Virtual reality will become more developed, theres no doubt in that. People who say that it's dangerous or stupid or a waste of time are simply too ignorant,stupid and narrow -minded to even comprehend the vast wonders it holds, and the doors possibilities that it opens.

Just how much idiotic can you be? Training in V-R Is never similar to real-life . And even if it is possible, what difference will it make.Stopping progress on V-R because of some dumb reasons like-it'll be used for bad purposes , Is like saying, hey why don't we just destroy every single gun from the face of the earth. Well news flash bitch! Bad guys will always find a way to DO bad things. "Guns don't kill people.People kill other people." Same applies for everything else.

***** Everything known to mankind will be abused by mankind. Seriously. Dynamite was created for mining, not for killing people. The same with many, no, all other inventions. They were made for something specific, but everything can be used in other ways. When we would think "But what if someone abuses it?"... we would still be living on trees, growling at each other.

What I like about virtual reality is how closely related is is to psychology and to philosophy. The idea of presence, how you can manipulate your brain to see something "real", and so many other ideas of how virtual reality can be influenced and manipulated makes it a field that is super interesting from a educational perspective, and something I look forward to experiencing in the future!

@Baronstone

***** That would be a mistake. Not because the commercial version will come out right after, but because the dev version has a much lower resolution than the commercial set and while people love the Dev version for what it is, the biggest complaint is the lower resolution screen used. Also the commercial version has an upgraded sensor system that tracks all head movement, not just turning but leaning and moving your head forwards and backwards.

groovesan I disagree. Sony will no doubt have Morpheus littered with stipulations in order to use it, as with the PS4, which it's designed to be used with. I mean, forcing players to pay for an PS+ account to play online, when virtually all games released now wholly incorporate online play? Kind of dick move, if you ask me. No doubt Microshaft will botch a attempt to compete with Sony's Morpheus, but when it's all said and done, Oculus is the company that isn't just trying to compete, they are literally trying to bring to pass the next evolutionary step in gaming, so it should be no surprise that Rift will likely be far more durable, enjoyable and long lasting, and without all the strings attached with Sony and Microshaft. As for Nintendo (the company I have stayed loyal to since my original NES) has completely shot themselves in the foot with the Wii-U. Utterly stupid move. Releasing a new console that's nothing but a glorified predecessor, which is basically what PS4 and XBone are. I would have thought N would be the ones to pursue a VR system, since they made a shoddy attempt back in the 90s with Virtual Boy. Maybe they're still licking their wounds from that, but the truth is, unless the big three get their heads out of their asses, Oculus the Meek is going to knock all three of them off their thrones in one blow. It should have been blatantly obvious following the release of GameCube and PS3 that virtual reality was the next step in changing the game (no pun intended). Nintendo 64 saw a giant leap for us by translating our 2D side-scrolling adventures into 3D environments with the freedom to go anywhere we wanted. Once word gets out how immersive and fluent the Rift gameplay is, *no gamer* is going to want to be sitting in front television playing a "3D" game on a 2D display. The days of "playing on our televisions" is coming to an end, and Oculus is poised to usher in the new age of gaming with no clear, competent competitor in sight. I'm really looking forward to next year, when Oculus is rumored to make their official consumer release of the Rift. 2015 is going to be an interesting year for Sony, Microshaft and Nintendo. Until then, as AlphaOmegaSin says, "Game the fuck on!" :)

Until they find a good way to trick the vestibular system too, Oculus VR will just be a heavy-hype motion sickness simulator, one that's exceptionally good...
@nephatrine
@nephatrine 10 жыл бұрын
The positional tracking of the devkit 2 really lessens the motion sickness and for the consumer version it's basically gone altogether - barring folks who have real-life motion sickness. There are also plenty of peripherals coming out like the virtuix omni and cyberith virtualizer that are allow you to actually be walking/running in real life to control the in-game avatar - so no need to "trick" anything.
@IsoMacintosh
@IsoMacintosh 10 жыл бұрын
Daniel Wolf "and for the consumer version it's basically gone altogether" Can i borrow the timemachine you used to test the consumer version? In all seriousness, no one can know how much simulator sickness the Rift will cause. "so no need to "trick" anything." First you describe a potential way to trick your body, and then you say that there is no need for it. What is up with that?
@nephatrine
@nephatrine 10 жыл бұрын
IsoMacintosh According to the devs motion sickness is basically not an issue anymore. Of course, that's not a terribly large sample size, but yeah. As for tricking one's body, such devices are NOT tricks since your body IS moving, running, walking, jumping, etc. The only trick is on your mind since that's basically what VR is by definition.
@hollywoodguy70
@hollywoodguy70 10 жыл бұрын
Having worked with both devkits now, I can say first hand... IT IS NOT a motion sickness simulator. For some of us, the dysphoria that causes motion sickness can be really fun for periods of time. I'll be using the Cyberith myself, and expect to be ready for a break every 30 minutes to an hour, and I'm sure that's the way most people will use it as well.
@tayubonetwoone138
@tayubonetwoone138 10 жыл бұрын
IsoMacintosh Chill ***** knows what he's saying, the new dev kit has largely fixed the problem, and it is said the consumer version will be even better. The entire idea of the dev kit was to quickly get developer's ready for VR, not to fully demonstrate the feature and capabilities of the oculus rift.

