It's interesting to see amphorae making a comeback. I know a lot of producers in Bourgogne and Bordeaux are experimenting or already using amphorae in aging their wines, but I don't think I've heard of any using them for vinification. Anything that gives winemakers options in making and blending their wines is a good thing and I'm glad more producers are turning away from heavy oak usage.

I am all for less oak in red wines (I’m oddly ok with it in whites 😎).

Loved this episode and of course added Laoudia to my shopping cart, since I can find it for around 38-40 Euros in Greece. Got to look for the rest of the wines as well.

Orange wine is what first got me interested in learning more about wines! I believe the first one I had was Vie de Romans (technically a Ramato) but the first Georgian Amber I had made in qvevri knocked my socks off - it reminded me so much of a sherry, it was really cool. I’ve also got to try a Sangiovese made in amphora, it was really good. I have a Saperavi in my cellar made in qvevri I’m still waiting to try, very excited.

Awesome vid. Still some obscure knowledge for a lot of wine drinkers. New avenues to explore is the name of the game in wine!

Also great reds in amphora - we had good example at David Reynaud, Domaine les Bruyères in Crozes Hermitage ;)

I did a Georgian wine tasting at my home home with friends. 8 White/orange and 4 reds. All qvevri. All somewhere between 14 and 22 Euro's. Price/quality/intriguing wise they were all great. If you live in Europe you have no excuse not to order some and try them out. Matthew, if I were to visit the Kakheti region in the near future for a holiday would I be able to communicate with the wine makers, locals and winebars? I have some basic Russian (yes, no, 3 beers please, etc.), but zero Georgian.

You forgot to mention Spain and the 'tinajas' used in Montilla wine. I'm thinking specifically of Perez Barquero.

In Oregon, there are a couple wineries playing with these. WinderLea has one and does a Pinot noir and Pinot blanc with theirs Beneath the tasting room. Teutonic has two of them and uses them quite a bit as well with their creative approach to “German” wines.

Beckham winery, in the chahalam mountains, makes all their wines with amphora. Andrew Beckham, I a potter and makes the amphora on site, he probably makes all the amphora used in Oregon

Love amphora wines generally if a winemaker has chosen to use them it's because they are passionate about making good stuff, Esencia rural Tinaja airen is a cheap amphora wine where the vessel is buried directly in the vineyard VERY volatile but a damn good time to drink
