If I remember correctly the reason they're called "Titans" is because Uranus (their father) called them the castrators which is "Tîtanès" in old Greek because they castrated their father.

My general understanding is the Titans are just the “Second Generation” of the Greek Gods with the second generation being crowned by Cronus taking the throne. The first generation was the Primordials ruling through Ouranos. The second generation is the Titans with Cronus as the ruler. The third (and then modern generation) was the Olympians ruled by Zeus. There's also Aphrodite who is never (at least to my knowledge) referred to as a titan despite her being the (half-?) sister to the titans in Hesiod's version of the myth. Note: I say "half" with a question mark because I'm not clear on whether she is only the titan's half-sister because she is not the daughter of Gaia or if she is considered their full sister because Ouranos is her sole progenitor.
@sonofcronos78312 жыл бұрын
Aphrodite is always referred as goddess. She is the daughter of Ouranos and Thalassa (who is a primordial who represents the Sea), but her circunstances of birth is not the usual one so that make her different. Titans are sons of Gaia and Ouranos and their descendents, everyone else have other titles and names
@chewiecheshire79732 жыл бұрын
@@sonofcronos7831 I have never heard that. I mean she was born in the sea, but I don't think that it counts as her mother. Also the video points out how titan is a very vague term that has no set parameters. I personally think it refers to any ruling god of the pre-olympian age, but that is just a guess based on what I know. But Aphrodite (at least to Hesiod) was born from the foam that was produced by the gentials thrown into the sea....this does bring up the question of whether the foam was produced from the sea or whether the genitals produced their own "foam". Also the Cyclopses and the Hecatoncheires are sons of Gaia and Ouranos but they aren't referred to as Titans.
@sonofcronos78312 жыл бұрын
@@chewiecheshire7973 yes, there is not any real meaning behind the names, but i believe that it is by parentage. Let me explain Sons of Gaia alone? Were the Oreads (Mountains), Driades (Threes) or Monsters (the giant Scorpion) Sons of Gaia with Pontus? Sea gods (like Phorcis and Thaumas) Sons of Gaia with Tartarus? Dragons (typhon, Campe and Daphne) Sons of Nyx and Erebus? Demons (Thanatos, Charon, Nemesis) Sons of Gaia and Ouranos? Titans Sons of Titans? Also titans, BUT, there is two exceptions. Sons of Okeanus and Themis? Potamoi (Rivers) and Nymphs Sons of Cronos and Rheia? Gods or Olympians. Their descendants? Also gods or Olympians. So Titans could be just the gods who ruled before? Yes, but i believe that the clear explanation is that what categorizes a Titan is that they are sons and daughters of Ouranos and Gaia only, and all their descendents are also titans (Helius, Leto, Hecate), but the exception is sons and daughters of Cronus and Rheia, and of Okeanus and Themis, who receives the names mentioned abovs.
@sonofcronos78312 жыл бұрын
@@chewiecheshire7973 and about Aphrodite and Thalassa the problem is that Primordials could be personified or not. So for example when they give the name Thalassa they are only meaning the Sea, not that she is the mother of Aphrodite in the traditional sense. So there is that.

You're thinking of the Titanomachy. The Gigantomachy was the gods' battle with the giants born from Uranus's blood after his castration by Cronus. Come to think of it, the association of titans with large size probably comes from people conflating the two wars with each other.

@minem99522 жыл бұрын
I don't have the answer BUT I have my own theory. You see, the Greek (and norse) mythology are amalgamations of the proto-indoropean people/religions and the religions of farmer people that originated from Anatolia with their own religion. As these two groups merged their religious ideas did aswell which lead to a fight of ideas and "gods" (referring to the Titanomachy and the fights of Venir and Æsir(?)). Where as the anatolian gods were more focused on nature and forces, the PIE gods were more based on human characteristics/inventions/ideals. So as the beliefs clashed and merged and adapted throughout time, the religious fights became mythology and the old gods (mainly the anatolian ones), which became less and less worshipped, gained the title of "Titan" to specify their rather old status in the religion. So basically they are the gods that came before the new ones (the olympians). Tho of course it's rather messy to show which of the old gods could stay as olympians, which would remain in the Titan category as gods who were less worshipped, and so on. I hope this helps to understand it a bit more, as I think this might be correct. You should watch Crecganford on that topic bc he talks a lot about religion and culture of ancient (especially Proto-Indoeuropeans) people and it might help form a better understanding abt the topic :) Have a great day

Later in at least Swedish mythology they became bigger and linked with Glacial erratic. One myth from Sweden(think it was Östergötland) is that a giant threw a bolder to hit a church but missed it.