Rumeysa Durmaz Anyone can by the Rift now for $300 at www.oculusvr.com/order/ Caution, the image is very grainy. There is a sensation of 'being there' because of the head tracking that makes the view change as you move your head in any direction, but despite all the breathless publicity hype and exclamations, it's NOT totally realistic, because of that graininess and the view size is about what you'd see from a swimming mask. I like mine, but you might like to wait until the consumer version appears later this year. Especially check the resolution - Mine is the (developer version) is (see Wikipedia) 1280×800 (640×800 per eye),Consumer version: ≥1920×1080 end of next year approx. Bruce Thomson in New Zealand.

***** Don't listen to Princess Umi Utsukushii. The main reason these aren't available for retail, is because of availability. No one wants to mass produce them, basically. The second reason is because early versions of virtual reality headsets were causing massive damage to the participants eyesight. The problem isn't the light that it gives out, that's nothing. It's the fact that your eyes are SO CLOSE to the screen, and your eyes can't focus on them. The damage comes after you take the headset off. It's very hard to focus the world around you. Everything's blurry. Sometimes this can be permanent. If you value your eyes, you need to be aware that these are very detrimental to them.

I wonder if we'll ever see a SOA like VR for gaming and other uses? The "easiest" way I see this become a reality is by inducing a player in a "dreamlike" state, basicly, you are sleeping a lucid dream in an environment that is defined for you by a system... We all know it's possible, as certain magnetic or sensory stimuli can affect our dreams, but to do this we would need a better understanding of the human brain to be able to produce and manipulate a dream in such a way that it feels real? toughts anyone? And obvious trolls, please stay away, I'dd prefer to have actual toughts and idea's on this subject :p

Interesting idea that we would use a dreamlike state for virtual reality. Because if you know about lucid dreaming, you also know it's not a simple thing to do. Therefore unless players would actually train to remember their dreams and to have control over their actions in it, the system should not only manipulate the dream itself, but also our ability to remember and control it. P.S. hope you understood what I meant, I'm not english.
@lextrux
@lextrux 10 жыл бұрын
actually, yes, that's exactly what I was talking aboutn it wouldn't be hijacking our neuro senses, like SOA and ACCEL WORLD do, but the effects would be the same, and I know it could be done, given we know how to imprint images, sounds and in a form, memories into our mind, but putting our body in a sleeping state, so it wouldn't effect the outside world. And your English was great ^^ It would be an awesome experience^^

www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/272991.php if you could combine some of this new tech into letting you control an avatar in a fully rendered world, then you wouldnt need lucid dreaming. Just the ability to see hear and feel what the avatar is doing, but control it in this manner.

Actually, I believe that NerveGear from SAO is very realistic, we just need enough understanding about nerves to be able to manipulate them with technology. And I believe that in some 15-20 years, it will be possible considering technology based on the human nervous system that we already have (Like robotic arms for example).

Vuk Protic you actually make some valid points there, and it helps with moving around in a virtual space, but how would it trigger you're brain into thinking certain things? Jessy Morin I've seen a study of this on the National Geographic Channel along time ago. The guy did all that stuff and at the end. He put a knife near the dolls crotch as if going to stab but and made the guy flinch and freak the fuck out. Of course he didn't really stab the doll or anything because who knows what would've happened? The patients brain would've probably thought that he's been stabbed and immense pain starts happening in that area but he wasn't really stabbed at all. It would be cool to know what would actually happen but hurting someone mentally and possibly physically would most likely give them some kind of trauma.

