My biggest takeaway from this is that simplicity is key to healthy hair. I definitely agree that the "natural community" has been sold and fed a bunch of garbage advice and products and our current beliefs about hair and beauty keep us in a box. My hair is at its healthiest, longest, and fullest now than it's ever been. Yet my hair routine, is very simplistic with quality shampoo, conditioner, heat protection for blowouts. Once I focused on scalp health, regular trims, and keeping my hair stretched, my hair started to flourish. We can really make it harder for ourselves.

I just finished watching and I must say that I am beyond thankful I’m watching this at 20. For the past 3-4 years I have been going natural (I would straighten my hair maybe 2-3 times a year) but every time I would get it straightened I would find myself having growth, but would have to get 1-2 inches cut every time and just two days ago I had to get a cut that was needed because I had a cone hole within my shaft which led me to your channel in the first place. This really opened my eyes and then I looked in my bathroom and saw all of these products that I have bought and it’s ridiculous.. the amount of money I’ve spent on product to better define and hold my curls is crazy. Meanwhile my mom doesn’t ever wear her hair naturally curly and her hair has never broken off and it’s so long. I cannot believe I have been influenced so much to the point where I was thinking heat was the worst thing in the world. I may have to treat wearing my hair curly as like a one day thing for a special day instead or doing the flexi rods instead. Thank you so much for taking the time to sit down and help us all out. I love your content and you are a life saver🫶🏽💕

Okay, I now understand your POV as a professional cosmetologist. I agree. With curly/coily hair (due to its structure) twist-outs and wash-n-gos cause more mechanical damage than heat used in the right way or hair sectioned and set/stretched using rods/rollers to stretch the hair. Keeping curly/coily hair stretched is the optimal way to retain length and keep it healthy. As my "natural" hair has become longer, I stopped doing 2 strand twists and small plaits and braids because of tangles. I began to realize that keeping my natural hair stretched has made my hair easier to manage and retain length.

Less than a week I have been watching cut my dreadlocks about two weeks ago rarely washed just wore wigs and cut them. Since cutting them this time wore one wash & go and came across your videos right now I am wearing a perm rod set using Paul Mitchell shampoo/conditioner. Had to buy a hair brush, a blow dryer, flat iron/curling rod, non comdegenic almond oil, thermal heat protection etc.. Washed my hair last night blow dried, flat ironed then rolled with pink perm rods. I wore my natural hair out this morning & now watching more of your videos. Love you so much🙏😍🙌

Ive always preferred blow drying and my hair was long with it anyway with no damage. I'm African and your advice makes sense. If you look at ancient west African hair styles we always wore braids or stretched hair. We never wore our curls and coils out and even our afros were stretched out. Also our routine was simply wash condition moisturise put in braids or a stretched hairstyle for some weeks then repeat. Once blow dryers were invented it made our braid styling process easier. Wash n go's are for mixed race people.

I love the look of West African rubber thread hairstyles. I know many despise them as old-school / from the past 😅but the way my life is set up I only want hairstyles that can be done in under 1 hour and I can take out myself in 15 to 20 minutes. If I could get some rubber thread I would wear those hairstyles for the rest of my life.

Question from your response, so mixed race people with curly hair should follow this method or the wash n gos?
@jaybeey7239
@jaybeey7239 2 ай бұрын
@minnitreez333 I guess it depends on your texture. I know mixed race people whose hair is more to the black side. I'm guessing those people would benefit from what cyn is saying. I think she said if you can't comb through your hair in it's natural state then it should be stretched. So sounds like if you can comb through your wash and go with no breakage you should be good.

Growing up, anytime my mom, grandma, or Aunt did my hair they simply washed, conditioned, and blow dried my hair. Then styled. My hair was done every two weeks unless I had braids. And my braids would be in no longer than one month. That’s it. My hair was down my back, thick and shiny. When I went to the salon my hair flourished with silk presses. I only experienced breakage and damage when I started doing my own hair incorrectly. Flat ironing my hair incorrectly, like flat ironing it dirty and EVERYDAY. And detangling my hair improperly. I had the hardest time detangling after wearing wash n gos and wet styles. I’ve had the best length retention with stretched hair done properly. 🤷🏾‍♀️

I've learned the hard way over many years that wet styling does not suit my hair because beside tangles which lead to breakage, it compromises the integrity of my hair shafts over time. Even Shelly V said on a recent video that she knows it's far easier to retain length by wearing her hair straight consistently than to keep it curly. I can absolutely see the aesthetic appeal of wash n gos and twist outs but for me, it is yet another beautiful style which is not compatible with long-term healthy hair care.

