The year was 1989. A British musical band manager by the name of Nigel Martin-Smith embarked on a journey to create a male vocal singing group he intended to model after popular U.S. boy band New Kids on the Block. He was soon introduced to young singer-songwriter Gary Barlow, who’d been performing in clubs since the age of 15. Impressed with Gary’s writing abilities, Nigel decided to make him the focal point of the group. The following year, a campaign was launched in Manchester, as well as other surrounding cities, to find young men who could sing and dance.18-year-old football hopeful, or soccer depending on which part of the world you’re from, Mark Owen would be next to enter the picture and together with Gary started calling themselves The Cutest Rush. Eventually, the addition of 22-year-old DJ Howard Donald, 19-year-old painter and dancer Jason Orange and a 16-year-old Robbie Williams would complete the five-some, which initially went by the name Kick It.

I'm Irish. Unless you lived in Ireland or the UK at the time, you'll never understand how famous Take That actually were. It was insane! The helpline for distraught fans was actually set up because Robbie left the group, it wasn't just when the band split. Robbie leaving was national news! It was mad. Take That was everywhere at the time.

I love when you cover the European pop groups that were not popular here in America and which a lot of us Americans never heard of. I have relatives that grew up in Africa and Europe and as a child in the 90s and 2000s I would visit them or stay with them when they would come to America and they would play their music or introduce me to them. I always wondered, why aren't these other European pop acts like West Life, Sugababes, Take That, Blue, etc popular here in America like The Spice Girls, Beatles, S Club 7, or One Direction?! They have amazing hits. I still listen to them today. 😊🙌🏽

For context, they were bigger than One DIrection, BTS, Backstreet Boys, NSync, and 30 years later, still immensely popular and appreciated in UK. Gary Barlow, one of the lead vocalists, wrote 90% of their 90s albums.

If you are from the United States and didn't know about these guys back then, it just means you only listened to mainstream music and listened to what was handed to you. No shade, but it just shows the power of the industry. The only reason I know their music was because I made a conscious effort to find music from other parts of the world because TV and radio played the same 10 artists over and over.

Currently have been in a Take That moment this past week and came across your video today, so thank you for posting this. I grew up in California and loved reading the UK teen and music magazines so I was a big Take That fan in middle school in the mid 90s and had a ton of pen pals in the UK and across Europe who would send me posters, CDs photos and stories about seeing the guys on tour and all that. It was quite the scandal when Robbie left the group, which was right around the time “Back For Good” was starting to climb the charts here. He was seen in the video and single cover but removed from further artwork and never mentioned in any US promo. Soon after that, the group disbanded. I’ve followed Robbie’s career since then and got to see him perform (and met him) at his Vegas residency in 2019. The group as mentioned in the video is now Gary, Howard and Mark and they continue to put out great songs.

As a Brit living in the US since 2004, I adore and appreciate these European band mini docs. ❤ UK Pop and R&B was my life as well as whatever US music music was popular & international. But then after moving I fell off with the UK music and just kind of listened to whatever was out here but was introduced to so much more R&B I didn’t really care LOL . I feel bad so these videos give me a bit of closure knowing how they all ended up til the last thing they did. X

I ended up buying all of Take That's albums during COVID - mostly because I saw their video for "Patience" and did not realize that they had 1. gotten back together in the mid 00's, 2. brought Robbie back for the one album, and 3. are still going with just Mark, Gary, and Howard. I became such a huge fan of TT in just the past 2 years (I'm from the US but living in Eastern Europe), and of Mark as a solo artist.

I think one of the reasons Robbie WIlliams' career never really took off in the US is that he's too British. For me, it's never been about him having a spectacular voice or musical ability, for me it's mostly about entertainment, the all-around package and that includes his humor. While the British and the Germans (I'm German by the way) get that humor and his big mouth right away, I think Americans don't really get it and see him as slightly arrogant. However, I think he could and should have had more success with "Swing When You're Winning".

