The triskelion was the symbol I was immediately drawn to when I started my pagan journey and have necklace that has a cast iron triskelion that I wear everyday. I’ve always connected it to the triple themes you mentioned and others: the earth, sea, and sky; its connections to the triple nature we see in the goddesses like The Morrigan and Brigid; and the life’s journey of birth, death and rebirth: the immortality of the soul. But I also wear it as a symbol and reminder of my new path as a pagan and dedication to it, my decision to revere and respect the old gods and revere my ancestors.

Last time I caught a video this early the Tuatha Dé Danann were still fighting the Fir Bolg. In all seriousness though thank you for the video. I appreciate the fact that you’re willing to share your personal interpretation of the triskelion despite feeling uncomfortable, and freely admitting that it does make you uncomfortable. It adds a level of genuineness that I’ve come to really appreciate and respect about your content.

The concept of the "three realms" doesn't come from Wicca, though I suppose that they may have adopted that concept in recent years. It comes from medieval Irish texts. See "Irish Perceptions of the Cosmos" by Liam Mac Mathúna, found in Celtica 23 (1999), for example.

I knew that it wasn’t Wicca in that he referenced that thanks for saying that and also sharing where the information can be found.

I like the fact that the Triskelion just seems to be this universal symbol that humans just...make. When it comes to spiritual things, I like to look at lowest common denominators. Things that pop up often and all over feel like that mean more. We might not know what the hell they actually MEAN, but they seem to have a meaning that is speaking to us through the millennia. My personal feeling/representation is the triple goddess. One of my favorite necklaces is this cheap little stainless one I found on Amazon, but it's perfect. It's a series of three crows/ravens flying in a circle bound by a spiral line coming out of each of them. I think it was even labeled as "Viking"...which is a kinda silly. However, it is a nice subtle piece to show The Great Queen my respect, and the triskelion is central to the design.

Thank you for sharing what your beliefs are about this Jon. I appreciate it. I have always heard that it represents the triple Goddess, but that never felt right to me. This is something that I will have to journey about, as I have had a triskelion show up on the lintel stone on a entryway on my island.

Thank you for the video I agree there can be so many meanings to it. Birth Life Death or Life Death Rebirth, Past Present Future even Mind Body Spirit. Which all is nice to think of but choose one or all as long as you respect it & where it comes from.

The fact that spirals are universal amongst all of the the neolithic peoples is interesting. I take it as divine gnosis.

My devotional tattoo is the IPS triskelion, the one from the faith-believe shirt. The path walking is one thing it means to me and also land, sea, sky.

Thank you for this video. I've been drawn to the Celtic triple knot my entire life and even have a tattoo of it that predates my pagan path. But when I began journeying the triskelion kept coming up as a symbol of protection. I now have vinyl cutouts at each direction of my home as part of my wards. I don't understand how it's a symbol of protection as every other explanation of the triskelion makes more sense to me than that. But in my journeys that's what it is so for me I'll stick with that

Hi Jon, great video as the triskelion is a symbol that has cropped up in journeying. On a side note, one of your other recent videos mentioned you Kings of Ireland course with regards to understanding Tuatha more fully, but when I went to take the course, the course content is missing. It just has the housekeeping and review sections. Could you maybe check things at your end when you get a chance, please? I'd really like to do the course to further my knowledge. Many thanks Kerry

Interesting video. I think the original meaning of the triskelions found at Newgrange would have probably been lost well before the first invasion of the Norman English in the 12th century. Catholicism would have stamped out any pagan meaning by then. They probably incorporated any three fold idea of the Catholic belief of the holy trinity, of Father, the Son, and Holy Spirit. The people who built Newgrange in around 3200 BCE, where replaced by waves and waves new comers from Europe. Eventually with them being replaced by Celts or the Celtic culture around 800 BCE. Infact the people who built Newgrange seem to almost completely disappear from archaeological records with a few hundred years of Newgrange being built. Scientists think they must have been killed by the newcomers or died from an ancient pandemic.

You say that Ireland doesn't have a tradition, concerning the meaning of the triskelion, "that survived past colonisation of the Island". - How do you know there was a meaning even BEFORE colonisation of the island? You're making an assumption that colonisation of the island by the 'British' caused that information to be lost ... yet to my mind it 'could' have been lost long before, given the age of the symbol. Incedentally, Great Britain is so named because it is the largest island in the British isles ... but you know this so why pretend otherwise? I'm NOT enjoying your attitude towards the British.

Its a fair comment that the information could have been lost "Before" as the British colonisation was not the only colonisation to have impacted Ireland. What differed with the last colonisation performed by the English crown was the degree to which native knowledge, arts, culture, and language were systematically targeted in order to create a narrative of the "thick Mick" and "dumb Paddy" stereotypes which allowed the people of the island to be further "Othered" and subjugated. This is just a facet of what was done to the people of Ireland over generations and perhaps you should consider why my "attitudes" expressed from a position of hurt and loss for and Ireland that could have been, make you uncomfortable. - regards, Jon

@@IrishPaganSchool I'm aware of what some British people did to Ireland, notably what the political class did to Ireland ... especially the likes of Cromwell, but it's important you differentiate and direct your resentment to those that are guilty of that, and not generalise about Britain and the British as a whole, because when you do that the innocent are offended, but i DO understand the resentment nonetheless, ...it's tangible and real and not easily forgiven. Regards also.