Hi Cyn, I absolutely love your content! I even purchased your ebook on high porosity hair. You are spreading such much needed knowledge for hair care with so much passion and dedication! I stumbled across your videos earlier this year and I've been watching them ever since, going to your channel and looking for older videos on various topics I was looking for such as your take on henna, fenugreek, aloe, rice water, oiling the scalp, the LOC method, using essential oils like rosemary, peppermint, plaiting hair on wet hair instead of dry hair, detangling hair wet with conditioner on, and so many other practices highly recommended by the team natural youtubers. I was so amazed that you had addressed them all in your videos and that you had at least 1 video for every topic. So much content and knowledge put into these videos! I was also shocked by the revelations! FOR ABOUT 12 YEARS I WAS FOLLOWING THOSE TEAM NATURAL KZbinRS AS I DIDN'T KNOW ANY BETTER. I was following those team natural youtubers and I am guilty of having tried all of those practices at some point but I've been unlearning everything thanks to your channel and I've stopped all of them progressively as I didn't see any improvement in the overall condition and length of my hair throughout all these years. MY HAIR HAS REMAINED AT THE SAME LENGTH (ARM-PIT) AND SAME TEXTURE AND VOLUME BUT IT FEELS DRY MOST OF THE TIME. It has not been severely damaged but it has not improved either. I think that what saved my hair from completely falling apart is the fact that I was very consistent with my shampoo and professional trimming throughout all these years. I always shampooed every 2 to 3 weeks regardless of the hairstyle I had ( weave, wig, cornrows, box braids, braid out, twists out, crochet braid....) and I always had a professional trim on blow dried and flat ironed hair every 2 months. I'm going to keep on following your advice as I want my hair to get healthier and longer. SINCE I'VE STARTED APPLYING YOUR TIPS A FEW MONTHS AGO MY SCALP ITCHING HAS REDUCED DRASTICALLY AND IT IS GETTING BETTER AND BETTER. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL THE EDUCATIONAL WORK YOU DO THROUGH YOUR CHANNEL. IT IS SO MUCH NEEDED!! NEVER STOP REGARDLESS OF WHAT THE IGNORANT HATERS SAY. THEY JUST DON'T KNOW ANY BETTER. Following you all the way from South Africa.

Discovered you because of this video appearing on my feed today and I already know it's definitely not by chance! Been feeling in my soul that I wanted to start using heat again and stretching my hair, not doing all and everything that curlygirlworld wants us to. (where I live it's winter now so that's part of the reason as well) . I use heat minimally, been doing so for the past 10 years. Recently blowdried (with a heatbrush) after yearssss. I've always had thick hair, that has changed the last couple of years but I blamed my aging, hormones and what not. But the truth is... I was a bit shocked to see what's left now. THIS ALL makes so much sense. I have an appointment to trim my hair next month and after that.... things are going to change around here. This video (actually another one but this was the second one I watched) confirmed my gut feeling. What would you recommend as basic steps for people to 'start over'? Besides using heat and minimal products? (I haven't watched your other video's yet). THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR TRUTH AND KNOWLEDGE!

I never knew you this? It makes so much sense. When I kept up my hair in the salon every two weeks. Then a press. My hair grew so long. And I never used oils on my scalp. When I started my loc journey. I seen the hair stylist once a month. No oils on my scalp my hair grew like crazy. However, When I cut my Locs and went natural for 3 year! And I did have a lot of trauma happen to me during that time. Loss my child and mom and father in law. My hair literally came out in chunks. Went to a doctor they said I had stress alpaca. ( I had never heard of that) now, my hair sheds a lot and so much other stuff. Smh 🤦🏾‍♀️ But I’m here to learn and do.

I just got done having 2 small bald spots on the side of my head i knew it was from inflammation but couldnt figure out what it was. I realized it was the foods i was eating creating an overgrowth of yeast as well as tension and the way i was applying my products. Since the front of my hair is the driest I'd always add tons of product to the hair and scalp like daily. Thank god ive stopped that an theyve grown back i cut down yeasty foods upped my intake of water an acv internally. I did use oil on my scalp tea tree and rosemary and a carrier oil for the yeast then id wash it out (NOT LEAVE IT ON). I did try a derma roller and minoxidil 2 times but honestly just changing up those few things helped so much! Idk if all that was right but one thing i keep getting criticism about is how much i wash my hair 1 times a week sometimes more or less but if my scalp itches ima wash it. if my hair feels dry instead i putting hella product in my hair im gonna clean it deep condition it and then style it again. Thank you for helping me and i know i dont do it all the right way im still watching an learning thank you

