To the applicant on this episode who might come across this video and some of the not-so-friendly comments: Thank you for having the courage to come on and let other premeds see your app. You are such a sweet person; don't ever let people put you down. Get your clinical experience, maybe take some more science courses, improve your writing, etc. You will get in!

I'm rooting for the guy, but was a little disappointed that he used ORM as a potential excuse for not getting in. I mean, the guy had 2 Ds and a C in gen chem, no clinical experience, and then applied late. cmon bro, you can do better than that. I do hope he gets in eventually. He seems like a good guy. Also, Dr. Gray is right, ADHD is not specific to only science classes. It affects other classes and other parts of your life.

It really upsets me to see people use ORM as an excuse for not getting in and then have very poor applications ... Makes me question if they've done enough introspection to recognize the value of a diverse workforce as well as the importance of their own actions in not getting into medical school. To be honest I think anyone who believes in ORM needs to reevaluate if they're right for medical school

It is always easier to dismiss ones own faults as issues with the system or by playing the victim and not taking accountability. And many premeds come from backgrounds where they live in a bubble of folks from similar walks from life so they haven't been exposed to those from other walks of life, this can make some closed minded. Furthermore, they havent been in the ER and seen anxious/distrusting POC patients immediatley be put to ease when they see someone who looks like them leading their care. It's strange when people say their ORM status is what led them to not be accepted when year after year, cycle after cycle, the vast majority of matriculants are these so called "ORM" and URM students are the vast minority. But it is what it is.

@@E24-t6g exactly. Medical schools are still accepting 80-90% ORM like come on. How can you think you didn’t get in because you’re part of the majority that’s getting accepted.

I don’t think having thoughts on the current state of affairs of med school admissions should preclude you from pursuing such a career- clearly it’s gained the attention of the Supreme Court and millions of Americans. But I do agree this individual needs to focus more on what they can control and less on what they can to control

Thank you Dr Gray for touching on topics about URM and ORM! I think it is incredibly important for students to hear this. I heard you say it a few times in your recent videos and ORM indeed does not exist and accountability must be taken by students who believe that being ORM is why they are not getting into schools.

Asians need way higher stats to have a decent chance compared to a black student. The AAMC is very clear they have affirmative action policies. “ORM” may not be officially be defined, but you’re gaslighting Asians if you say they don’t have a harder shot at getting in. You want Asian students to own up-will black students ever own up to this objective fact literally promulgated by the AAMC?

He basically has no clinical experience. He listed 175, but even that was not clinical experience. This tanked his application, I'm surprised he even got 2 interviews. His non-clinical and leadership is great though. Research isn't required, but I feel like it is becoming highly recommended nowadays, and he barely has hours in research. Late application didn't hurt him as much as his lack clinical experience did. Being ORM had very little to do with his lack of interviews.

After watching this, I'm wondering what was more crucial in his the lack of interviews/acceptances, the late application or lack of clinical experience?

Definitely clinical experience, it's a huge red flag (he basically had none). Late applications can hurt, but if your application is great otherwise, I don't see how submitting a little late can ruin your chance completely. He still got 2 interviews, and one wait list. So hopefully things work for him

clinical experience. late application isn't great, but if everything else is normal to great, you should be able to get in even with a late app.

Being an “ORM” is definitely not your problem. I’m so tired of this excuse.

I understand the importance of not using "ORM" as an excuse for not getting in when you have clear flaws in your application, but I don't understand the idea that it "doesn't exist." If URM's exist, then by definition so do ORM's.

Not necessarily - if the majority is A and the minority is B, then A is seen as a norm/baseline, meanwhile ORM would be if B is minority, there is some A and then more C (overrepresentation) than A+B. ... or at the very least my after-waking up brain thinks so 😅

Why do people say ORM’s have a harder time when there literally more ORMs than URMs
