WHAT HAPPENED TO DIMITRI?! Fire Emblem Three Houses Character Analysis

Alright, so I'm gonna take a crack at some Three Houses coverage. This first video is going to star none other than Dimitri himself! The trailer really showed a very drastic change in his character and this is really interesting so I dug a bit into it and tried to analyze a few reasons for why this could have happened.

Ed seems like a follow the rules kind of person while not doing it for her own benefit but the sake of the people she rules. A Lawful Good character would Arrest an angry mob because they are disturbing the peace while a Chaotic Good character would drum up a rebellion just to see that same mob's worries resolved.

I'm not too sure about Dimitri becoming "evil" his line in the trailer was "We must put a stop to the cycle of the strong trampling the weak." which, imo is not a very villainous/bad guy thing to say. There seems to be corruption in the church and maybe he discovers it which leads to him rebelling against the church? Also the Adrestian empire seems to be aiding the church which would explain tensions rising high enough to cause a war. I doubt his story is as simple as the standard "fallen hero" trope

Just throwing this out here, but i think Edelgard is what happened to Dimitri. She obviously hates the church and their crests, Dimitri being from a "holy kingdom" would make them enemies. In Heroes, Dimitri talks about how he lost his family and remembers each and every person he has seen die. He also says that "morals are never worth taking a life" or something to that effect. In the Blue Lions trailer, Dimitri claims he walks the "true path of Justice." Edelgard claims she has no choice but to destroy people who believe in justice that isnt explicitly what she herself declares. Edelgard becomes an emperor, of the single largest territory in Fodlan, and then a war mysteriously starts. Idk but to me, it seems like whem Edelgard became emperor, she attacked the church or Holy Kingdom in her quest to destroy the Crests, and probably killed enough people that Dimitri finally broke. After all it's a long way to fall from "No moral is worth taking a life, and i remember every single person i see die." To "Kill every last one of them!"

After beating all the routes, i was pretty shocked at how close I was to the actual plot. I wasnt expecting them to be related, or for him breaking to be related to something she did in the past, but overall i was about 90% on the nose lol. I swear I didn't read any leaks or anything, just obsessively watched the trailers and got really lucky in Heroes lol

I suppose it's possible Dimitri could become a kind of villain, but I really doubt it, especially given that he'll have his own story where Byleth supports him. At worst, I expect him to be mostly an anti-hero. Something to keep in mind is that there's a non-zero possibility that the cutscenes and voice lines we've seen and heard are cherry-picked from different story paths, and won't be the same for all three of the available routes. Note also that during the trailer, we can hear Dimitri decidedly taking a stand to *stop* "this cycle of the strong oppressing the weak." In the Treehouse gameplay that was shown today, we learned that the crests we've been hearing about since the first trailer tie directly in to a person's power, and their ability to wield certain weapons, and that some people resent that. In other words, having more crests and more status is literally equal to having more power. We know Edelgard seems to think "the crests are to blame," so it makes perfect sense that Dimitri will feel the same.

I'll honestly take any of them being more villainous or even all of them being morally ambiguous. It makes the game fun when there truly is more than one path with very solid reasoning! Can't believe everyone though Dimitri was going to become evil when Edelgard was standing there all along. I guess it comes down to appearance. Dimitri (after he mellowed out) wasn't actually as scary as he looked whereas Edelgard always had this disciplined and regal air about her. She always presented herself with dignity even when doing evil things. It's funny because a lot of the traits ascribed to Dimitri here were actually traits of Edelgard.

The way his bio says "a faint shadow can be felt behind his cheeriness" makes me believe that he might have has a very rough past, but he keeps all of his pent up emotions behind happiness so that he can become a good leader. I'm guessing that there must be an event before the time skip that makes him snap, causing him to turn berserk and go crazy, something like a betrayal, or what I'm assuming; an assassination and massacre that he was a part of in some way.

