Eden Hazard was amongst the best players in the Premier League, and by association, the world, at Chelsea. A record transfer took him to Real Madrid. But he could never come close to the form showed at Stamford Bridge.
Why was that? What happened to Eden Hazard at Real Madrid?
Recollected by Seb Stafford-Bloor, illustrated by Craig Silcock.

People compare him to DeBruyne and Salah but Eden was basically the whole offence for Chelsea (played CM,LW and CF in the same game) and only had 1.5 seasons of Diego Costa out of 6-7 seasons.

a lot of these comments still don't get it; Hazard pretty much suffered a career-ending (recurring) injury in that 2019 PSG game. Even though he played after that, he's pretty much been handicapped by that injury. If you've ever suffered an injury and play sports, you sub-consciously try to avoid further injury in the same area. And this results in being unable to play at the desired level or style that you normally could.

Exactly. Imagine knowing you can do more, but your body refuses to do what you want. It's like reaching for a bottle, and your arm just can't raise enough to get it. After his injury, he subconsciously started to avoid the contact he had suffered earlier. I remember those days during the pandemic. He actually played great on some days. But the damage to his psyche and body was far too much...

And you obviously don’t get it, because most of the injuries he obtained were completely unrelated to the ankle in the 19/20 season. They were knocks to the knees, and a bunch of recurring muscle injuries in the thighs and hamstrings. If you have any statement from medical personel that those injuries are related to the ankle I would like to see it. Secondly, when he came on he played poorly, and if that was because he wanted to avoid injury then he did a terrible job of it as he was the one who sustained the highest amount of them in the entire squad

What you don't get is that Tifo is exaggerating Hazard's performance in that November. Hazard at that time wasn't amazing or even good he was just alright. Madrid fans were just happy that he had gone from playing poorly to playing half decently. So while yes the injury did cause him to play cautiously there isn't enough to say that he was on a trend to play amazing before said injury. His fans just use that injury as a convenient excuse while ignoring how bad to mediocre he was before it.

What people don’t mention is Hazard is fine and content with this. He was the best player in the premier league for years, was Belgiums captain and carried them in 2018. Any other footballer would’ve talked to press and given lukaku type interviews. He posts online like once a year, i doubt he will mention this until years down the line. As a Belgian I followed the whole story and it seems that plate in his ankle that was mentioned caused repetitive injuries and had to be removed. Before that, every time he started playing again, trying to get back at his level, he was plagued with injuries Unfortunately for Hazard, after he removed the plate and had a chance to recover his level, Vinicius exploded and there was no room for him anymore. I still have to say that in the last World Cup despite the weak performance of Belgium, he was one of those who performed the best. With his injuries healed, I'm sure he still have football in him.

The timing of this video is perfect. I've always enjoyed watching Eden Hazard play unbelievably well in his Chelsea Prime, and was one of the players that got me interested in the sport as I grew up. It's a shame Injuries keep happening at such a high rate for him. I've seen fake rumours of him being linked at my club, but i'm afraid that if he did come and play, the same frequency in injuries would just keep going. It's a shame. I loved Hazard as a player, it's a shame he's no longer the player he once was...

Before i even watch the video it’s simple. Injuries is what happened. it sounds cliche now but people need to remember before the PSG game he was finally starting to find his feet and that game was a testament to that. After he got injured and had the ankle plate in, madrid doctors left it in a year more than they should have which weakened surrounding muscles which is why he kept constantly getting injured afterwards. hazard also spoke of the psychological impact this had. when people say it’s his lack of hard work it annoys me a lot because a player of that quality doesn’t need to be the hardest worker to succeed.

Eden Hazard is an old fashioned footballer. He would have thrived even more in the 70's or 80's, where footballers could still drink or smoke. Hazard was lazy during training at Chelsea due to being the main man. And he had never built a physical core. So when he joined at madrid, where he doesn't have special treatment during training meant he had to train hard he always got injured because his body is never used to it. Even Obi mikel said he was the laziest player he ever trained with but during matchday he would unleash his magic.

Most of us madridistas weren't really angry but actually quite sad when we saw the unlimited amount of injuries he was suffering. This was his childhood dream and we saw it after we won the 14's champions league during the celebration : he wanted to be part of the team and he actually brought good vibes ! Yet Vinicius was now an incredible footballer and he couldn't find his place again, entering now as Benzema's replacement which wasn't optimal for him... Spain's media and specialy Pedrerol have always been more about the show than about the truth. Yet comparing him to Hazard is a crime against a real legend of the club !!!

Lazy trainers like Hazard rarely also take care of their bodies like an professional athelete should and that leads to more injuries. Or poor recovery from them. That statement "when I'm on holiday, I'm on holiday" speaks volumes. I'm not saying one needs to be as obsessed with training and body maintenance as Cristiano Ronaldo but there is certain physical level. A level that Hazard has never been that bothered to maintain. These rumours are all the way from when he played at Lille.

I agree that Bale gave a lot to Real, but to say he had a team 'on his back' is a joke. Scoring a few goals in finals - some of which were lucky goals when the ball accidentally landed at Bal's feet (during UCL final with Liverpool for example) - while sitting on the bench for seasons, years, is not 'carrying a team on your back'. There have been players in this team who have been tearing themselves apart all year, season after season, and their contributions have always been high - they 'carried' the team on their backs, not Bale. So I agree that comparing Hazard to Bale is a misunderstanding and stupid thing to do, but it's also not okay to exaggerate the other side - Bale never 'carried a team on his back', ever. He contributed important goals, yes, but he was never the one who consistently worked hard, season after season, and gave huge contributions. To say this about Bale is unfair to other big players who really did all the hard work season after season, not sitting on the bench.

I think Eden Hazard will retire from professional football, if he does not receive any offers from the MLS, or the Saudi League.... His body is tired, and bruised by these injuries, his career rests on an extraordinary talent, unfortunately when you arrive at Real Madrid with extra pounds, that you have never been serious in training, you end up paying for your bad habits, Eto'o warned him in 2013.

@@GOATZELWARDBANDWAGON. Better than Aguero, Kane and Alexis Sanchez in 2014/15? No chance. Chelsea won the title for having the best defence, which isn't something Hazard ever contributed much to, and the Fabregas-Costa combination up top. Pretty much the same for 16/17 too as Hazard scored as much as Bournemouth's Joshua King to tie for 8th in the scoring charts. The same position he ended in the scoring charts in 18/19 when you say he was the best attacker. Statistics do not support the claim that Hazard was the best in the PL. Especially if we break it down to non penalty goals and assists per 90. Never mind that DeBruyne has really been the best overall player in the Premier League since his arrival.

as a chelsea fan as I was happy with selling him because anyone who was actually watching him knew his time was up, his retirement comes as no surprise to me, I wanted him to stay at chelsea merely to be a mentor, but even though footballers technically reach their peak 26-28 Hazard peaked from like 23-25, he wasn’t that great at free kicks, and although a penalty merchant, his skill set relied on his speed, dribbling, and scoring and by the time he was 28 he just wasn’t as strong or explosive, in his last season at chelsea it made sense to me to sell him before he regressed any further and I knew he wasn’t go to do well at Madrid, who on earth would actually expect a 5’8 29 year old speedster to retain their speed and effectiveness at that age?
