The Wright Brothers needed a lightweight engine to power their first flight. Several innovations in the late 1800s came together to give them the answer.

Look for Ellehammer. You might get a surprise there. 😁 The only reason why it was not recognised, was that there were too few withneses.

One of the important the brother's had is the understanding of coefficient of airfoils, that now gave us a better insight of how wing's can generate lift, they are truly the first aircrafts engineer who succeed in a successful flights without doctoral degree in aironautics, and they are just bicycle mechanics. Wow, but now all gov't of the world require any one to become doctorate degree to become successfully employed, Oh! what a heck, doc's plung their ideas

12 hp, 201 cid. That is .059 hp per cid. And people today think modern gas engines pollute and inefficient. Lol

This video is plain wrong and I'm surprised a University would publish it. Gustave Whitehead from Bridgeport Connecticut was First In Flight in 1901 in front of 10+ eyewitnesses and a newspaper reporter who filed affidavits about this. Shame on the University of Dayton.

what got their airplanes (actually they were just gliders) where catapults! According to Wikipedia: "In 1906, the Brazilian Alberto Santos-Dumont made what was claimed to be the first airplane flight unassisted by catapult[25] and set the first world record recognized by the Aéro-Club de France by flying 220 meters (720 ft) in less than 22 seconds.[26] This flight was also certified by the FAI.[27][28]" An airplane unable to take off by itself is a motorized glider not an airplane. Sorry, Wright Brothers ...

you must not know what a catapult is. they used a falling weight to accelerate the plane up to takeoff velocity quickly, but it was not required for takeoff and obviously it flew fine and for long durations under power, meaning it was not a glider. Sorry, Battletech Fanatic ...

An uncontrolled hop is not an airplane.

Battletech Fanatic According to Wikipedia: "In 1906, the Brazilian Alberto Santos-Dumont made what was claimed to be the first airplane flight unassisted by catapult[25] and set the first world record recognized by the Aéro-Club de France by flying 220 meters (720 ft) in less than 22 seconds.[26] This flight was also certified by the FAI.[27][28]" This was because they had not witnessed the much longer and much earlier flights being reported by the Wright Brothers. However, the Aero-Club de France and the FAI reversed their decisions in 1908 after they witnessed the flights of Wilbur Wright that August, who demonstrated the vast superiority of his Wright III Flyer airplane which was designed in 1905. Although their 1905 plane was damaged in the spring of 1908, two more Wright III Flyers were built that summer, almost identical to the 1905 plane.
