What's so awesome about this scene is that Joan Crawford had to parody herself to produce the voiceover that's supposed to be Jane speaking-- and she shows real comic flair. You can hear that she really hams it up-- talks in this absurdly sugary and phony-polite voice. This kind of tells me that Joan had a sense of humor; you have to have some self-awareness to do such a funny imitation of yourself. I know I'm getting way too analytical here...
@nikhilsukumar237 жыл бұрын
iCyclone perfectly explained you are an apt critic and modest

Joan was known to have a great sense of humor. It was much subtler though than Bette's bitchy humor.

@johnn.50336 жыл бұрын
No, I don't think you're being too analytical at all. That is the exact kind of introspectiveness that people need to have more of nowadays. It shows you put in an effort to at least see the human side of Joan rather than all the foolish post Mommie Dearest sycophants who love to rave against her just for the humor.

That happened in real life too among the two actresses. I think it was when Bette just released a picture(sorry I cannot remember the name) and was waiting for the critics and at the same day Joan announced the divorce to Douglas Fairbanks Jr.. so you can imagine that all the first pages were talking about the divorce of the Cinderella and the prince and Bette who was waiting the big shot with one of her first A pictures was furious...😂

Baby Jane was the victim of Blanche all along. From childhood she struggled along with her minimal talents to please her parents and provide for her family, under the jealous and vindictive watch of her mean little sister. She even makes sure to include her in getting ice cream, which goes entirely unappreciated. Then Blanche spends the rest of her petty, mean, and vindictive little life targeting and undermining her own flesh and blood, going so far as staging her own accident, so everyone can see what a 'victim' she is and driving her sister into addiction and madness by promoting vicious lies and rumors. What you don't see is how Jane's efforts to bring her family to Hollywood and getting her sister auditions and introductions led to her success. The truth can be told now!
@pipspiper6 жыл бұрын
The accident was not staged but a failed attempt to kill or injure Jane. Instead of Jane, Blanche was the one who went invalid.
@jmo50375 жыл бұрын
The ice cream, at least in the movie, appeared as sarcasm to get their father to yell at Blanche. Blanche got her sister work as an actress with a clause in her contract. Jane hadn't yet been accustomed to this shift in power and was bitter against Blanche which is what happened at the party. Blanche then tried to kill her and wanted to evade an attempt at murder by staging her own accident. Jane was already a heavy drinker by then because of her failures. Blanche didn't confess or get Jane psychological treatment in fear of her crime being discovered so your interpretation is wrong. Blanche was not a monster though Jane was a victim. Jane appears to be more talented than Blanche. Blanche made it because of her beauty and sophistication.
