Code Lyoko was my childhood. I actually knew the show was French when watching it as a kid. I could tell it was dubbed and there are small indicators that it takes places in France. The kids always had croissants on their plates, some of the character's last names, when they zoomed out on maps it started in France, and the opening theme has a whole bunch of French names listed. It had a pretty solid dub, though. I'm actually rather sad that Moonscoop went under.

As a French person it’s really hard for me to accept the argument of the dubbing... All of the movies in the cinema, all of the shows on TV are dubbed in French from English. It has always been like that and it has never stopped us from watching English speaking programs. Our translator and dubbers manage to do an amazing job to syncronize the mouth to the voice as much as they can. Why is it such a problem for English speakers? If a show is well written and compelling enough I don’t care what language it’s written in I’m going to love it. Bring on the subs! Only thing I get embarrassed about is finding out the translation got a little screwy and it was supposed to say one thing and got translated to something else though I guess that’s the price we have to pay for translating to English. (And by that I mean the original vs a dubbed version where complete sentences are changed for some reason)

Well, your translators and dubbers do an amazing job at synchronizing as much as they can. Our dubbers just find a sentence that lasts as long as what the character is saying and ship it while also completely butchering the translation, tone of voice, and emotion.

"the show was VERY formulaic" - season 1 was mostly deactivate tower, return to start of episode. Season 2 onwards had the mystery of Aelita, Franz and then the replikators. Thanks for the reaction. To be honest, I think the 1st season hit that perfect sweet spot where the identical plot, with wildly varied stories, actually caused tension, because while we all know that the kids won't die, we also know that they are going to come within a hairs breath of dying in just a few minutes. It's a difficulty balance, but if any series had the creativity and variety to pull that off, it's this show.
@MiniLinlin4 жыл бұрын
This show is made of the amazing chemistry the characters have. I didn't watch this as a kid, the 3D animation of the 1st season was so off-putting that I never gave it a chance but I ended up watching it like 2 years ago out of curiosity. Sometimes the episodes were formulaic but as the episodes advanced, it was nice to see how XANA would actually win sometimes. And I cannot stress this enough: character relationships were the thing I enjoyed the most in this series, they felt very natural and I felt as if I knew these kids irl or something. The romance between Yumi and Ulrich is the only thing that kinda starts dragging as time goes on, but I really love the friendship the Lyoko Warrios have. It's the reason I feel as if I really had some nostalgia attached to the series even though technically I don't. I feel as if I've known these kids for years.

I get your point about the time travel making it seem like there's not a lot at stake at times, but it's really worth noting that it isn't like it can save the day no matter what. Like if someone dies, unless they have something they can do outside of the time travel, THE TIME TRAVEL CAN'T SAVE THAT PERSON. so no, I would not say that the time-travel mechanic removes the idea of stakes in the show.

I'm Italian and I bought the books referenced in the video (at 6:14) as they came out here for something like 17€ each. While still being books for children and teens, I found them to be really great. They are the actual follow-up to the series, unraveling all the mysteries left unsolved, introducing new characters and villains and giving a proper end to the story. The only complaint I have with the book series is how William is basically left out of the plot, but that's nitpicky. I hope that an English translation can turn up online, 'cause it's a real shame that much of the fanbase can't experience the actual finale for the series

1:28 well, until season two that is. At a point in that season they realize returning to the past makes XANA stronger so they try to avoid it as much as possible. Also the whole "time travel" thing isn't like how you make it sound. When XANA attacks, they go to Lyoko to deactivate the tower, then launch a return to the past, which just brings them back to the beginning of the episode (usually just earlier that day). Everything is exactly the same except XANA doesn't attack and the four heroes remember the jump in time, while no one else does (yes there is a reason for this).

This show is fantastic, but the writers seemed to give up on Aelita after she's brought back to reality, out of the computer. They made her stupid. Aelita CONSTANTLY is making basic mistakes only a toddler would. It's as if she can't learn from any negative experience & belongs in an assisted living facility for her own safety. The main villain Xana & his minions are always able to trick her & the other teens always have to save her from killing herself or jeopardizing their entire operation. Aelita doesn't even know how to use her own powers/gear. There is a moment in which she's about to fall into the void & Odd has to use 1 of his projectiles to hit the flight band on her wrist in order to save her. Aelita's hands weren't bound. She wasn't unconscious or intoxicated. The writers seem to either hate her or, as I said before, gave up on her.

not mention the art quality, everything in Code Lyoko was surprisingly reasonable!!! if you notice, in the last episode, when Jeremy and Aelita ran the anti Xana program and it ran from the CORE. i thought it would appear from the interface where Aelita activated the program but NO! because Jeremy said that the core is where every program from supercomputer can be through and ran in the virtual world. that surprised me

It was so ahead of its time, both in the cgi scenes (which are almost a staple in today's kids shows, or just 100% cgi and lazy..) and the story was pretty great too! If I recall correctly, one of the episodes involves the evil computer shutting down / messing with the power grid and causing trains, traffic signs, etc. to malfunction in a way that would cause harm. It was really creepy, and I loved it.
