What Happened to Curved Screen Phones?

Samsung's Galaxy S23 Ultra and S24 Ultra may look almost identical at first glance, but there's one big change that might not jump out at you: the curved screen is gone. Samsung, the brand that once made curved displays the future of smartphones, has ditched them completely in the S24. But why would they drop such an iconic feature?

100% agreed.you had to stick to plastic protectors as opposed to the superior tempered glass protectors. Im so happy that i can now put a tempered glass protector on my s24U. I also have a oneplus 12 which came with a pre-installed plastic protector, which is tough ( its thicker than your average plastic screen protector) and although it shows heavy damage now, i dread removing it bc i know a 3rd party protector wont stick to the edges like the factory installed protector. Im also happy that the oneplus 13 is expected to come out with a flat screen. I will for sure trade in my oneplus 12 for a oneplus 13.

@@XeonoX-h3w yeah, no thanks. i would rather have a futuristic flat screen phone that doesn't require me to GLUE something on it like a caveman Bro! We left the dark ages a long time ago! Something is ironic about curved displays: while a number of high-end smartphones nowadays are phasing out curved displays, there are an increasing number of mid-range phones that have curved displays from manufacturers like Tecno, Infinix, and Lava.

I think saying the consumer drives the market and we choose function over form is very generous. Phones still have glass backs which is very impractical, they don't have headphone jacks, they prioritize thinness instead of making them thicker to allow more room for a bigger battery, plus they'd be easier to hold. We have screen cutouts for cameras, how is that practical? They got rid of LED notification lights, the list goes on.
@kenon6968
@kenon6968 3 ай бұрын
The glass backs was totally designed concept that got forced it upon us, no consumer is clamoring for that "feature"
@ganymedehedgehog371
@ganymedehedgehog371 3 ай бұрын
The consumer does drive the market. Samsung copied Apple for not having a headphone jack but people bought them anyways. Curved screens left because people didn’t want them. The iPhone mini failed since the market said people don’t want small phones.
@MichaelSheaAudio
@MichaelSheaAudio 3 ай бұрын
@@ganymedehedgehog371 Samsung saw the same potential as Apple in that they could take something away and sell you the solution, in this case, wireless earbuds. We'd be dealing in "what ifs", but I would think that Samsung is too big to fail, being the top smartphone manufacturer. Samsung dropped the headphone jack with the S20 in 2020, and at least in North America, who was left making flagship phones that people knew about and would gladly switch to? LG was on their last legs, HTC was dead, Huawei phones were banned in 2019, Sony is still around (my choice) but for dumb legal reasons, the fingerprint scanner was disabled. It still works on the international versions, so luckily I get those in Canada. Their only real competition was the Google Pixel, which even today only makes up about 12% of the North American market. Yes, the world is much more than just North America, but it's an example of where Samsung is at. It's not really Android vs iPhone, it's Samsung vs iPhone. When regular people walk into a store to buy a phone, they'll be greeted with Samsung and Apple as the top options. People were going to buy Samsung phones regardless because they're the top brand and regular people aren't going to do the research into other brands. I can understand curved screens. I've never owned one, but I can tell they'd be awful to use. I don't understand the shift away from smaller phones though. I have smaller hands, so I picked out a relatively small phone that would be easier to handle. For a couple years I used the Sony XZ1 with a 5.2" screen, then in 2021, I got the Sony 5ii with a 6.1" screen, but it's only slightly taller and not as wide so it was a lateral move in terms of size, which is good. I don't know what the deal is with smaller phones, I wish they were more popular. I don't believe brands removed features because people didn't want them though, it was probably more for form. Reviewers like Marques kept pushing and pushing for smaller bezels, thinner designs, and "premium feel". Useful features got in the way of achieving these goals, so they had to go, and I think phones are much worse than they could be because of it. If a phone is supposed to be an all-in-one media device, why are we missing headphone jacks, big batteries, and great internal stereo speakers? They've improved over time, but they could be so much better. Why are we putting glass on the back of phones when these are supposed to be able to withstand the abuse of being on the move? There's so much I could say, I hate the path smartphones have taken and I have for many years now.
@McCaroni_Sup
@McCaroni_Sup 2 ай бұрын
No, the consumer does drive the market. I agree that I hate phones with glass backs, no headphone jack, or limited battery life for the sake of thinness. However, most people don't care about those things, thus their market ubiquity. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean that the market isn't being driven by the consumers. You're not the only consumer in the world. That's like saying video games are not consumer driven just because you hate yearly AAA releases. Yes, you might hate them, but tons of normies eat that slop right up. Let normies be normies, and enjoy the stuff in the market that caters to you.
@MichaelSheaAudio
@MichaelSheaAudio 2 ай бұрын
@McCaroni_Sup potentially, but I also understand that we live in a capitalist society. For something like a headphone jack, was it because people weren't using the headphone jack, or was it a way to make additional sales via dongles and wireless headphones? Glass is more "premium", so they can charge more for it, but it's also fragile, so is it because people want premium feeling but more fragile devices, or is it a way to sell more cases? We know that corporations are just trying to suck us dry, so why should we believe their decisions are anything but a way to make more money? It's possible that they care about and listen to their customers, I'm not too convinced though. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The thing with curved screens was that it had "more screen" which meant more glass which further related to an increased chance of damage and glass breaking which was also more expensive and difficult to repair/replace and thus they went out of trend

