Black farmers once made up 14 percent of America's farmers. Today, black farmers account for less than 2 percent. One of them, fourth-generation sugar cane farmer Wenceslaus 'June' Provost Jr., is fighting to maintain his family's farming legacy. June and his family were once part of the 1999 Pigford lawsuit, a massive class-action suit brought against the USDA alleging discriminatory practices. The case resulted in the largest settlement in U.S. government history and an admission of wrongdoing by the USDA. But June and his wife Angie say discrimination based on race still permeates the industry today, and allege continued discriminatory practices by their lender has pushed them out of farming and have cost them their home.

Am from Africa and these sort of stuff Makes me sad. My advise to Black farmers in America is to think about corporate farming in Africa. Plenty of Land, good weather and manpower. Moreover, you can easily self-fund and raise some good Capital by Exporting your produce. Taxation on Agricultural products is obviously less than manufactured goods. This really broke my heart.

Black tobacco farmers in North Carolina faced these exact same discriminatory practices. My great grandparents owned a working farm, but that legacy was gone, shortly after their death. It's a methodical and calculated land grab to stifle any attempt of passing wealth from one generation to the next. This type of institutional racism is still functioning like a well-oiled machine to this day,

I was displeased, and felt disappointed, but its Liberal California for 1, and I have much bigger problems with water rights..Also the biggest problem with disappearing Black Farmers is the push back from families. It's just that this kind of shit is always happening in 2nd and 3rd world countries, in places the least likely to affect me. All throughout the 20th century they were killing farmers in an effort to collectivize farms. Now a few countries in Africa are doing it *in the name of* racial justice. Not just Republicans but capitalism in general no matter if they are Republican Democrat or centrist. Capitalism supports private farmers like these black families. Socialism just takes the farms under government control and profits off of it. Look at any socialist country. All farms in these countries are government ran and maintained. I know what your going through. I'm a 3rd generation black farmer, here in Virginia. The usda farm office, still turns down black farmers on a regular basis. I have to work 2 jobs and do other odd jobs just to keep my farming dream alive. One of the main down falls with black farm families, is when Daddy and grandaddy's die. The sons and grandsons don't step up and keep the farm going. My grandparents grew grain and raised hogs on the farm. And I have plans to start raising hogs again. But I know it won't be easy. I too have been turned down by the farm office for a loan. I don't need the government's money now, I went to a higher power to finance me and my farm. ALL OF MY HELP COMETH FROM THE LORD, IF IT HAD NOT BEEN FOR THE LORD ON MY SIDE WHERE WOULD I BE. My mother was a praying women, and she taught me, WHAT SO EVER YOU ASK AND ASK IN JESUS NAME he will do it. And I can testify, he will do it. With the help of the Lord I have gotten every piece of equipment I needed, that I originally put in for in the farm loan. All I can say is keep your head up and hold to God's word. He will bring you through, because I thank the Lord every day for all he has done and what he's about to do. Lord please bless the Provost family and every other black farm family out there.

All the things discussed in this are the same things happening to most farmers I know. Farmers of any race. These problems are not unique to "black" farmers and not because of racism as a whole. The people that buy commodities don't know what color the farmer was. Commodities prices are set by supply and demand and grade or quality of the goods. It is entirely possible to raise a crop that will not sell for more than the cost of producing that crop. The more a farmer is operating on borrowed money, the more his cost to produce the product. To start from nothing, and buy land to farm is impossible and has been for some time. To borrow enough money to buy the land to farm would cost more to amortize the loan than the value of the crop....in most cases. All that being said, I know many successful farmers who farm land owned by others, using their own equipment and bearing all the production cost and almost every one of them has an operating loan....and if or when they can not repay the operating loan they are out of business, regardless of what color they are. By the way..... the split for farming another persons ground is usually 60/ 40 in favor of the land owner. Some would call that share cropping.