Easy to forget how big Take That were here in the UK & other countries in the early to mid 90s, and how many teenage girls were distraught when they split up - I remember reading a magazine article about a girl going to a counsellor about it. I think they could easily have had continued success after Robbie left, and although I wasn't a fan of theirs in the 90s, I was happy for them when they returned to a positive reception. Their sound has evolved over the years and I do think they were short-changed by the media and music industry when Robbie went on to achieve big success - I wasn't aware Gary developed an eating disorder in the late 90s but am not surprised as Robbie's success resulted in the media treating him like a bit of a joke, which he probably didn't deserve. Good to see they all seem to be on better terms now. One thing that does still make me chuckle Gary at 1996 press conference: "Unfortunately the rumours are true, as of today... there's no more!" Gary at 2006 press conference: "Unfortunately the rumours are true, as of today... we're going back on the road!"

I've never heard of this band, Sis. However, I vaguely remember the line, "Whatever I said, whatever I did, I didn't mean it. I just want you back for good." That sounds so familiar to me. Anyway, I'm hella mo'ded right nah because I never knew that Robbie Williams was in a band. I used to love 1999's _Millennium._ That was my jam during that period. I never bothered to follow up on him. Let's face it, he couldn't really sing. From the looks of it, this band does very well within the European music marketplace. I think the rub between American bands and European bands comes from corporate. In America, we already have plans for certain bands. Why bother w/ outside bands? If a label done spent such & such dollars on the rollout for the Backstreet Boys then why bother w/ Europe's Take That? Same thing happened to Craig Ashley David. His debut LP and movement was larger than life overseas. He tried it here and it ended up being take it or leave it (for the urban consumers). I loved him (and still do), but the average urban consumer was close-minded during that period. Usher Raymond was top choice. I remember when girls were like, "Oooh, why he sound like that?" It's like, "That baby is from the doggon UK. Give him a break." A culture clash, if you will. I would circle back to Take That, but I don't have anything more to say. Great video, Sis.

Take That are an immensely successful and accomplished bad who write their own material and who also often play their own instruments. Take That are not your typical boyband and their continued success for 30 years now proves just that. Along their 30 million worldwide albums sales, they are also massively accomplished in touring. Their 2011 Progress Tour alone grossed almost €200 million in the UK alone. Over the course of their career, the band has made more than €600 million in live entertainment revenue. Their albums sales worldwide: 1992 - 1,5 million - Take That & Party 1993 - 3,2 million - Everything Changes 1995 - 4,1 million - Nobody Else 1996 - 4,5 million - Greatest Hits 2005 - 2,8 million - Never Forget: Ultimate Collection 2006 - 4,5 million - Beautiful World 2008 - 2,8 million - Circus 2010 - 4,5 million - Progress 2014 - 1,2 million - III 2017 - 0,5 million - Wonderland 2018 - 0,5 million - Odyssey

I love that Americans believe that if a band is not succesful in the US then they're not succesful at all. Take That still is massive in the worls, meanwhile all the bands or singers that were number 1 in the US back then are now long gone.

Wow surprised to see TT featured here but yh they were like the modern day Beatles. Pure hysteria! Even though I weren't one of those girls crying their eyes out I have to say they have produced some exceptional songs. One of the few successful bands to truly stand the test of time

I know about take that even though they never blew in the us. bc I'm a music lover. When I found out Robbie Williams returned I was very shocked I thought it would never happened. It was like Justin returning to NSYNC which I believe will never happen but you never know 🤷

Love Take That. Its funny as they have never disappeared in the UK. They're still very much popular. Robbies new video just popped up today too. Also Jessica Simpson wasn't the original singer of Angels and still prefer the original.

Take That had the potential to make it big in America, but their effeminate dress code prevented them from achieving that success. Unfortunately, America wanted to market a boy band with a very masculine appearance.

Music has always been a copycat business and the 80's & 90's were no exception and #TakeThat was defiantly a copycat group and had very little chance to make it big in the US #80'smusic
