When William "Mista Lawnge" McLean met Mike Gee of the Jungle Brothers and DJ Red Alert, they encouraged him to start his own hip hop group after they witnessed his DJ set at a show in the early ‘80s. Barely in his teens and on the shorter end of the spectrum, Lawnge, known then as Shorty Doo-Wop, needed to stand on milk crates to even reach the turntables. His skills, though, were undeniable and he blew everyone within earshot away. Later, Lawnge, the producer, would go on to recruit Andres "Dres" Titus, the rapper and lyricist, to form the hip hop group Black Sheep in 1989.

Back in the late '90s, Dres popped up in this little check cashing store I was working in at the time with a 5k royalty check. This was in Raleigh, North Carolina and I couldn't believe he was there. I had to do a double take. I asked him if he was who I thought he was, and he said yeah, and that was pretty much it. He was mad cool about it, took his loot, and bounced. I didn't ask him for an autograph or anything, but it was kind of cool seeing them there.

I saw him today when I was walking in Queens. He was in his car at the light. I pointed and waved at him and he rolled down his window. I walked over and we spoke a few seconds till the light changed. We shook hands and everything. He was so cool.

I am now 43 but I will never forget back when I was a tween growing up in Tucson AZ. A group called Black Sheep was all over the airwaves with a catchy song "This or That" at that time we didn't even know the correct name of the song(The Choice is Yours and BTW I was today years old when I learned the songs true name.) We got tickets to an Ice Cube/Yo-Yo concert unbeknownst to us the announcer comes out and says Yo-Yo was unable to make it and a wave of disappointment went over the audience. Literally 2 minutes later Black Sheep is announced no one even knew they were there and we are all still in shock from the previous announcement about Yo-Yo who was at that time blazing on the charts. Suddenly Black Sheep busts on to the stage breaking s**t up, kicking things on stage and starts trying to hype up the crowd. " Come on....uhhh". The crowd (us included) were flabbergasted... but it gets worse then one of the Black Sheep members says "wave you hands in the air". The crowd still in shock doesn't give the response they liked, I guess. He then says man "F**k Tucson, Y'all wack and they walk off the stage never even singing or rapping another note. After that to this day I never listened to Black Sheep again.

The Black Sheep album Wolf in Sheeps Clothing is still one of the greatest albums I have ever heard til this day hand down it’s amazing. It’s a shame they weren’t able to get it together. I genuintly don't know if people will get how fast the rap scene evolved in the 90's. Black Sheep are SPECIFICALLY early 90's. Like the sound and everything. They were with the Naughty By Natures, etc. Right then and after New Jack Swing. The mid 90's was SUPER different with 2 Pac/Snoop and B.I.G. Then the late 90's was different too with a total shift to all 'flash and glamour' and boasts. In the end it was "The Choice is Yours" that lived on but... it would be Chi-Ali that stole the spotlight with actual murder.

The essential.change in lyrical style,beats, ,dress decorum ,dance , was a constant change influx throughout hip hop before the 90's era, the late 70',s to early 80's ,was distinctly different then mid 80's ,which was certainly different then late 80's. Constant social agenda human rights equality plight within the African American Fraternity ,the maturity of the African American youth into udults hood ,eager to be heard naturally created a constant change dynamic in hip Hops first 3 decades in 3 year increments's. When the organic basic principles of hip hop were eradicated by billion dollar record executives ,lyrics ,dance, graffetti, DJ ,B boying ,B girl, dress style , it caused a ripple effect , genicidal message of African American self hate lyrics meant to increase record sales in order to attract a Caucasian audience intoxicated with urban black life and African American continous self imposed ethnic implosion ,meant artists can now go platinum at the expense of their community . It was percieved corny to be seen dancing ,beat boxing ,talking about hanging out and having a good time without violence or sexual misconduct being orchestrated , before long most of hip hop after the mid 90's decade sounded the same ,everybody basically dressed the same according to their region in America .
@KtotheG
@KtotheG 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the '90s were so varied. There were multiple sounds and trends throughout the decade. It has to be divided into at least 3 sections... early '90s, mid '90s, and late '90s... they are all very different. And then regionalism was big then, too.... so you can divide it into West Coast, East Coast, South, and Midwest. By the '00s, the sounds became the same, but you can divide that decade into commercial vs underground. Regionalism also began to die that decade as the various regions all started to blend together and cohere with one sound.

There are a million people who can sing, rap, and play instruments very well. And yes, it’s great to dream of becoming a world-famous gazillionaire. But it’s still a great accomplishment to travel the world doing what you love for a while, and [hopefully] make enough money for a house and for the kids’ college. Let’s not act like this is a tragedy. They had a short but GREAT run, and are still remembered.

I drove my best friend nuts rapping in her ears every second of the day. Lol It’s one of the best hip hop albums in my eyes and I was a huge fan. Of course as a fan I did wait for the next album and I have to say the second album wasn’t hitting like the first. I’d love to request a video like this on the groups “y?n-vee” and “Lo Key?” If possible/not done yet….I know one member from y?n-vee passed and that they were a group by Tupac or something like that but yeah. If this comment happens to be seen. Lol
