The sounds we make in our boats that travel into the water are important to understand when bass fishing. Can our voices be heard? What does walking on the boat deck sound like? How loud are the graphs underwater? Understanding these sounds can help us when bass fishing.

It was definitely something I didn't expect to be as clear and audible as it was. Especially with the front and back graphs going. I was out there recording it wishing I had someone with me to experience it as it was happening. Can't wait to dive into some of the others like the FFS stuff.

I make custom crank baits from balsa, cedar, etc. I sometimes test the ones with rattles by just having my kids put their heads under water and tell me how far away they can hear it. They could hear the one in my profile picture at 40 yards. The way sound travels in water is pretty shocking. It’s unreal… and a bass can literally hear or sense crawfish on the bottom enough to feed on them at night. Yeah they’re hearing the sonar clicking.

I covered my kayak paddle shaft with pool noodles for this very reason. I was approaching a trout cruising and feeding slowly on emergers in the surface film hoping to get within fly rod range, and when I just very slightly bumped the boat with my paddle, the trout scampered off like it had been stung. Pool noodles went on that afternoon. The fish can hear/feel absolutely everything.

Thank you Steve for the time and effort that you go to in order to bring us all of this great information. As a former (retired) fisheries researcher, I well understand what it takes to collect and compile scientific information and get it distributed to the necessary stakeholders in the conservation community. As a research diver and a lifetime avid fisherman, it has always been an eye-opener (ear opener?) to me how even slight sounds will travel through the water, from the perspective of relative amplitude and also over extended distances. I have not ever been diving near operating sonar equipment, so this work of yours has held strong interest for me specifically. Please keep up the good works for us sir. You are appreciated.

Pre-placed cameras to show reactions-but how to get a camera feed in place without impacting the study? A possible collaboration with BamaBass-although water clarity may affect outcome. Also curious on learned behaviors-larger fish that may have been caught/released may respond differently than smaller, naive fish. Great content Steve! So much fun to see what the underwater hydrophone. Interesting in thinking about how far or close to get to fish in an area.... the distance away - side imaging really came thru loud and clear at the dock. An an Electronic Engineer in school we used to measure everything, but not everything measurable is meaningful. Just thinking about this great demonstration, but seeing today's tournaments being won w/ a tremendous amount of electronic noise being put into the water by these 10k - 50k multi-screen, multi-transducer GPS locked 102 lb thrust set ups. On any given day w/ other variables set up, may make a difference, but those pros fish in all kinds of conditions and still big set ups are winning. Great stuff as always and makes me say hmmmm

Yeap I'm definitely ready to hear that! I haven't heard Garmins is more quiet, I would have thought they all sounded similar? I'm curious in difference between FFS transducer & regular 3n1. That's 3n1 was loud! Makes me glad I turn mine on standby when I'm not using it. Unless I'm scanning & marking waypoints. I keep my transducer on standby so I'm not pinging all the time. Im curious to see fish reaction when the transducers are turned on?

Excellent video. Thanks. I try to actually turn my graphs off when not needed. I also run an aluminum boat with carpet. Even I can hear creaks and moans on the deck as I step around. I wonder how much noise does the heads of the new lowrance ghost trolling motor make? They creak alot above water.

You really need to get your hands on a forward facing sonar unit, and see how it sounds in traditional mode and perspective mode. Also what does the FFS sound like as it rotates across an object.

Good video Mr. Steve; interesting to be sure. That pinging directly under your boat sounds almost like a chatter bait. I guess to a bass the only difference is that the sound is more or less stationary and it doesn't create a felt pulse on the bass's lateral line like a chatter bait or a Colorado bladechurning through the water.

I saw a video where is guy did underwater sound from Garmin Livescope LV32 vs LV34 transducers. It was a stark difference even between those two. The LV34 has greater range but much louder than the LV32.

This is solid information. Evolution may resolve the the FFS ethics issue. We saw how fast the whopper plopper went from a big fish magnet to a mostly smaller fish, less frequent bite bait in a few short years. I have to believe that sound wave pulse formation is as critical to survival as any predatorial or survival threat that fish will encounter.

Crazy what the fish can hear from above. I was listening to the audio book "How to think like a fish" by Jeremy Wade talks about how, when he carp fishes, he moves super slow, almost crawls 20 ft back from the shore. I though this was a bit extreme but after this video, seems like a reasonable behavior. Thanks for this cool video once again! Any plans on doing what it sounds like approaching from shore to a bank of water? Also, in that book, Jeremy talks about how light bends and to fish, though a bank angler is standing back from the bank 5 ft, it could be perceived to the fish, that the angler is leaning over the bank shore line.

Being a behaviorist at heart... how I train my dogs, how I haze wildlife to direct it to safety, etc. I can't imagine the oldest fish not being educated to avoid sonar clicks. I do know I have some waters here where I do way better out of my kayak than my rigged up alum. Grumman running the sonar.

I definitely feel that I would run the motor as low as I can get away with and when fishing shallow probably turn all the graphs off, or at least not let the side-imaging left on when fishing shallow after I have checked/scanned an area. Lots more questions to investigate for sure.