They are simply referred to as human gyroscopes. Smaller, human-powered versions of them were a common sight at carnivals and fairs in the 1980's and 1990's. Rig up three electric motors (one for each axis) and a translation program to map the appropriate motions and you'd have a more immersive experience. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if someone has already tried this and got it to work to some degree. The Oculus Rift is already an amazing experience on its own though -- ingeniously simple and even the prototypes are quite inexpensive.

Hmm, is this guy explaining it wrong, or did I think the Oculus Rift functioned different? He says the screen essentially just shows the same picture to both eyes, but each pushed slightly to one side, explaining it like stereoscopic 3D. I was under the impression that the Rift rendered each eyes image different - each with a slightly different perspective on the scene (like real eyes work, this is how we can see depth in the real world). This is also why it requires 60FPS, as it needs to render twice the amount of images as normal (one different for each eye), and should run at at least 30FPS per eye. So am I getting it wrong, or is he?

its a single screen with you eye combining two different perspectives of it from the lenses
@KeviNOlighT
@KeviNOlighT 10 жыл бұрын
Well, maybe he didn't explain it clearly/well enough. What the lenses do is show each eye the half part of the screen corresponding to that eye. It doesn't use two screens, but one that is divided for each eye (this is also why resolution can be a concern). That's its way of producing stereoscopic 3D, each eye sees the same scene with a slight difference in perspective, like you said.
@alienzenx
@alienzenx 10 жыл бұрын
KeviNOlighT you don't seem to be explaining it very well either. You cannot create a 3D effect with one image. I assume what you mean to say is that there are two images one screen, and the lenses just focus the two halves of the screen(which have different images on them) into the eyes for better effect.
@LiouTao
@LiouTao 10 жыл бұрын
alienzen You can make a 3D affect with one screen. That's what the gyroscope is for, so when you tilt your head your image changes along with your perspective. If the perspective does not change as you change the position of your head, you're essentially looking at a monitor. But because the perspective changes as you move your head, it gives the feeling that you're actually looking at a 3D world.

Do you know how bad this is going to be for your eyes? try holding your iphone/ipad two inches from your face for many hours and see how you feel after. I imagine you will feel like shit. Headache, burning eyes, blurred vision, motion sickness, maybe a sore neck and shoulders. When the vritual boy came out there was a warning that you cant use it for more than 20 minutes at a time safely, now the screen is bigger and brighter. If you dont want to go blind in 20 years, i would stay away from this thing.
@HaloEliteLegend
@HaloEliteLegend 10 жыл бұрын
I'm sure there are some barriers in place to prevent you burning your eyes out, and the screen will be softer so it doens't cause this. That is a problem, though. The stereoscopic 3D helps aid this issue a bit by giving your eyes depth, something natural they can turn to, but it will be somewhat of a problem.

trickykid3000 Did some research. There are two optical lenses, one in front of each eye. The optical lens distorts the images so that light does not appear as sensitive to your eyes. Your eyes perceive it as being relatively far from your eyes. So it is effectively not the same as staring at your monitor screen from 3mm away. Also, the displays and everything are fine-tuned to not be uber-eye-straining.

Ethereal Sun mimicing the air and sounds on our ears is surely a good idea. but the fact that we cant feel our bodies walk around in these virtual spaces probably has a lot to do with why we are so unconvinced. I hope, that the next step of evolition of input-output devices will be nervgear, that is used by gamers from Sword Art Online anime. Oculus rift that have been shown in this video is not the same with nervgear, because the nervgear is taking all body under complete control by blocking nervous system of real body, making it unable to move, and all signals that brain is trying to send to the parts of body gets intercepted by nervgear and the nervgear sends the same signals that got intercepted to the virtual body, causing it to move. This is true illusion of virtual reality. While using oculus rift, your body is able to move and, as consequence, your brain understand, that you also have body in real world. It's my dream to become the Sword Art Online player and use nervgear to do this. The rule about death in virtual will cause my death in real world is required.

Rat study is flawed though on account of imagination being an excluded factor in the analysis. An imaginative individual is more likely to get absorbed into the game world based on visual stimuli alone vs fully mapped sensory input, as any adept reader can agree. The more willing an individual is to be tricked, the more likely they will be after all. So I'm sure that while imagination may not directly affect the activation of those "place cells", it could be enough to compensate for the difference between virtual reality and real life- to an enjoyable extent at any rate. Would love to hear some opinions on the matter.

This is what I was thinking. I'm just starting out in hypnosis, and I'm finding it's incredible to what degree our imagination can override sensory stimulus.