My theory: Edelgard - The Misguided Heroine who becomes a puppet of the church without her noticing that she is manipulated. Dimitri - The Misunderstood Hero who is going against the church but lost his sanity because of probably betrayal. Seeing how Dimitri looked like he was betrayed really took a toll on him and made him less trusting and made his heart harden even more. Claude - Honestly he is giving the "Protagonist Hero" vibe which is like a Corrin but with better writing and personality. The story doesn't exactly revolve under Byleth but the three Lords and siding with Claude will probably be like the Revelations equivalent of three houses. He will be the leader to unite all houses and Byleth is only like a side character who helps Claude achieve that goal of peace.

Byleth looks for me like a voice of reason for all the students, maybe without the guidance of their teacher they would lose sight of what's the right thing to do, I doubt that any lord Byleth goes with will have trust issues with him... Hmmm I hope not! I think that would be kind of unfair to pit one house as more "noble" or "worthy" than the other two or make it obvious that there's "one right choice." I also think it would be more interesting to see Claude, with all his good intentions and selfless personality, become drained as he is forced to pick between two shitty choices (potentially with a third choice that maybe ain't that great either) and also commit unspeakable acts for the sake of his friends and allies. He seems overprotective of his friends and allies to a fault, and that could be an interesting weakness for him as Edelgard and Dimitri, his former friends, become more and more unhinged.

I think that Dimitri is one of the few sane characters in Three Houses. He is the only one who becomes terribly affected and shellshocked by war. The others, however, all remain normal, perhaps slightly more serious, but otherwise the same. He always fought for the same objective over the years (to appease those he lost), but he initially didn’t want to bring harm to anyone if it wasn’t necessary. Eventually, he loses all will to live and decides to press on solely to defeat his nemesis- Edelgard. The only reason for this, however, is because the lines of sanity were blurred in his eyes. Dimitri is not a villain; rather, he is just a lost soul with a broken heart.

Then you have the leaks mentioning that Dimitri's family was massacred, with him being the only one to have survived such an ordeal. While we have no word on who killed his family, if he actually *witnessed* their deaths, that'd explain a lot about his drastic change in character (PTSD?).

When Dimitri says "we must end this cycle of the strong trampling the weak", he was probably referring to the Church of Seiros doing... evil things. He probably rebelled against them, but they tried to get rid of him somehow. Maybe they tried to assassinate him and that's when he lost his eye. Or maybe they drove him out of the throne but some of his vassals remained loyal to him. In both cases he would probably want to take his revenge against the Church.

I always took the "shadow" remark as hinting to a tragic past that still weighs on him. So instead of asking what happened in those 5 years, I find myself asking what was the straw that broke the pegasus's back. I have a feeling the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus is a Rigel of sorts, and Dimitri is a victim of that. He doesn't seem evil, just like something happened to push his ideals to the extreme, or at least break him. We can't really tell who's right or wrong just based off this trailer, but I am leaning towards Edelgard and Dimitri being most at odds. We can pick up from their quotes in the trailer that Edel might have become what the divine seiros was. She's ruthless if anything; doesn't feel much destroying those who get in her way. Meanwhile Dimitri and his kingdom was a victim to her ideals one way or another.

I wouldn't say his rough appearance is "evil" per se. If anything, he feels like the Alm of this game and Faerghus seems to resemble Rigel. Drawn to power out of necessity, rather than greed. Perhaps this is a sort of way of uniting the fanbase, by making each character resemble the personalities of popular heroes. Or perhaps that's just wishful thinking

I think that Dimitri is actually going to war against Adrestia since the church seems to be evil and Edelgard is aiding the church. Dimitri the Empire’s actions as the strong trampling the weak while Edelgard mentions something about a false sense of justice (most likely talking about the church or Dimitri). Seeing as the way things are I can see the routes going like. *1. Black Eagles Route:* You will be at war with Dimitri, and possibly fight Claude if he attempts to stop the two of you. After defeating them, you realize that the church was evil and face them, or “The ones who slither” will be conspiring against the church underneath their noses, and cause whatever incidents that resulting in Dimitri’s actions. *2. Blue Lions Route:* Something happens that causes Dimitri to go the path he has taken, even if it means going to war with his former love interest and close friend. Having besting the other kingdoms, you fight the church. But it turns out that the church wasn’t to blame, but rather “the ones who slither.” Meaning that possibly killing two of your close companions had no meaning at all. Defeat them and live a somewhat happy ever after. *3. Golden Deer Route:* Dimitri & Edelgard are fighting, so Claude comes in to try and resolve the violence, with violence (cause you know, this is Fire Emblem). After successfully kicking both of their tales you help them see the error of their ways and the end their bloody feud. Only for the true enemy to be revealed, THE ONES WHO SLITHER! Crush them with the power of friendship and Claude’s good looks and then everyone goes out to celebrate the end of the war!

