In a capitalistic society, profits are sought over the good of people, and people are exploited for that sake, if people benefit from profits, that's a plus, but it's never the other way around. As it stands, we are definitely heading towards a cyberpunk society, where people would have to work (x)hours a week or even a month to have a place to live. Corporations would own all means of society, and people are forced to live in housing bunkers on the property of set corporations. Everything would be digitized, disabled, old, and mentally disabled people would be killed off, as there are no profits to be made by individuals who cannot work. There are no profits in human kindness, we will live day to day, with no future. Companies will continue to grow and become mega corporation who in will have their own private military protecting it's workers as resources have become too scarce. The environment would be devastated. Space travel will not happen as it's not profitable to invest in nor do we even try to develop the technologies to do so. We will be stuck in an endless cycle, being slaves fighting for corporate interest in the little resources we have left on the planet.

Capitalism almost ended after world war one. Russia became communist, Hungary became a soviet republic, Spain was on the verge of anarchy....we were so close. The next logical step was for Germany to become a soviet republic...that didn't happen. Germany fell to nazism. Next horrible year for ending capitalism was 1991. The USSR was dissolved and with her, nearly all communist countries became capitalist again. Humanity came so close nearly 2x. We cant have the same mistake happen again, we must fight back against the capitalist class.

In postcapitalism money in circulation to reflect life itself, detach earnings from occupation. Every man should release a monetary unit every day and use it. Money should not be able to make more money, therefore interest should be prohibited. At end of life, the total amount released by the person should be drawn out of circulation. This is how the markets will adjust to needs and demands without imposing consumption upon people. Public sector should be served part time from all.

A minimum wage earned by working 35% of the entire human lifespan should pay for a dignified existence throughout the entire human lifespan. It is that simple really. Now, calculate what the minimum wage must be, plus what the UBI must be. (for example, 30 years on a minimum wage should pay for 20 years of growing up and 20+ years of retirement without compromising 'the dignified existence' throughout the entire human lifespan)

The solution you propose violates human nature. In Capitalism there is only the owner and the Employee. Ultimately, the 'Employee' makes the products, takes those products to the market, sells the same products, he made, to himself and finally he pays a fee known as Profit to some 'Owner' for a permission to own the same products he made and sold to himself. The owner gets to collect profit for doing nothing.....and many call that 'earning' instead of 'taking'. ==--==--==--== Now I'll teach you all . (The solution Marx failed to see is that the distribution of the ownership must look like a bell curve. There must be a Law that controls the shape of the curve ( i.e. for each 'Y' amount of citizens there must be a 'X' amount owned that fits the bell curve.) ) THE CURRENT DISTRIBUTION OF 'WHAT IS OWNED BY WHOM' RESEMBLES A NEEDLE (I.E. A DELTA FUNCTION ) It must be made to look like a bell curve and the only way it can happen is by means of a Law that TAKES from everybody and then re-distributes it in a way that makes the bell curve a reality.

@@barbarajohnson1442 I would dare to say, at fundamental level the laws we have do not address correctly the distribution of ownership of Wealth among the citizens. Also, they fail to address correctly the distribution of control of Power among the citizens. For example, We make many laws which protect the ownership of wealth but we never make laws which ensure every individual owns sufficient Wealth for such laws to have effect on them. (For example , the entire law system is based on the idea that it is acceptable to take from the others more than you give to them. Basically, In Capitalism there is only the owner and the Employee. It is 'taking' but sadly the laws we make protect the takers without providing any compensation for those from whom it was taken. (Small business owners have to wear "the owner hat" and "the employee hat" at the same time to different degrees. The 'owner' exploits the 'employee'. )

No: Automation does not mean more money goes to people. More money goes to people when more people are working and getting paid for working. Automation means more money goes to investors who then invest in more automation and then get more money which creates the wealth divide, slums, and economic refugees. Adam Smith did not know about automation and assumed paid employment. Star Trek exemplifies a non-fiscal society but which is still based on non-renewable resources and this is immaterial for this argument. Technology, moral use of violence and standards of living do not mean a sustainable and equable society emerges. Hopefulness doesn't cut it. Capitalism depends upon inequality and regulating capitalism ensures that such inequality is minimised. State policy ensures sustainable practices but only where capitalists are forbidden from lobbying for profit enhancement policy. Education to avoid destructive self-interest groups and to promote sustainable and cooperative practices is vital from childhood, through schooling, and into adulthood via news and media. Robots will let us sit about chatting philosophy? No. Nice hobby but I want to do something productive.