This is so good! I am going to say, in love, that I am so glad I did not go hard in the paint on the curl style for me. I did have that cone issue, so I wore my hair curly styles for 1.5 yrs. But really saw more damage from that so I stopped. Then the next press, I saw a complete change! Today, 2 weeks ago, stopped wearing edge control for the first time in my life! So I'm hoping to see change in the future from that and implement things you mention more, so it's crazy to think, well just get great shampoo and spend more time on mine and my daughter's hairs. Cause omg, when she is 13, 17 omg her hair will be doubled. Geesh. So I am so grateful for your time in spreading this education. Good hair or not as folks always tell me, God be to glory for this hair, so oh well, it's about to get better and I'm thrilled! Thank you so much and use to love your videos back then, yours was then best to beng watch lol. And seeing this now, I love it! You are blessed!

Yesss@cyndoll😘 NY in the building Brooklyn grown with THICK SKIN. I have been natural my ENTIRE LIFE and I'm your moms age. My hair has changed with hormonal changes but it was thick dense and long. I stopped greasing my scal at 10 bcus my mom listening to my gma her ma n law piling on that stinky dax blk grease and crown royal that smelled like old wht women and had my hair flat stiff and my scalp collected EVERYTHING (say it slow).. I just washed my hair one side at a time bcus it would clog the drain bcus of length. When i got old enough i took myself to an old school marcel oven and hot come kitchen stylist. She washed rubbed something on it combed it out put me under hooded dryer then put a lil something on it and press the hell out of my hair. When they all passed away and NO ONE WANTED TO LEARN THE TECHNIQUES so, it died with them. I NEVER HAD HEAT DAMAGE. I loved a prees n curl that stayed straight and curly for 4wks. Then i just blow dried my hair with a big comb with close teeth. Girl my hair was so long and think. Then, in my mid 20s i stared doing my hair myself but my problem was, I was refreshing my style daily with heat. When my hair sstarted looking weak and no longer fluffy idk what was wrong. 2k8 i decided to be a curly natural. I wanted to see if my curls could look like my sister (ringlets) it took years to untrain my hair and i fell in law ve with my curls but they backfired on me when they dried.😢 I watched team natural and tried styles bcus i never knew any currently styles. My hair got thick and the longer it got the more my curl stretched. WHEW...😂😂😂 All this to say, i hate wet head and hair feeling. I did twists but not twist out and wng was to much work. I'm older and ive had hormones change surgies back to back and the toll its taken on my hair is hard but i am back on blowing out my hair during this time of the year and doing what i call wash in go but I i FULLY DRY my hair, and box braids big ones and 2 french braids. Ive been healthy tail bone at least 3x since 2k16 and 2k22. I just recently cut 12in off bcus it was see thru. K=KEEP I =IT S =SIMPLE S =ST@#$! or SISTA. ❤ THANK YOU CYN

I tried using coconut oil on my scalp about 10 years ago. About 3 days later I parted my hair and had the worst dandruff I’ve ever seen. It was at that point I never oiled my hair again. I also tried the sulfate free shampoo and my hair itched like heck. I have found the best for my scalp is regular washing about every 1 to 2 weeks and not putting product on my scalp, or leaving my hair or scalp wet for a prolonged time. I silk press my hair and it has worked best for me. Prolonged “protective” styles do more damage than help for me. My hair has grown the longest and thickest by my silk press routine. You speak the truth. It takes me about an hr and a half to do my hair so it’s carefree for me ❤❤

I was coming to her with all of these crazy "methods" that I saw on KZbin. She straight up cursed me out & told me to stop wash & go's because my hair is weakest when wet. I listened to ladies on KZbin instead of a LICENSED COSMETOLOGIST for a good 5 years...My hair broke off, wouldnt grow, felt mushy and my scalp was on FIRE. Finally I went back to her with my hair in shambles. She asked me "Have you had enough? I STOPPED all of that foolishness. I only use Design Essentials shampoo/conditioner and kenra blow out lotion. I begin all of my styles blown out. I either set it with rollers or press it once a week. It is simple and I MADE IT HARD. I thank my friend for stopping this many years ago. Blow dry her hair and put in in two braids going to the back mold here like baby hair with foam and leave her alone. Your styling her hair wet is giving her damage before she’s finish a growth cycle.

