Ren Gill is Welsh - it's all real; he battled health issues for years (over a decade) with several of them ruined by misdiagnoses and wrong medications wreaking havoc on his nervous system and immune system. He is currently pursuing specialized treatments to repair is autoimmune system and nervous system in Canada but he lives and his heart resides in Brighton. It is worthwhile noting that performance was live and done in a single take (third of four attempts for the audio, and filmed with multiple cameras). Ren has been composing songs and producing his own beats since he was a young teenager. He does covers for his busking and occasionally performed original songs too.

He is a rapper, a bard, a spoken word poet, a goofball, deeply emotional and has a very down do earth attitude. He also has a (some might say) rebellious view on politics (his songs Crucify Your Culture, Money Game 1 and 2) but he never disappoints. He has been through hell and back and has risen from it oozing art 🖤

This is the kind of artistry that gives "broken" people hope. Ren, through this performance piece, has become to a lot of people exactly what he stated in the song, "...the voice that you hear when you loosen the noose on the rope". So powerful, so impactful. The song structure itself is incredible. It starts off as a battle between his positive (Angel) and negative (Demon) aspects, the negative then makes an overpowering last ditch effort to reign supreme, tearing free and trying to take control, but ultimately fails as the final act, being the "God" aspect, emerges Triumphant, though still acknowledging and accepting that it will ALWAYS be a battle because we are all "a coin with 2 different sides". It's a beautifully cathartic and raw musical masterpiece. Ren is truly special. Welcome to the Ren rabbit-hole, it's a trip worth taking. This was the 4th take he did and yes, it was done live. Wait until you hear some of his other stuff, especially his storytelling ("The Tale of Jenny & Screech"). You haven't even touched the breadth of this young man's talent yet. The pig character (imo) represents the doctors and therapist who have essentially butchered him for years through their misdiagnosis. It's the system that focuses on peddling more pills than on genuinely trying to help to fix broken/ill people, caring more about profit than individual health. The bastardization of the hippocratic oath. He literally thought he was going insane because he was told repeatedly that the pain and symptoms he was experiencing were all in his head (psychosomatic). He had reached a point where he literally resigned himself to dying before he reached 30. Turns out he had Lyme's disease the whole time and it ran rampant through his system for 10 years, even to the point of causing brain damage. Ironically, if Ren hadn't gone through what he has, would he have ever made the art he has? There's no question that his suffering has shaped his music and now he's finally getting the recognition he undoubtedly deserves. I've said it before, I'll say it again, Ren is special.

Ren was Born in Wales but now lives in Brighton England, at the moment he is in Canada Receiving Specialist Medical Treatment, and has been there since the beginning of the Year. Ren was discovered at 19yrs old busking in Bath England while he was studying Music Performance at Bath University, by Producer Eric Appapoulay who got him a contract with Sony Records. Unfortunately within weeks of starting to make a record he got ill with Flu like symptoms and pain all over his body, unable to continue with the work he eventually had to return home and the contract expired. He spent many Years stuck at home unable to do anything because of the illness, mainly just going out to Doctors and Hospital appointments, he was constantly being given different diagnoses, all wrong, and being told all his pain and suffering was in his head, whilst being given drugs for his deteriorating Mental Health, because nobody could tell him what was wrong with him. After 7 or 8yrs of this, and seeing multiple Doctors, Therapists, Alternative Homeopaths and all sorts of Quacks who said they could cure him, he was lucky enough to find a Doctor in Belgium who diagnosed him correctly with Lyme Disease caused by an Animal Tick bite. This was 7yrs too late and the damage the disease had done was extensive, in this time he was unable to make much music as he was so ill but made video blogs about his struggles and posted them online, one was seen by a Doctor in the USA who offered him free Stem cell treatment if he could get to the USA. He spent 12 weeks in the USA getting painful treatment and when he returned felt better than he had for many years, he wasn't cured but was able to start making Music again, of course Some of this Music was influenced by his anger and bitterness towards the Medical profession and big Pharma. He's spent the last 7yrs releasing Music independently, he writes everything, plays all the instruments and produces all his own Beats and the Videos are all Directed by him. All through the the last 7yrs he has still been ill and not cured, his fans have raised money for him to have Specialist Treatment in Canada, over $300,000 at the last count, the undiagnosed disease plus drugs he was wrongly given for other misdiagnosed problems still cause him daily issues and they are trying to repair some of the damage, he has been there on his own without family or friends since January, and could be there until the end of the year getting daily experimental treatment. He has an amazing story and is a Humble person, and having been through so much this is why his fans are so protective and Loyal to him. If you are interested in his story i suggest you watch an interview with him on Justin Hawkins Rides again Channel. Hope that Helps if you managed to read it all 😆

I love this format of introducing your friends to these great songs, and a huge reason is that it gives us a chance to see you experience the song again. This song gets better every time you hear it, as most of his songs do, and the second, third, and fourth reactions are all 'better' as well. The appreciation for it grows with each listen, and that makes the re-reactions that much better. As part of the introduction to the song maybe you could drop a quick note that he is independent, and that this song is a one-take live recording, which really adds to the appreciation for the performance. There's a small asterisk next to one-take, but it's inconsequential imo. All that back and forth is 100% live, and it's amazing. Either way, two great reactions here. I'd really recommend watching his recent interview with Justin Hawkins, seeing him speak so candidly was very intersting, and gives another level to appreciating him, he's a very humble and genuine guy.

This is raw pain, raw truth and raw courage. At first the message just takes all your attention, and stuns you, but the more I watch this, the more I appreciate the range and depth of his skill. The arrangement alone is a masterpiece, and that's without his musical intelligence, and his poetry. WHAT a Songwriter, and Word Painter! I like that he ends on Hope and Resilience and emphasises learning to manage his illness -rather than succumb and allow it to manage him. At the same time, acknowledging that this is a pendulum and a balancing act. Everyone can relate to this at some level, but particularly those living with psychosis. Living with psychosis is tough. They way thought and mood disorder disables most if not all areas of function is devastating. Early diagnosis and early intervention is critical, but it's important to seek help at any stage. Its also important for people to understand that the incidence of psychosis is massively on the rise, driven primarily by the increase in the use of recreational drugs. I don't know if this is any part of Ren's story; but it's now well recognised that SIP [ Substance Induced Psychosis ] is not a 'stand alone' reaction, but a key alert indicator and trigger for the development of ongoing - often lifelong - disorders of thought and mood. Most of which sit in the Schizophrenia spectrum or Bi-Polar range, often transitioning across both. Accompanying these are the high risk of comorbidities. Ie: also the development of long term anxiety and or depressive disorders. People who know they have a family history of these often have a genetic vulnerability and should NEVER touch mood / consciousness altering substances. The risk of triggering life long mental illness is that huge. But, for many, psychiatric disorders also emerge with no identifiable trigger. The bottom line is; don't put toxic shit in your body or brain, and if you have been already, get help to stop. The higher the volume taken and the longer the use = the greater the disability. This is also true for Weed ( Home grown or Synthetic) which has been genetically modified to now have 25+ times the THC component than was in the stuff that was around in the 1970's > 80's. It's clear now that we are looking at subtle, but progressive, brain damage. This message should be out there in all the schools and social media.