See I don’t think the Holy Kingdom of Fargus is as closely tied as you or others think. I believe at one point they may have been but I think it’s the empire who is. My guess is that at one point the church was very benevolent and not corrupt. They had the best interests of everyone at heart and these crests had something to do with making sure people were ok. The kingdom was in favor of this and helped out by having some of their knights become church protectors. Despite this Seros and the church had strong connection to the empire and would become an intergalactic part of their ruling family lineage. At one point in the past the church became more corrupt and this caused a sect in the kingdom to break away and hold fast to the original message of the church while this new sect that took over was more corrupt and not as benevolent, distrusting the crests but would use them if it benefited them. This leads is to the events of the game where Edgelord is holding true to the new sect’s teachings while Dimitri is holding fast to the old sect’s teachings. I’m assuming that Edgelord is the “evil” one/a “bad guy” seeing as she is the leader of an empire (already a bad start in a FE game), she is associated with red (again empire leaders and red in FE isn’t a good sign), plus she very much gives of more totalitarian vibes than the others and if any give off evil vibes it’s her. Though I think she believes she is doing bad things for an good outcome (SHE not Dimitri is going to be the ends justify the means person). What probably happens is that a Edgelord tried to stamp out the crests and did so in a “strong trampling the weak” kind of way while Dimitri tried to stop her and ended up like he is now. See in FE games if there is an evil church there is a good one to counter it so the church we have been shown is evil then I’m guessing there is a good sect that holds true to what the church originally taught and wanted and that sect is associated with the Holy Kingdom of Fargus. I know this is mostly speculation but it’s my guess so far

I'm thinking during the time skip before the young Lord's became rulers the Empire and Kingdom go to war. During the war the kingdom gets thrashed Dimitri's family gets wiped out and he somehow gets the Empore but loses his eye. The remants of the kingdom are now rebels hence the beat up Bandit almost look he has going on. Edilgad now has to take up the empires reigns and feels trapped in this ongoing conflict (her people want revenge for the death) hence her speech may be a bit to herself. The City states try to step in to stop the fighting but only end up getting drawn into the fighting.

I think the shadow is that he knew what the church was doing and remember there is currently a rebellion in Fahrgus from Ashe's dad , and then the church intiated war against the kingdom which led to Dimitri having to fight a war which led to him looking like a angery mess, and the "kill every last one of them" could just be referring to soldiers of the church

I think you're missing a few things. You kinda see them but it doesn't register. You noted Dimitri's armor as beaten and battered and contributed it to the climate of Faergus. But Faergus was always cold, why would it change after five years of the same cold. Also consider that, before the in game time skip, Ashe's father rebels against the Holy Kingdom. Perhaps the Kingdom is losing popularity. My theory is that the Kingdom of Faergus either kicks Dimitri out or falls from rebellions, hence why he wears what could be considered "barbarian armor." There is a key line in the trailer from Dimitri that is of him saying "someone must stop this cycle of the strong trampling the weak." The line is said while a silhouette chokes another silhouette. These silhouettes look like members of "those who slither in the dark." Maybe Dimitri sides with them to try and overthrow the church while Edelgard, who says that she must eliminate those who cling to false ideals of justice, fights against him, trying to stop him from hurting those in the church. Her armor is much more regal. Meanwhile, I think Claude has some kind of shadow of his own since he says himself that he isn't someone to trust. I think he'll have his own intriguing story, however all I see now is that he might be caught between the two sides. I certainly hope he rises to his own goals, but I haven't thought enough about where he's going to go.

I think the views of the different characters reflects the countries they go back to during the 5 year gap. Demitri wants to end the strong trampling the weak because the holy kingdom of fargus is a country where the weak are squashed. Like Britannia in code geass for example.
