In college I took German and my teacher was an Austrian woman teaching the class as a part of her Master's program. Once when some of us got to class early we asked her if there was anything that surprised her about America, and she said she was surprised at how many pan handlers she saw. She said you don't see that in Germany and Austria, people standing on street corners begging for change. It's not that they don't have poverty, it's that it doesn't work. Nobody stands around begging for change because it's a waste of time, nobody gives them anything. It struck her as a testament to the generosity of people here that someone could actually reasonably expect to get free money from strangers just for asking.
@AlexieliosКүн бұрын
Well, I went to the US, and honestly I was choked by the number of people living in a tent in the street. Like it's normal. We do have some people like that in my country as well, but it is a minority. We have associations and people that try to help homeless people. We have the state providing a bit of money and we have free healthcare, even for homeless people. Way less people live under the poverty line in my country, in term of percentage.

@@michealdrake3421 I have been to New York, Boston, Charlotte, Buffalo, Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston, Dallas, and a bunch more cities. Without exception there was terrible poverty and homelessness in the city centers. Sure, there were definitely people helping them. Especially in the more evangelical states there were Christian organisations. But it pales in comparison to what is done in Europe to help homeless people out. In my country, the Netherlands, you’re genuinely only homeless after a million of extremely poor life decisions. In the USA you’re homeless if you’re a veteran with mild PTSD who broke a leg and couldn't afford the medical bill…
@user-bm4zi4pw6w51 минут бұрын
@@tsaoh5572not to come off as rude but your entire country is essentially the size of the city of Los Angeles. And it’s super homogeneous. You can’t compare a super diverse multi-state federalist system to your nation. Maybe compare the homeless rate of say the state of Pennsylvania to your own and you will find it’s quite comparable.

I came to America when I was 16. A student from a "welcoming committee" of my new school here took me to McDonalds. This was in the 1980s so coming from Eastern Europe I had no idea what McDonalds was supposed to be. OK, I thought. Back home, we also have something similar - meat pies: minced meat baked in dough. The dough is shaped and cooked all around the meat, instead of two separate pieces of bread under and over the hamburger; but I didn't think it was that different. I thought it was very strange - if someone had come to my home country and I was going to welcome them by taking them to a place to eat, I would not take them to a humble meat-pie shop. But this student seemed to act like it was a very important place. That was a strangest thing I remember from my very first days in America..

Have you ever been to Paris? Have you ever been to London? Have you ever been to Berlin? I have, their poverty and homeless situations are worse than ours. You go to Paris, Berlin, or London and walk around after dark you’re not gonna get shot you’re gonna get beaten with a hammer and stabbed with a knife, I guess that makes it OK, but you will still be dead. The majority of Europeans do not eat any healthier than Americans. And one last question for someone who is an expert like yourself why is our life expectancy so much longer than theirs?

As an American who hasn’t had McDonald’s since 2010 this is hilarious to me. Also, the only reason I remember THAT meal is that it was so unusual at the time for me to eat at McDonald’s anyway: it was a desperation meal at 2am because it was the only thing open on a tollway in Indiana; I was moving cross country and had forgotten to eat for over 24 hours with all the chaos of packing my apartment and obviously having an empty refrigerator. I would have preferred some nuts or cheese but the convenience store was closed (pay at pump only) so McDonald’s it was; it was barely edible and I only ate half of it despite being famished. I’m not an extremist about clean eating (I eat chips and things) but I really don’t understand McDonald’s.

American view of a German's day (sarc)... They wake up, put on their leiderhosen and drink a large mug of Lowenbrau beer while eating a bratwurst before getting in their electric car and heading to work at the local brewary or with the military, they break for lunch and have a large wiener schnitzle with pomfritz (sp?) while having another beer brought by a hefty woman with big melons, they return home after work to their wife Helga and eat sauerkraut while topping it off with more beer.
