Cooper was quite the elegant dresser as well. All his suits were custom made on "the row" for him in London. He was truly something else. Died way too young, I remember it well, it was such a shock. People were dying of lung cancer left and right back in the day. I remember many of my doctors smoking in the exam room back in the 50's and 60's. Yep. Thanks, that was a good one James! From a vintage gal who appreciates you.

Yes, James you understand it and deliver it very well. Strength is to do things quietly. I have always did the right things without showing off and seeking validation, acreditation. Being noble in silence! That is why nowadays masculinity in the proper form lost value for the new generation. They do not know it and even are introduced to all principles, code still do not realize it neither trying to do so.

I am already strong/silent type, and it does not do justice or serve oneself well. Always trying to break out of it, become more vocal/sociable instead of silent & ignored (or feared). Strong/Silent types miss out social opportunities, suffer for it, and also stir up paranoia in people he comes across, and are more likely to get pestered with false allegations. Don't push or lock anyone in that pigeon-hole category. We all must have moderation and be sensible to live full lives well, and let others know we are alright.

As a Christian, Sergeant York, the real life Alvin York is a hero to me. The movie sergeant York is an absolute classic, and is one of the only movies I actually own. I really like old films because they are usually uplifting and tell a story that is worth applying to your life. Many actors of this time were very talented and get overlooked in the modern day. Gary Cooper, John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, Cary Grant, and others all both on and off the screen are for the most part masculine role models that young men could look up to and try and emulate. I appreciate you covering more classic films and actors.

All of these are fictional characters. Don't get me wrong, having a fictional character as your role model is a good idea, fictional characters are often ideal embodiments of virtues and there is a giant gamut to pick from. Bit these are characters Gary Cooper played. He played them well, arguably he pit some of himself in each of them, but these characters were not him. The lessons of his characters can't really be equated to the actor himself. Particularly since during his career, Hollywood was run by the "studio system", in which actors didn't get to choose their roles, they signed on to a studio and then the studio created their roles and public image. And the studios tightly controlled both of these.

What about his role in the Fountainhead? Though not a great movie, it has to be one of his “good “ masculine roles. Physically and mentally powerful, and willing to go all in on his principles. Again, not a movie ranking with the others, but a very, very masculine role.

@ Much of the dialog is stilted because it came right from Rand’s book. You don’t need to be a Rand fan to get the message. Skim for the imagery, e.g., presentation to the builders that demand compromise and he will not, Cooper working in the quarry, his interactions with Raymond Massey, and his monologue in his court trial. His view from the top of the tall building at the end of the movie that he can finally build his way says that strong men (not politically strong men) can shape a better future and are very necessary. From ChatGPT Roark’s willingness to stand against societal norms and the expectations of his peers showcases moral courage. He faces ridicule and rejection but never allows external pressures to define his identity or actions. In The Fountainhead, positive masculinity is depicted not as a tool for dominance but as a means of self-expression and contribution. Roark’s character challenges traditional notions of masculinity by rooting his strength in principles, creativity, and respect for individual freedom.

You picked a great example, but I don’t think he portrayed common, everyday men… they all seemed extraordinary… Lou Gehrig …. Alvin York…. Will Caine…. even Frank Lloyd Wright…. all were tested to the greatest of standards and suffered such tragedy, and yet were able to thrive , and it seems to me that their success was quite likely a product of THEIR time… when there was a noted difference in gender roles and thank God for those days…. You are correct I think to pick from that era as well, and there is no better example
