I am German, working in Paris since 2017 and the biggest difference is that Germans love to talk about how hard they work while leaving the office at 6pm and French talk about their amazing work life balance while sending out emails at 8pm. And no, we do not drink sparkling orange juice, but we love sparkling apple juice ...

I am French, Breton - when you say sparkling apple juice, you mean CIDER I guess ;-) (joke) Otherwise I do not think we are so different each others. I am working with so many EU nationalities now, and I can tell we are all the same. Of course we have all some specificity, but they are kind of minor to me, because I can tell as a Breton, I am probably closer to an Irish dude than a person leaving from the South of France - By that, I mean even in France, we are quite different already. Diversity is good, but I think we are clearly not that different after all. That's why I feel European I think :)

Never seen sparkling orange juice nor sparkling apple juice. Schorle is not juice, it's a juice mixed with soda. The first time I drank sparkling ice tea (actually sparkling, not a mixed beverage) was in Hungary some decades back and while I wasn't too fond of it back then as a child I'm glad it found its way to Germany. Une boisson nostalgique.

@@pami333 Ice tea is an artificial drink, so the way they make that sparkling, by adding carbohydrate, is on the same level as producing Apfelschorle (that you can buy readily mixed in a bottle, like the Lift one). And I am happy that it is not the juice itself because it would mean it has gone bad.

I am from Germany. In my opinion the main difference is pride. The french are very proud (about their language, their food, the culture) - sometimes even a little closed minded because of it or even a little arrogant about it 😉. The germans arent that much (guess why) but still are hurt when the french speak bad about their cuisine or something (guess thats normal). Also the germans actually like french culture a lot (a saying is "like god in france" meaning 'living the good life') i am not too sure if the love is shared the other way around 😜. Also i think that french and germans are not too different tbh. Both people seem a little unfriendly first but have a big heart (i mean the french and german have the same acestors and even forefather in Charlemagne/ Karl der große.), they both love/ care for nature, literature and social causes a lot. In my personal opinion the french are extremely nice people and very friendly. I absolutely can not confirm the cliché about them. Oh and i think in both countries there is an understanding of both of our countries being the motor of the EU. I just wish we would get closer together (more exchanges in school, universities etc) after all we kinda are the same people.

Welcome to the 21st century, the Raj is gone, Germany is on friendly terms with all its neighbours, especially France, and has no contested borders. Why is France so pro German involvement in the EU? Have you ever heard about the contract that was struck between the two Germanies and the occupying powers to enable German reunification (2+4 contract)? France's condition for accepting a reunited Germany was that Germany would integrate itself even more into the EU. France demanded the introduction of an European currency, the creation of an European military etc. as a precondition to permit our reunification. So why on earth would they have anything against us keepin our word and fullfilling our obligations towards them? France wants an United States of Europe and made it the condition for German unification. That's why we are on board with that and that's also why we are both working together towards that goal.

I used to have a pretty bad image of Germany from being cursed at several times by Germans just for being French at the border. I went to Heidelberg a bit worried that I was going to be treated the same way, so I told my family to lay low and not speak French too loud in the streets. Not in the slightest! The people I met in Heidelberg were just the loveliest, friendliest people I have ever met, everyone was so kind and happy, far from the stereotypes. Even though we tried to speak German with them, upon hearing us speak French, every single person tried to converse with us in our language. I felt so welcome there, it was amazing!

The only negative stereotypes I hear is that the French tend to get unfriendly when people try to converse in English and that they don't like Germans. 😄 which is a sad thing cause we should really leave the past behind us at some point.

