The heavier weight kicks up a lot more debris too. Probably kicks loose some food for the bait fish which might help bring the bigger guys closer

I have been using these on a 1/4oz free rig for a couple years but not quite that heavy. I like the those on a tiny child rig as well when targeting spotted bass in thick wood. The issue you have with this is that if you hook a large bass in heavy cover, you don't really want that small of a hook as you risk straightening the hook. I like your underwater view.

Was. Fishing friends of mine lake. While working on his house So in the evenings. I’d throw off his dock ((. This lake has shallow shorelines that don’t go deep until 100-200 yards out. )). Full of tiny little sunfish. As long as they were there I’d get bit. Couple days ago like you said small sunfish left. Seems so did the predators. This being sept 20th in Minnesota

I've rigged a ned bait like that several times before. It was one of the ways I experimented with fishing a ned with a more weedless presentation. It worked pretty well and I was able to catch some bass while doing it, but I haven't done it in several years. I'm going to have to pick it up and try it again!

Another great video Steve! Short, to the point and very informative! Supposed to go fishing this week and will certainly try this out for smallmouth and let you know if anything happens! We’ve just got some cool weather and rain in NE Oklahoma for the next week, so is the lighter colors still good in clear rocky bottom lakes? Swim jigs have been working well with white grubs close to the bank.

This was really interesting, thank you for sharing! I've been using the lighter method you mentioned (#1-1/0 hook, 1/8-3/16th oz weight) to flip and pitch into light bank cover and scattered hydrilla with a lot of success. I don't think I would have really considered beefing up the weight and hook like that without seeing the underwater footage. Awesome!

As a BFS fanatic, I'm hesitant to up the weight. For me, a 1/4 oz is heavy! That said, you may be on to something, especially for those using conventional bait casters. In the end, small baits catch more fish. I think fishing has become overly influenced by tournament fishing. I'm with Ned Kehde on this, I prefer quantity over quality. That's what makes for an enjoyable day on the water. Too many people obsessed by the "fish of a lifetime" idea.

Steve, good video on the Free Rig…. BUT…. The I think the 1:08 Free Rig is intended to replicate a natural bait. So, why not compare the jerkbait / fluke with a floating fluke like the Strike King Z Too or Baby Z Too. The larger 5” Z too floats well with a wacky style hook. A Little slack in the line will allow the fluke to start rising slowly. Then, lite pops. “Dare to Compare” !! Rob G

I so enjoy your videos!! It feels like certain Senko colors are softer than other colors. Adding colors to the water tear test x the # of worms would be a Herculean feat to attempt!!! But, relevant when adding strengths to the variables. Some Senko colors feel notably softer Water Gremlin Bull Shot are pinch on Texas worm cone shaped weights, all the way down to 1/64 oz. Pinching 1 above the wacky hook is an option also, instead of using a 1/8 oz jig keep it closer to weightless + a little extra sinking oomph. Pinching it up the line a bit also changes the effect once the worm hits the bottom, sort of like a Carolina or free rig would with a lift & drop style but with a pinched on weight. (hopefully I'm not butchering the description) (NY does not allow lead split shot so I don't really know if these would be legal or not there)

I absolutely loved this video! It hooked me on your channel-super cool and informative! I was thinking it might be really interesting, and probably valuable, if you made a similar video using photos of live baits like shad, minnows, crawfish, waterdogs, bluegill, worms, and aquatic bugs. For the crawfish, it would be great to show different color variations-like red, tan, light, or dark brown. You could even place lures next to the live bait they’re designed to mimic for comparison. One thing I noticed in this video: I found myself stopping and rewinding to bounce between different views. A side-by-side comparison would make it much easier to absorb the information. I’m planning to watch this video multiple times until I’ve got it memorized! You answered a question I’ve wondered about for a long time, and I love that you included underwater views. I had thought fish might not need blue cones because the water filters it out for them, but you answered that question also. This video is definitely going to make me a better fisherman. Thanks for making it!

This explains alot! I have 3 major different ponds that I like to fish. One is crystal clear, but has no crawfish in it and lots of bass, so I do really well with bright yellows, whites, and pinks. Another is murky green with lots of moss, frogs, and duckweed, so black & dark reds work well. Then the other is a river runoff with a rocky bottom, and has bowfin & gar in it so green pumpkin & purples do well. So, it just goes to prove the point that you gotta pay attention to the life of the pond/lake and fish with what the fish are looking for.
