It's challenging to remember each rank's name, what it looks like, and what to call someone. Here's a quick guide on what each rank means in the SAF. It's mostly lighthearted jokes, so don't take this video too seriously!

It's funny because a recruit who goes the OCS might think that one day their BMT sgts will have to salute them, but they don't realise that by the time they're commissioned as a 2LT their sgts will already have reached a higher rank: CIV.

Knowledge is knowing a 2LT can knock any encik down. Wisdom is knowing never to do that.

I learnt unarmed combat during my unit days in the late 80s. The unarmed combat instructors were all PTIs who were mostly corporals armed with UC black belt and they knocked everyone down - including Encik and officers - to do knuckles push up. 🤣 NB: In the 80s, corporal was the lowest specialist rank.

To correct you a bit, it's technically true that commissioned officers are higher ranked than warrant officers. However, for junior commissioned officers from 2LT to maybe CPT, they can't actually just "knock" an encik down like that. This is actually an unspoken military rule all over the world.

Actually when you are in command ranks, you don't just knock another commander down like that. Knock it down only happen during course. And trainers can knock trainees down regardless of rank. There was once a fresh 2LT knock all the specs down (3SG to 1SG) and he got called in to office by the OC. And good luck he made common enemies after that.

When I was in Civil Defence, they had various ranks and even Gurkhas attending EMT training. Ranks from PTE to 3SGT. That batch got knocked down by the EMT trainers. I can't remember if it was by the warrants or by NSF Sgts but I can see how even regular SGTs can be knocked down for making critical mistakes during training.

@@Ghakimx yup as you said, they were on "course" - the trainers will be of highest authority regardless the trainees' rank. When you are in operational unit every commanders are your left right friends/peers to help you along. The case i quoted above is a real example (ops unit), and the fresh OCS-ed post in NSF LT knock down all specs including experienced regulars infront of the entire company. OC would not have stepped in if he think it was ok.

That time I Recruit and got appointed as Bunk IC for 2 weeks as 3SG, then Private and 2SG and LCP and 1SG to go up and wake all the SOL soldiers all by myself.

As they say in the SAF, don't mess with the regulars even if you are a 2LT. Depending how foolish the NSF officer wants to be, the kopi talk could go from the OC to CO to Chief XXX officers to Chiefs of the Service to finally the CDF... Only one NSF in the whole history of SAF managed to get away relatively unscathed after a furious letter to all of the above mentioned senior leadership....

Unlike other major military countries, being in the military here is no pride and rarely get respect from the general population. In fact there are many who laugh at people who "signed on". And this is true even if you are a senior ranked officers. You can wear your crab or star in public and no one will give u a F at all. For Americans this is very different from your country where soldiers are held in high esteem. Its just a mentality thing cuz the government here forces youth to go for 2.5 years (at least during my time) service and most dislike it. And our generals here are garbage, many of them screw up once they retire to civil service and got 0 war experience anyway. If real war break out first to run will be them.

Nowadays rank change until I blur in 80 to millennium rec ,pte, and rare pte first class lcp ,corporal 3sg 2sg 1st sg ,staff sg master sg 2ndwarrant 1st warrant,master warrant, senior warrant. Nowadays first class pte sure have and come out out a first class coporal

Well, last I heard that supply cadets go through training and the supply and transport school, next, they did their on job training in their unit for 4 months, then they went to school of logistics and passed out as a 3SG. My friend told me about this as she went through it.

They are called Quartermaster. 1 will usually be tagged to per unit/school to facilitate logistics matters. Although they hold the rank of 3SG, they don't have anyone under their command.
