What Does the Peace Corps Do? - Not What You Think... | Peace Corps Experience
If you’re interested in traveling abroad or working abroad, maybe you’ve heard the name Peace Corps thrown around but you have no idea what Peace Corps Volunteers (PCV) actually do on a day-to-day basis. Or maybe you’re interested in joining the Peace Corps and volunteering overseas, and your research keeps bringing you back to stories about JFK or these pie-in-the-sky ideals, but you have no clue what you’re no-kidding going to be doing every day or why it will be important to your host community, beyond just having another helping hand around. I get it. Probably the main response that I get when I mention to people that I’m a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer (RPCV) is, "Oh that’s cool! So what do you all actually do...?" Fair enough question. There are a lot of jobs that you can be assigned to do in the Peace Corps, but overall, all Volunteers have the same function and the mission, regardless of the sector where you work or the country where you’re assigned. So in this video, I’ll go over what Peace Corps Volunteers do and why their work is important to their communities.

I don't really know if this applies but my son is considering both the Peace Corps & the Army. Even though we are a multi-generational Army family ( I myself am retired Army) I'm trying to encourage my son more towards the Peace Corps. Is there any advice anyone might be able to offer? Thank ya'll! Long days, pleasant nights!

As someone who taught myself Spanish, but later went on to Uni to get my BA in Spanish, and taking Arabic, ASL, and French classes, I have memorized songs in Arabic and French, but also in Spanish before I understood them. Speakers of both French and Arabic have said I sound very fluent when I am singing along with the song. What this does is allows the learner to feel more comfortable in the language by gaining some fluency or fluidity to sounding like a natural. I am a firm believer in making language part of your life, and there are still songs from the 90's that I sing along with that I still dont know what they are saying, and they are in English. The invention of things like Spotify, I am not looking at the lyrics and have realized what I thought they were saying is not actually what they are saying, in my own language, English. So learning to read and sound "natural" is a huge step needed to feel comfortable.

You're so amazing. Your enthusiasm is compelling I'm even more serious than ever about doing this. I don't want to work for money in the daily rat race. I'd rather do something meaningful. Just feed and shelter me with the locals humbly I'll work for free.

I'm really impressed by your work, in the apartment building where I live, the manager is a woman who reminds me of you. She said when she was in China she lived in a 34 story walk up. Image forgetting something on your grocery list for dinner. When I met her I told her I knew I could learn a thing or two from her. Thanks for the video.

Wow this was honestly the BEST educational video about peace corps I’ve seen so far. I loved how you clearly connected the training and new methodologies with your on the ground experience, I was able to imagine what it was like for you. Great work, I can see how you were a great teacher. Maybe I will look into peace corps a little more 😁

Well interested in community development. For me it is a life long mission. So 40-50 years. Interested in either doing peace corps or a master's degree in community development. Looking to work on the ground in many countries. I will have to be accepted into peace corps. But for me it's not a temporary job, but one that gives me foundational skills that I would use for the rest of my life. Looking at community organizational development in Kosovo.

Oh yes, a question. Is Kyrgyzstan as beautiful as I’ve seen in the photo’s??? And how are the people there?
@ashleynoelle
@ashleynoelle 2 ай бұрын
I’d say the natural beauty of Kyrgyzstan is the best feature of visiting the country altogether. It truly is stunning and a hidden gem the West has yet to discover. The people are nice. The foreigners that visit are usually Russians or people from other post-Soviet countries, so the further you travel from tourist hubs like Bishkek or Issyk-Kul, the more skeptical they may be towards Westerners (and the less likely they’ll understand English), but they’re as kind as anyone else.

Single parents won’t be able to bring their minor children with them. Otherwise, if they’re able to secure childcare back in the US, single parents are able to serve just like anyone else.
