A Japanese-speaking friend told me that Farfetchd was a reference to a proverb which translates to ‘sometimes a duck comes along carrying a leek’. Ducks are traditionally cooked with leaks, so if a duck comes along carrying one it’s just plain convenient. The meaning of the phrase is therefore roughly akin to ‘don’t look a gift horse in the mouth’ or ‘don’t question unlooked for good fortune’.
@nicholaslienandjaja181514 күн бұрын
Also, I'm pretty sure Ledian is based on both a ladybug and a gray alien.
@SentaiYamaneko12 күн бұрын
And that's why it's called Farfetch'd. Because such a fortunate occurrence actually happening would be very 'far fetched'.
@nicholaslienandjaja181512 күн бұрын
@@SentaiYamaneko It can also mean, "there's a sucker/fool born every minute", since the duck with the leek is basically telling the human, "Please kill and eat me".
@christiancinnabars140211 күн бұрын
@nicholaslienandjaja1815 Ledian's design is based off of the ever popular sentai fighting shows from Japan. Power Rangers was named in the video because it is the most popular show from that genre in the West, but Kamen Rider is extremely popular in Japan and literally is centered around bug themed superheroes. So the inspiration is very evident in that regard. Orbeetle is the ladybug that is designed around extraterrestrials moreso than Ledian.

That Pansage-Panpour-Pansear are based on this Japanese tale of 3 monkeys that see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil. Also a bit weird how there are just there Japanese words that can be translated (the bunny shaped apples for Victini, the burglar for Froakie, the clothes for Braixen).

Pidgey is based on a Tree Sparrow, and Spearow is a Sparrowhawk. Paras/Parasect are cordyceps infected cicadas. Pretty sure Dewgong is also based on dugong (manatee)....as the name would suggest. I think Lickitung is also VERY loosely based on giant anteater. Koffing/Weezing also based on volcanic gas vents. Jynx is based on the yokai Yuki-onna. Magikarp/Gyarados also based on the legend of a koi swimming up a mountain to become a dragon...and possibly Japanese windsocks. Hoothoot additionally based on a clock. Spinerak is specifically a Happy Face Spider. Sudowoodo likely also loosely based on Walking Stick insects. Entire Hoppip line based on dandelion from leaves to flower to seed puffs. Espeon based on the yokai Nekomata. Murkrow also based on witch's hat and broom. Pineco is a bagworm. Qwilfish also based on marine mines. Shuckle is most likely based on the macro view of brewer's yeast, as well as a turtle, wine amphora, and slime mold. Donphan also based on a tire.

Things that are the same inspiration you could put them together, example: “pokemon a b and c are inspired by ____”. You could also instead of reading it off as if it were a bullet point system you could read them off as a full sentence, example “Ekans are based off of the Indian cobras, kakunas are based off literal cocoons” it fleshes out the content a little more.
