I bought a Craftsman lawn mower with a Kohler engines 15 years ago. This lawn mower sits outside in the rain and snow. Every year i do a oil change and change the air filter. Every second year I change the fuel filter and spark plug. Some say I do way to much maintenance on it. The way I see it I spend roughly $15.00 every year and $25.00 every second year doing maintenance. Again I bought this 15 years ago and it starts every year on the first pull. I also use 92 octane gas with next to nothing ethanol. I also drain my tank and carb every fall. Once this one fails I will get a Toro.

I’ve always owned the older craftsman’s with the 190CC briggs quantum those are the best, I have the same model black craftsman you have and starts on the first pull everytime. The new decks on these mowers are like MTD made and it’s cheap, I have a 2016 FWD model with the 7.25 platinum engine. The decks on these older ones are very well made and strong. These 22 inch craftsman’s are beasts! And they only make 21 inch ones mainly now 🙄

Great Job. I recently purchased a Craftsman lawn mower and like you greatly disappointed at all the plastic. Sad to see Craftsman's inferior products

Thanks .. I recently got a new self propelled walk behind "well known" brand but "not Craftsman" and on the third gentle use the mower went over a slight mogul and the left rear wheel mount just broke away from the axle at the weld .. the reason for that new mower, the previous one did the same thing after less than one season. The mowers were both used well within what would be called "careful-gentle" use and were one of the best known brands on the market. One additional .. the discharge chute was held on by three plastic teeth .. the force of simple uncut grass from the next lawn row to be mowed "brushing against it" constantly dislodged it from the mower. And this brand was what is advertised as better than the rest. I've since gone totally electric rechargeable and am so far impressed with the quality.

Wow! Craftsman really has gone downhill. Decades ago they were workhorse machines. Nothing fancy but started and got the job done with minimal maintenance. I'm wondering how much it originally sold for. I just replaced a 2007 (15 year old) Craftsman with B&S engine - it was made by Husqvarna for Sears - a bit more unusual as most were made by Murray and MTD. Looked at current ones at Lowe's and wasn't impressed. As with what you found, the deck might be steel, but the front and back with the drive and wheels - and where the handle attaches - are plastic. Ugh. They are throw-away mowers now. In addition, nearly all are FWD, which sucks for me with a sloped lawn and a modest drainage ditch across the property frontage. Can't get traction. RWD is the only option for traction on slopes. Bought a Honda HRN216VKA. Much, much better made for same price. No comparison. How the mighty have fallen.

So? At least they still work.

The best way to learn how to service, and resell lawnmowers...just do it.

Definitely keep your older one with the 190cc!! I have one bought new in 2006 & it still runs & starts on the first pull. It was made by Husqvarna for Craftsman, all the newer ones are made by MTD with way too much plastic. I also got a new Craftsman with a Honda engine, but I can't get rid of my old one, its way too reliable & easy to repair/maintain.

Yes I'll work on a briggs quantum any day, not those new ones other than a carb clean. They are just too cheaply made to do any other work on them.

Have had a Briggs and Stratton for 12 years now and the best way to take care of it is cut your grass then put it away until you need to cut your grass again, nothing special, starts on 1st pull everytime.

Craftsman never really made their own mowers. They were always made for them. It’s just there standards have gotten lower and cheaper.