It's a linguistic thing: german has a more complex syllable structure than french so it needs more time to form the words what makes us slower - but it doesn't mean faster languages automatically transport more informations within the same time :)

I'm Mexican and I have been to France and Germany many times because my cousin married a French guy and I had a German girlfriend for many years. I think cliches do exist but they disappear as easily as they appear. I found Germans a bit more aloof than French but I attended several meetings and big family parties in Hannover and in a little town some kilometres away. People were very jolly and open. As soon as an "uncle” knew I was Mexican, he wanted to drink tequila shots with me. I felt warmly welcome by him and the rest of the family. In France, especially in Paris, I've never met anyone unfriendly to me, even though many people say Parisians are rude. I've found French and Germans to have many things in common with Mexicans, incredible and it may seem, but some other things are perfectly distinct, like the French playing accordion and singing in Place d'Italie on Sunday or Germans not crossing the street if a green ampelman doesn't tell them to do so.

Je suis français, ayant vécu 4 ans en Allemagne, à Francfort-sur-le-Main et je peux vous dire que j'ai su déconstruire tout les stéréotypes connus. Je ne sais pas si c'est lié à Francfort, qui est une ville pas forcément représentative de l'Allemagne. Je trouve l'Allemagne beaucoup plus multiculturelle et "ouverte" aux cultures et tolérante vis-à-vis des personnes ne parlant pas leur langue. Les allemands ne sont pas plus ponctuels, ordonnés ou propres, par contre ils sont davantage respectueux des piétons et des cyclistes. Je trouve l'organisation bureaucratique plus ou moins à égalité entre les deux pays. Les Allemands tendent à être plus directs (ils disent les choses clairement, sans tourner autour du pot) et plus pragmatiques (au quotidien et dans la langue, l'allemand n'a pas la même finesse du détail à la française). Les allemands râlent comme les français, mais moins officiellement et ouvertement. Ils n'ont pas la culture de la manifestation et de la protestation qu'ont les français. Je trouve que les allemands et les personnes vivant en Allemagne savent profiter de la vie tout aussi bien que les français, les terrasses d'Eiscafé et les parcs ne désemplissent pas aux beaux jours. L'éducation allemande est moins stricte et bien plus basée sur la confiance et la valorisation des enfants. Les enfants allemands sont autonomes plus jeunes qu'en France. De manière générale je trouvais les relations plus apaisées. Il est très rare d'assister à des scènes de dispute dans la rue. Le climat politique et social tendu reste davantage palpable en France qu'en Allemagne. Il est plus difficile de briser la glace en Allemagne car ils tiennent à maintenir une certaine distance sociale et de manière générale quand on ne les connait pas, ils tendent à être froid alors que les français (du sud particulièrement) sont bien plus bavards et n'ont pas de soucis pour le smalltalk, même sans connaître la personne.

l'Allemagne plus multiculturelle ?? Euh tu venais d'où en France ? Moi j'ai grandi en banlieue parisienne et j'ai jamais vu de région en Allemagne avec un tel mélange. D'ailleurs, il suffit de regarder l'équipe de foot allemande : il leur fallu 20 ou 30 ans de plus que la France pour commencer à intégrer des joueurs d'origine étrangère. Pour le reste aussi, moyen d'accord. En plus ma mère est allemande donc j'ai eu l'occasion de comparer souvent. Il suffit de voir la tête des Allemands quand tu traverses au rouge pour voir que si, ils sont plus respectueux des règles, c'est pas un mythe. D'accord avec toi pour les relations sociales en revanche. Ils ont une culture de la négociation et du compromis plutôt que de manifester et faire la grève tous les 4 matins.

La France a toujours refuser le multiculturalisme(et pour moi c'est une qualité), elle s'est évertuée à le détruire depuis toujours (Édit de Villers-Coteray qui impose le français comme seul langue, fin 19ème-début 20ème siècle où parler la langue régionale est interdit dans les écoles...). Et même encore aujourd'hui le multiculturalisme n'est pas toléré en France(lois sur l'Exception Culturelle qui imposent 40 % minimum de musiques/film/programmes télé en français, refus des tentatives de certains musulmans de se soustraire à leur devoir de respecter et suivre la laïcité...).

