Miami nightclubs in the ‘80s were one of the hottest spots around to hear the familiar keyboard riffs and electro funk drum-machine patterns of one of the most popular music genres at the time; Latin Freestyle! It’s also where this trio met, honed their skills and embarked on a journey to stardom. Then, in the blink of an eye, they were gone and three new lookalikes showed up in their place. Let’s find out what happened to ‘80s Latin Freestyle group Exposé.

I went to Catholic High School in NYC, and every Friday, around lunchtime, somebody (promoters?) would scatter hundreds of colorful promotion cards on the table and floors, promoting the lineups on who was performing at clubs like The Roxy, The Palladium, L'Amour East, The Underground. I was confused cause the cards sometimes said "Under 18 not admitted" but all the freshmen, sophmore and junior girls always went?!? Yes, I was a naïve nerd. I DID hear about Teen Nights though. I never had a chance to go, but I always had crushes on all those perfomers- Company B, Sweet Sensation. Monday morning I listened to everybody talk about the clubs they went to over the weekend. Sigh.

I had the privilege of seeing Expose perform at the Del Mar Fair in California around 1987 I think. Their dance routines were quite aerobic, yet they seemed to possess the stamina to belt out the vocals. This was great!! I loved me some Expose'! They always had that fresh, fun sound that was not bubblegum. I still play their music and am happy they were able to persevere through the drama to regain their identities and footing in the industry. I always felt each member was equally talented, bringing the right ingredient to the gumbo.

I have seen them twice. Once in the 80's as the opening act to Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam. We also saw them perform in Palmdale, Calif in 2007. One of my greatest memories was them singing happy birthday to me during the meet and greet. They still sound and look amazing.

The line-up that everyone knows....Jeanette, Ann, and Gioia was the most successful. The original line-up's contribution shouldn't be forgotten, but I cannot picture Exposé without Jeanette, Ann, and Gioia. They took this group to new heights, and making Exposé one of the greatest Girl Groups of all-time.

I just saw an interview that Laurie Miller did while I was going down the Expose rabbit hole fondly remembering my late teen years. Some of the comments on that video regarding the original members of Expose being the "true" or "only" Expose is such a HUGE disservice to Jeanette, Ann and Goia. So they weren't the first but because of their talent and their persistence and their hard work they are the ones who took the Expose brand to levels far beyond the first iteration and have been doing so for more than 35 years. Jeanette, Ann and Goia (with a shoutout to Kelly Moneymaker) ARE Expose.
@The_Notorious_CRG

@veganhigler6541 she was the replacement for Goia when she lost her voice due to a benign tumor on one of her vocal cords. I think after one album with Kelly and then the greatest hits compilation Arista didn't renew their contract with Expose so the group disbanded. Expose got back together about a decade later with Ann, Jeanette and Goia after she recovered her voice and Kelly is an honorary member, welcome to perform with them when called upon. If you look up Kelly's career on Google she's had quite a career herself though!

Sandra was my mom's cousin & I grew up listening to her music. She reconnected with the family when her father, my grandmother's brother passed the Christmas before she did. She was so close to him & would call my grandma every few weeks to check in & ask about stories. I remember I picked up the phone once & had a brief conversation with her right before she passed away & she knew I had dreams to become an actress, I was 16 at the time & she told me to keep pushing & never let the industry turn me into something I wasn't. It stuck with me although I didn't end up getting into acting it meant a lot. Watching this actually brought more feels than I thought it would.

I wrote this on their page for "Let Me Be The One" and I'll say it again. The reason Exposé was so dope was because they had three legitimate lead singers in their group. It made their sound versatile in a way others didn't have. Jeannette could do the up tempo stuff and the ballads, Gioia had that powerful voice that let itself to more of an R&B sound and Ann could do pop stuff. So when you think of their best stuff, it's literally a matter of preference what you liked because they had so much in their catalog.

Their third album was fire, and probably slightly ahead of it's time. It was actually radio dropping a lot of pop music for grunge and rap, as well as Clive's insistence that Expose be more like Wilson Phillips that derailed them and several pop artists--including Wilson Philips. Instead of releasing hard bops like "Angel," "Face to Face," "I Think I'm in Trouble," or "I Specialize In Love," they released mostly ballads which were Adult Contemporary hits, but not played on Top-40 stations.
