purpose, absorption and commonwealth. The workless society envisaged here would feel psychically sterile and ultimately pointless. People do not necessarily need or want excessive toil but most people need meaningful tasks and objectives from which to derive satisfaction and some sense of purposeful accomplishment. I don't want a robot army serving me breakfast or helping me to wash myself.

You say, "People enjoy productive and meaningful work when they feel valued and in the absence of exploitation..." That may be true, but I doubt 90% of the jobs out there deliver that. Read Bullshit Jobs by David Graeber
