The Touhou Project's unique use of fantasy elements in its worldbuilding are a large part of what has made the series so popular. In this video essay, I frame these elements using J. R. R. Tolkien's insights on Fantasy; and by extension- Fairy Stories. A conclusion to my series on what defines Gensokyo's fantasy.
While Touhou fans can enjoy a large variety of Touhou Fanworks, Official and Fan Games, and even Touhou Lore, there is the question of what makes these so captivating to so many people. In this video, I explain how the series builds a living world like that portrayed in publications such as The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion.