Be careful what you wish for. Yes we’ve all had enough of Crony Capitalism and in a “Post Capitalist” society many will gladly work for a purpose that serves the rest of us. But most people work for an incentive rather than doing the “right thing”. Idleness and lack of purpose could easily become the norm here. “Makers” will resent supporting the ”takers”. “Why work?” A big autocratic and self-serving state will soon evolve to ensure we all do the “right thing”. It’s hunger for “dividends” will suck the life out of everything else. Think Venezuela and Cuba. Rather than fantasise about “Communism without Communists” We should surely concentrate on how we break up monopolies.

I have a question. While I really like this concept, I can imagine it making it harder for us to tackle certain societal issues. For example: Right now we have a strong societal drive to combat climate change. A small proportion of the population is increasing profit based on production and out concsumption. Creating trash is locrative, taking extra measures to reduce trash isnt in a economical sense. Another part of the population is only faced with the adverse consequences of enviromental destruction, while not generating any money from it. So now, if all of us profit from the capital we are generating, wouldn't that all of a sudden give all of us a strong insentive to keep polution going, as this would be the most efficient way to us maintaining and increasing capital even if inevitably it will lead to our demise?

But don’t tell me I’m required to share my ingenuity with everyone else. There’s no good economic reason for that.

'Freedom dividend' is the corporation's idea of a UBI. The real UBI redistributes Wealth , the 'freedom dividend' redistributes portion of the wealth which the wealthy choose to spend/dispose of/ invest. Huge difference. Ginormous.

In which terms will "we" asset which companies would be the ones that they give part of their profits to this global fund account? Would it be a challenge for blue whales and try not to be blue whales anymore, in order to avoid taking part in this situation?. I mean, it would be easy for the shareholders to divide their shares to many well being companies and lower blue whales' market caps. But thinking of this, this could be an alternative way of unmetacapitalizing the global economy. So, win win situation and more cash for the poor.. It works!!

This is the only realistic way I see to a decent future. The "degrowth" anarco-eco-communism option is just deluded regression to me, good only for a small portion of the people that likes that way of living, but not suitable for a whole civilization, especially one that needs to become a space one, the only way to ensure that Earth's life lives on.

I agree with nearly all what you say but the remedy is to tax monopoly not profits - a Land Value Tax, other monopoly taxes and environmental externality taxes are a far better solution. Platform monopolies advertising monopolies can all be taxed and take taxes off of normal trade, normal incomes etc. While I understand the complexity and thought needed to arrive at this conclusion it is very important... This is so important as taxes on Land, monopoly and externalities rewards all to act in ways that help the planet and others using less resources. It punishes those that extract economic rent from others and harm our planet. This drives behaviour and societal change for the better.

- Exactly. Given that the butcher, the baker and the brewer have competition from other butchers, bakers and brewers. Very important aspect. Each and one of them will want to win the market and sell more products then the other butchers, bakers and brewers. And how do they achieve that ? They will try to sell better quality products at lower prices. - Why ? Why is the ideea of the brewer, the baker and the butcher gone ? "Those companies could not be competitive" - Neither then in the 1870's nor now in our present the baker, the butcher and the brewer are NOT competing with with GE, FORD, GOOGLE, FACEBOOK and AMAZON :))) Not really. In fact the butcher, the baker and the brewer are benefiting from the existence of Google, Facebook ( ads = publicity. Bigger reach online ) and all the above mentioned companies especially from Edison. Now that the baker, the butcher and brewer have electricity they can produce more products with wich they can flood the market therefor lowering the price of set products. Electricity in general lowered the cost production drastically. Dont know what to tell you but cheap beer and porkchops are fine with me son. - Also, if these companies that are mentioned are monopolies they are voluntary monopolies and people choose the use their services or products willingly. Free will benefits society.

Ever heard of price signals? The bloke in the video above is a moron, even in monopolies there will be competition, instead of price based competition it will be service value based competition, The Government is the furthermost entity away from collectivism, the state is a byproduct of Capitalism and real socialism is anti-state, real socialism is impossible on a small scale so attempts of large scale socialism always degenerated to Capitalism with strong States. Businesses Don't steal the idea of an internet from you and me, Private business facilitates research, production and distribution and some funding, while the Government in the World Wide Web scenario just invested a larger share.

Varoufakis might be a brilliant man but this vision of the future, of a post-capitalist utopia, is wrong-headed. People enjoy productive and meaningful work when they feel valued and in the absence of exploitation. People enjoy the communality that work provides. Shared endeavours and cooperative production which sustain both community and families provide a sense of purpose, absorption and commonwealth. The workless society envisaged here would feel psychically sterile and ultimately pointless. People do not necessarily need or want excessive toil but most people need meaningful tasks and objectives from which to derive satisfaction and some sense of purposeful accomplishment. I don't want a robot army serving me breakfast or helping me to wash myself.