We had a French-German student exchange in 8th grade high school (Gymnasium). 2 weeks in each country. It was one party, very fun the whole time and one celebration and a permanent smooching. The young generation of both countries had no fear of contact and no historical ballast to carry around. This is how it should be with all peoples in Europe and in the whole world. À ta santé ! Very interesting! The sex story is really funny 😄 wasn’t expecting that. As an Indian who traveled around Europe and encountered both Germans and French. I found both equally friendly but I feel Germans are more nicer and friendlier to me than French people. I find French guys are more talkative and show more emotions than German guys but surprisingly i found French girls more uptight and hard to chat with than the German girls. I met many German girls who were so nice to me and were very kind enough to show me around the towns in Germany and Austria. Maybe it’s the language barrier or maybe French girls aren’t used to interacting with Indians. But it doesn’t mean French people aren’t any less than Germans. Just my opinion. Please do more videos like this. Compare French with Spanish people or Italian people or more. Would love to hear people’s thoughts and opinions. 👍🏾😊

From my personal experience, I've always found French people much easier to talk to, but I think it depends on where you come from as you pointed out. I'm Brazilian myself and Germans generally have a very negative thought about us, whereas the French mostly don't (at least I haven't seen any). Indians might have an easier time with Germans since there are many of you guys here (I live in Germany too) contributing to the IT sector and I've personally never heard of anything negative caused by Indians.

@@Shankar-Bhaskar there's no one better than a German him/herself to answer your question, but based on my observations it's 2 things: 1. Macho culture and 2. Politics. Most people I come across here immediately assume I relate myself with both when I answer to the question "where are you from?" - expect that to always be the 1st or 2nd question asked by a German and then all the stereotypes will come against you. If you're American they're gonna think you're racist and voted for Trump; if you're Brazilian they (especially women) are gonna think you're talking to them because you're sexually interested in them; if you're English they're gonna think you're supportive of Brexit; if you're French they're gonna think you hate speaking English and so on. I've met people from everywhere and never have I seen such jugmental behaviour as I do here.

Gustavo Vieira That’s surprising considering Brazil has such a positive image around the world thanks to football, carnival, beautiful beaches, relaxed lifestyle, bossa nova and Gisele Bündchen!! Gisele Bundchen is a Brazilian with German ancestry and this should win more brownie points in Germany. 😀 India has pretty negative image in Germany thanks to poverty, overpopulation and different culture. I interacted with many people from different European countries including the Germans and French people and most of them are quite ignorant about India. I guess ignorance comes with negative views. But nonetheless the people I have met in Europe were very friendly and respectful to me and am glad to have visited and traveled around Europe.

The macho, misogynistic thing is a staple of Indian culture, and so is right wing, Hindu nationalism and social inequality and poverty. I expect Germans to have a much more negative view of India than Brazil and Brazilians; at least Brazil is a Latin, western country which treats women slightly better than Indian culture.

Une fois, je suis allée en Allemagne avec les autres élèves du cours d'allemand pour une sorte de stage (le projet Praxis). On y allait en train et il fallait changer de gare à Paris. La prof d'allemand m'accompagnait car j'étais en fauteuil, elle a demandé à des gens de nous aider et ils nous ont envoyées balader. Alors que quand je suis partie en voyage en Bavière avec ma mère et mon frère, on est allés à un musée à Nuremberg et un homme à l'entrée a vu que j'étais en fauteuil et il nous a tout de suite conduit à monte-charge. Les rues ne sont peut-être pas adaptées (c'est quand même une cité médiévale) mais au moins, les gens aident volontiers les autres et ils sont respectueux.