A full human hair growth cycle is 7 years! Like I said when it’s been out long enough I will think about using it! You all are so easy to manipulate it’s sad! When a product is out longer than one full human hair growth cycle I will use it. Stop commenting feelings we deal in facts! The blow dryer has not been on the market long enough for you to make the statements the main model is not 7 years old. You have surface level information I’m INSIDE the industry and long term this blow dryer is a no go. If it was so great don’t you think a cosmetologist that does 12 people in one day would support it as a time saver? Ask yourself why only 2% of professionals use a tool that’s been on the market for over a year? We all know the game you just don’t. You really think that putting your hair in a hole and letting a machine dry your hair is lower manipulation than doing it by hand? Your a very easy target, your just telling yourself that to feel better about letting this industry play you out of hundreds of dollars for a blow dryer. Smh, do what you want to do. This is why no one wants to help us we think we know everything. Use it put 9 years from now when hair weathering sets in remember you were both warned.

@@IamCynDollI am a “lazy natural” i wash my hair, moisturize it, and put in protective styles such as mini braids or twists cornrows etc. and leave it in those styles for a month and repeat. I let my friend straighten it because she said knew how. I know exactly how my hair was damaged she did not properly blow dry my hair but I made sure heat protectant was used throughout the whole process. She hot comb and pressed my hair over 5 times just for my hair to just look blown out. I completely understand it is my fault for letting her touch my hair after terribly blowing drying it but I had a date coming up and I just wanted to switch it up. I also knew from prior research that pressing your hair once every blue moon won’t hurt. Before this one incident I haven’t straightened my hair since my 8th grade dance in spring of 2019 which is like 5 years ago roughly. I am very upset about situation because my hair is fairly long it stops around my mid back past my bra strap and I really don’t want to cut it. I also didn’t let her finish after I caught a glimpse of what my hair looked like. The damage is only in the back; say for instance if you are braiding it the back 2 rows would have the damage. Another thing I would like to point out I do not have any straight pieces but the curl pattern is looser and feels a bit rougher than the unaffected hair. ^^^
@IamCynDoll
@IamCynDoll 10 ай бұрын
Again something you did wrong not the flat iron. Thanks for sharing but you need to go back to the drawing board and fix the hairshaft disorder. If all you’ve been doing is braiding your hair your hair shaft is weak. If you keep your legs folded for 3 months without stretching them would you be able to get up and run or would you have to get your legs use to moving again? You can’t go from braids for years straight to a silk press your hair will be damaged for sure. You need to strength the hairshaft . If the curl pattern wasn’t damaged that wasn’t heat damage. Now that your hair is straight you can see the true state of your hair with no products and no fillers. She did nothing wrong that’s normal for people who never see their hair straight you now see the true state of your hair and what all these years of braiding have done.❤️

I think relaxers did so much hair damage and with team natural it was giving healthy thick hair. Our relationship with our hair go back decades so the opportunity to be confident and feeling beautiful without relaxers was appealing . This is the middle ground having healthy hair no matter how you style it is key. Every black girl knowing they too can have hair down their back if they wanted it. And not depending on if I can afford a beautician or not. Growing up most of our hair was jacked up and we didn’t know how to take care of it which fostered low self esteem.

I dont care about long hair, i just want to do care for my colour, have healthy care. Use products that will maintain my hair. I love doing my hair and very patient. I just want simple products and heat styling products. Am good. I use keracare and cream of nature to straight my hair. I dont know if this is a good product but i enjoy doing anything to my hair. I can use curl formers right? i am bad with flexi rods

Sure but I recommend practicing first. Get a mannequin from Amazon that matches your texture. Practice on that and style it weekly as you would if it were your hair. If the mannequin turns out good with no breakage or issues try it on your hair. That’s how a professional learns. Don’t play in your hair learn and then apply once you perfect it.

My friends that don't have relaxers put more products in their hair than I do.

It's a scam. My trichologists told me I only need 5 products. Shampoo, deep conditioner, leave in conditioner, leave-in detangler and a scalp leave-in.

You ever heard of Glow in Peace? She's one of the real ones on KZbin as well!. It's painful but you're right and she's right! AfricanHairgod is another one 😊He gets so annoyed with the natural hair community!

@@IamCynDoll You're welcome 🙏🏿🥰... I am looking to book an appointment with you soon. I did a natural hair consultation almost a year ago and it was a waste of time. She didn't say anything about my hair regimen, and all we talked about was her spiritual life! I love God and I've been a Christian for over 20 plus years, but I got off the video, and I had nothing. I came in with nothing and I left out with nothing. I had my pad and my pencil ready to go... She showed herself during the last 5 minutes of the video.