Watching this on a flexible OLED! Might be worth noting, iPhones with OLED panels use flexible OLEDs, tucking the end in towards the connector on the board. This allowed them to reduce the bezels.

I do find it sad that they are going away, I really like the curve on my S20+ since the curve is just big enough to have an immersive viewing experience without annoying bezels, but it's also small enough to the point where I haven't really had any issues with lighting or accidental touches. I do agree that phones like the edge series have a curve that's way to mush, but I'd like to see them come back with just a slight curve.

Have an S22 ultra with a curved screen. Glare is no more an issue than flat, never accidentally touched edge of screen. And in the words of Jerryrigeverything glass is glass and glass breaks. Samsung curved screens are just as brittle as Iphone. I see 10x more iphone screens cracked. People who don't put cases on their phones don't protect their investments. Overall, video was mostly inconclusive and only reason Samsung stopped making them is because it's A. Cheaper, and B. (Unlike apple) is a change of design. Because iphone 13 to present are subtle in differences.

Maybe Samsung is going away from overly curved screens because no one really wants them and Apple is doing well with their flat displays. Seriously who really asked for curved displays to begin with? When they first came out I'm pretty sure the majority of people hated it and wished Samsung and other phone makers would go back to making flat screens again.

No chinese phone can do same. I download lots of pics. And specially certain WebP gifs don't run on One plus , and some chinese gallery. Third party is okay but that may be data / privacy issue. Samsung gallery is why I have 512 ( max ) GB of SD on A10 , but my new phone One plus nord 3 is only 256gb and 64Gb SD for music, and extra files. Btw idk if it's good or bad , but new samsung phones look like S24 so it makes them not feel cheap while making s24 questionably cheap. It's same with Redmi14C looking like flagship Oppo / Vivo making them feel cheap or vice versa ( redmi 14c feeling expensive ) also one of 14c is glass back and that's crazy cheap. The phone looks like 300-400 $ atleast ( but is 120$~ ) looks matter because my own 320$ phone looks like 180$ Xiaomi or Techno/Infinix and it makes it feel cheap.

Curved display phones looked really beautiful. I owned a Galaxy S6 edge and still to this day the phone looks amazing. I've seen many curved screen phones over the years and all of those are spectacular from regular flat screens. As cool as it was but these came with some complications. Curve display had mistouch problems. More newest ones definitely solved that problem with software. There was another matter that probably made it economically a baf thing. It was always hard to find curved screen protectors. And those were pricey. Regular screen protectors won't fit good. Not to mention those screen proctors were expensive to manufacture.

I've been using curved screens since 2016. No accidental touches, no glare 0 problems, and I always use a phone case on my $1K+ glass pocket computer because I'm not an idiot. Actually, I remember when the Galaxy s10e came out, and everyone was complaining that it did not have curved edges. Curved edges not only give it a sleeker look, thinner side bezels for a better edge to edge display, but it also feels nicer in the hand for those who don't use a case. Unlike iPhone a few years back, when people were complaining about it's sharp edges digging into their hands. Did it serve any practicality? Not really other than getting rid of side bezels. The only real downside is a little bit more vulnerability to cracking when dropped. Now I'm not saying curved edges are the future, or need to be on every phone, or are specifically a luxury feature, but I will say it is not a hindrance by any means. It's just a design feature, like choosing rims on a car.