You know, despite the stigma associated with hypnotism, I have heard that it can have profound effects on certain people. If nothing else as a "super-placebo", which in itself would be something, sounds like a really cool skill to try and develop for personal growth. But aren't language patterns somewhat of a subset of psychology? I've heard of gestalt psychology, that might be something to interest you, especially in sales if you do anything at all with marketing, though perhaps the philosophy has some bearing in a social sense. Right on with what you're doing man.
@ufoDanceParty
@ufoDanceParty 10 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the stigma is mostly thanks to Hollywood and the works of a few pre-20th century practitioners. Modern practice is well-grounded in science. The oxford handbook of hypnosis is a great resource for the scientific evidence. Gestalt psych (among many other clinical approaches) was influenced by Milton Erickson, the grandfather of modern hypnosis. It's funny because the placebo effect is essentially hypnosis. It's an authority figure giving a suggestion which shapes your experience that follows at a fundamental level, suggestion being the primary vehicle of hypnotic intervention. Yet everyone accepts the placebo effect, and still have a knee jerk reaction to the word hypnosis.

@KerbosYT
@KerbosYT 10 жыл бұрын
Mechanically no, 2 eyes are needed to give the "deep" perception feeling, but also 2 eyes are needed on real life to tell distances, but in practice the brain (ur brain) had learned to tell distances without 2 eyes, so i think it would depend on you and ur personality (u know there's people that moves their joystick when playing a race game, thinking that just by doing that movement the car is gonna turn), so if u have that kind of inmersion on a game probably work anyway.

Yeah man, it should work. It will be just like having a big screen on one eye. The issue is with the 3d depth perception, but i'm sure they will allow a non 3d setting that will give you full screen view for both eyes conversely allowing you to see everything with just one. You're a trooper bro, wish you all the best.

If your brain believes something to be real enough it can effect you in actuality, like if you have full sensory in a VR and you die in the game, you can actually die in real life, heart can fail due to the realism of it. Think about it like this, many cases of people being sick aren't really sick, there's no virus or bacteria, the patient merely believes they are sick so the body reacts as if it is sick and shows all the symptoms of being sick. The brain is a very scary thing.
@HealyHQ
@HealyHQ 10 жыл бұрын
***** Really? There's plenty of such cases, just do a little research. For example, in cases colloquially known as a “phantom” or “false” pregnancy (pseudocyesis), women can have all of the symptoms of pregnancy, including significant weight gain, enlarged breasts, nausea, and back pain. This is most often caused by an “intense desire to get pregnant,” which in turn causes the brain to misinterpret those signals as an actual pregnancy, causing changes in the endocrine system and leading to the secretion of hormones which translate into physical changes in the body. I can also add in my own experience where I had a particularly bad panic attack (I have an anxiety disorder) because I believed I was having a heart attack strongly enough. The mental stress was so severe that I actually did end up going into sudden cardiac arrest, even though the whole thing was all in my head -- there wasn't actually anything physically wrong with me. So, yes, I could easily see someone dying from a mental shock caused by a particularly immersive and realistic video game. It's definitely possible. People susceptible to such things probably shouldn't play VR games, or at least shy away from particularly realistic ones. The brain is indeed a scary thing, as I have witnessed firsthand.

How to make Oculus Rift better: Combine technology already used, with technology from something, say google glass. To create the best VR headset ever. You would be able to move your head freely and change your peripheral vision, while maintaining a single view on an object (with the google glass) technology. This would eliminate the eventual strain and or nausea/motion sickness, that people get after using OR for a while. But anyway, we are one step closer to the future everybody!

I don't really care if my brain can't tell what is reality or not. You put the oculus on so you can experience the game a whole new way or in a whole new level. I just hope the do something like Sao to experience a game where you can actually move around (without getting hurt because of the stuff that's in your room -_-) and stuff, I think that would be pretty cool. (Without the death and not being able to log out)

Okay well, it's not about manipulating our sensory inputs. All we need to do is to create a way to send the input directly to the brain, while putting the user into the same kind of paralysis as sleep paralysis. (Or just make them go to sleep and keep their mind active, so you can feed it data.) Watch the Accel World anime, you only have to see the first episode to see what I am talking about. This crazy crap is going to happen, and it is going to happen relatively soon :D

What keeps us from thinking we're not robots and when we were activated a more advanced oculus rift is mounted on our heads to play in this "Human Life Simulator", but we can't take it off because the impulses the brain sends to our robot limbs go to the human limbs and the robot limbs are tied? I don't know, maybe I've gone too deep.