Ayant vécu longtemps en Allemagne et en France, j’ai trouvé cette vidéo très intéressante. Je suis assez d’accord sur certains points comme le fait que les Allemands sont plus organisés puisque le manque d’organisation en France, (pour par exemple des inscriptions dans des établissements scolaires, l’assurance, des organisations d’évènements...) m’avait vraiment un peu choquée quand j’étais arrivée ici, personne n’avait l’air au courant de comment tout fonctionnait, même les personnes du domaine en question. Mais au contraire de ce que disent certains, je trouve que justement, les français sont beaucoup plus strictes et donnent plus d’importance aux règles. J’ai l’impression qu’on donne plus de liberté aux gens en Allemagne parce qu’on reconnaît que tout le monde connaît les limites (comme disait la dame pour la vitesse). Quelqu’un d’autre l’a déjà dit aussi mais j’étais aussi un peu déçue par la hiérarchisation en France. J’aimais vraiment beaucoup le fait que les rapports avec les professeurs par exemple soient tellement plus détendus. Pareil pour le système éducatif d’ailleurs, arrivée en France, tout était plus stricte et le rythme beaucoup plus intense, je ressentais tout de suite nettement plus de pression. Autre chose qui m’a étonné dans la vidéo est le fait que les allemands étaient décrits comme froids aux premiers abords. Pour moi c’était encore une fois l’inverse, même si j’ai vite remarqué que les deux étaient très gentils et ouverts, j’avais toujours l’impression au premier contact que les français étaient un peu plus distants et en général un peu moins ouverts d’esprit et avenants. Ce qui m’a marqué surtout c’est (comme évoqué dans la vidéo également) l’individualisme des français, qui contrastait vraiment le sentiment de communauté que j’avais en Allemagne. J’avais passé beaucoup de temps là-bas à des événements où énormément de personnes qui ne se connaissaient pas forcément se réunissaient pour passer du temps ensemble et créer des liens et je ne retrouve pas vraiment ça ici, c’est un peu comme si tout le monde faisait juste ça de son côté avec ceux qu’ils connaîssaient déjà. Pour la nourriture en revanche je trouve que trop d’importance est donnée à ce point. Avant de déménager j’appréhendais beaucoup à partir de ce que j’avais entendu de la France. Mais sauf peut-être les spécialités de chaque pays, ce qui est consommé au quotidien est vraiment presque identique d’après mon expérience. Même le petit déjeuner, je pense que c’est plus subjectif que propre au pays, je connais autant d’allemands que français qui mangent salé le matin. Bref ce que j’ai dit sonnait peut-être un peu comme si je crachais sur les français, c’est pas le cas, j’aime beaucoup les deux et suis d’accord avec ce que j’ai beaucoup vu dans les commentaires, c’est-à-dire qu’hormis quelques points, en fait ils se ressemblent énormément, ont forcément des côtés négatifs tous les deux mais sont en général des pays et personnes très agréables qui gagneraient à se rapprocher.

Au moins elle a le mérite de montrer que les différences entre Français et Allemands, souvent prônées des 2 côtés, sont en réalité toutes relatives et, à mon goût, un peu surfaites. On est plus proches qu'on ne le croit ou qu'on ne veut bien le croire. Cultures germanique et latine sont des catégories qui ont l'avantage de rassurer mais l'inconvénient de diviser. Et qui sont de moins en moins pertinentes. N'oublions pas qu'on vit dans une société de plus en plus globalisée...

Du coup on peut dire aussi que les italiens, les espagnols et les portugais sont aussi nos cousins. Pour les anglais , c’est le contraire de nous : leur père était Franco-normand mais leur mère était saxonne donc c’est pour cela qu’ils parlent une langue germanique : mais du coup nous sommes doublement cousins avec eux non?

As a German, I agree with almost all of these stereotypes :D I like the French for being less organised and passionate about everything they do. Every French person I've met so far has been super nice and polite. As a teacher, I think the French school system could be reformed, not because education is bad, but because learning methods seem really strict. The hierarchy is also something that I can't quite get used to. We don't exactly call our professors by their first name over here but titles seem to be much more important in France. Overall, we know that you have better wine, better food and a language that is more pleasing to the ear :))

France has been organized by Napoleon and Charles de Gaulle, so basically two military men. So the country is heavily hierarchical. Not only in school, everywhere. I guess that may be an explanation why French people like to take some freedom with the rules sometimes because otherwise it becomes suffocating.
