To be honest, I think it is important to properly establish such boundaries. I am not aware of any fallout, but I still watched the video. After watching I see the importance of establishing such boundaries. It helps to refine the types of people in your audience as well. That is not to say there are not great and awesome people out there working with custom stuff. However, those who are not good people in this sort of hobby are found in that niche. I make Batman cowls. It is fan art. When one is done... I post it. If it sells I make another. I will rotate my casting designs. You get folks that take pre-orders for 500 cowls. Then something happens and people do not get the 300 dollar mask they paid for. It sucks. Those grey areas suck. That is why I do not do it. I make what I can. If it sells I make one to have for my display. It continues that way. Also, my stuff has no logo. It is Darkest Knight or Bat-Dude. It ain't Batman. Batman? At any rate guys like me know that our stuff is not usually going to go next to licensed collectibles. Our stuff is found deep in the storage trunks of cosplayers, or nerdy college kids display stands trying to convince their girlfriends they are Batman.

My 2 cents for what it's worth: While I understand the reasons both professional & personal behind the policy, and do share a lot of the sentiments behind it, I also believe the whole "zero tolerance" approach on customs in the BSC & Secret Sanctuary FB Groups comes off as a little TOO strict & maybe even more than a little hypocritical. Heck, these days we all see Delaney videoing every Rogues Gallery show with a custom right behind him. If you were to post a screen capture of that image in either one of your groups, by the letter of your law it'd get deleted. Anybody see a problem with this? I believe practical minds can come to an agreement that there's a marked difference between being able to share/show a display of statues in a group picture or video of one's own personal collection in a room tour, (without highlighting certain pieces or ever mentioning the origins of them), as opposed to singularly focusing on or highlighting the custom pieces seen within. I'm of the opinion that a softening of this hardline stance would be beneficial, and should be permitted at moderator's discretion, of course. Additionally if a post is deleted, then the remover should demonstrate some common courtesy by contacting the poster via PM and explaining WHY the picture was taken down. 'Cause as the rules stand now, some of us will never be able to share with our fellow friends & collectors in these groups the fullness of our personal collections we've spent decades curating in this hobby. And that's a shame...
@samuelharris1006Күн бұрын
Totally get your reasons and the nature of your channel and the broader business. I accidentally posted a repaint in the group and got a warning. Totally appreciate that the rules are there, I just joined a long time ago. I think an unfortunate by product of not allowing people to share their home made customs on the group is it kind of creates a two tier group. Those who can afford and those who can’t.

I believe custom statues are technical violations of copyright laws. So, what about the art that Finch does for BSC or other collectors who commission these things. Well, they are likely also copyright violations. But as I understand it, publishers tend to overlook the sale of sketches and commissions featuring their characters. It's so-called fan art and I believe the industry views it as accepted practice. I think publishers view it as extending the popularity of the brand and character. The publishers also tend to have or might have in the future relationships with these artists, and perhaps given them outright authorization to do private commissions. Of course, outside of the private commission being paid, the art cannot be published for a profit and should only be for personal enjoyment of the buyer. However, I think it is completely different for somebody to hire a sculptor and engage a factory to design and manufacture so-called custom statues, even when done in quantities of under 100. That goes beyond the fan art concept.
@spinnerrackstudiosКүн бұрын
@@stationarywanderer7910 I never said that companies approve of it, I said they overlook it. There is a difference. But I do agree with you that there is an element of practicality involved in that it is impossible to chase down every person doing a sketch. And as I said, there is an element of fan art promoting the character and brand. But the primary point to my post is there is a big difference between Finch (an artist who works for DC and perhaps even has express authorization from DC to do commissions) versus Joe Blow who has never had any relationship with DC and decides he is going to hire a sculptor to render a DC character, 3D print it, send it off to a third-party factory in China to produce many copies, ship it back to the U.S. and other parts of the world and then distribute it to collectors, all for a pretty penny.

During the early years of statue collecting at its infancy around after year 2000, there have been custom statues produced by unlicensed small companies around the world. And some did receive the cease and desist notice on certain pieces they produced from DC and Marvel. With the advancement of 3D and art technology, nowadays anyone with the calibre can produce a statue on their own and even sell it. Who knows their custom statues could have come from the same factory as those licensed products sold by licensed companies. As consumers, they have a choice of owning one or not. But it is another thing to promote or publicize unlicensed products openly even in channels. You do not want to popularize it before appropriate action is taken by the license holder.
