Yup, 54 points so far this season, 52 points at this stage last season. Even though they play 4 fewer games than other top leagues, those point totals over the past 3 seasons are pretty low to win titles. They haven't been going particularly well for years.

It's not just that. The football is extremely underwhelming. Boring, spiritless football, random goals scored because of individual class while being extremely leaky in defence. Players are not developing and have been out of form for months. And to - no disrespect - potentially go out to Lazio in the CL is just ridiculous. I am not saying it is all Tuchels fault but big changes need to be made. He needs to go and at least half a dozen players too.

Bayern is still in the UCL. As far as I remember. And I only believe that they didn't win the Bundesliga when the referee blows the whistle! Bayern has come back so many times. And they have the s.c. _"Bayern-Dusel"_ on their side. And Leverkusen has their nickname _"Vizekusen/Neverkusen"_ for a reason. Both phenomenons even have their on English Wikipedia article!

Bayern aren't really much worse than previous seasons if you look at points and goal differential, it's just that leverkusen are having a historic season. Leverkusen's current point total is higher than basically all of Bayerns league winning tallies at this point in the season.

I know it will sound strange but Bayern Munich's decline started in the 18/19 season under Kovac. Bayern were awful under Kovac and yet barely retained their Bundesliga title because Dortmund per usual collapse in the end. Bayern Munich won the sextuple the following season when Flick took over near the halfway point where Leipzig was leading the Bundesliga. Since then Bayern Munich had many infighting between the players, managers and board and puzzling transfer dealings that failed to replace key players from their 2020 dominance. Apart from Sane, Kane and Kim Min Jae. The rest were either poor or joined Bayern Munich at the wrong time. Last season Bayern Munich were lucky to retain their Bundesliga crown because Dortmund yet again failed miserably to win on the final day but now that Leverkusen stepped up their game after battling for survival when Alonso, Bayern Munich are falling apart and this was coming since Kovac was in charge. Years of complacency and failing to address their in house problems has finally caught up on them and the fallout is there for the world to see.

Finally the correct analysis. Everybody thought with the CL, and all the titles in 2020, that everything was perfect. In many ways, this season, as ironic it sounds, was more poison than a blessing. I say this as a Bayern Munich fan myself, it blinded us. And made us immiatedly forget our already existing structural issues.

Sane and Kim Min Jae? Sane is currently playing his third bad second half of a season in a row. Kim is currently nowhere near the world class level that everyone expected he is, considering that he was regarded as one of the best transfers in summer. Kane has played a world class first half of the season and is now slowly adapting to the rest of the team, as you could see in some of his latest performances. The teams core needs to be completely exchanged. Goretzka, Kimmich, Gnabry... they were overrated due to overperforming for a while, they have played bad for over 2 seasons now.

They are bad. Because Bayern normally wants to play good attractive football while also winning competitions. And they do this by winning important games. In this season, they play really unattractive football, they mostly rely on individual qualities instead of a team effort and they failed to win any important games (DFB Pokal game against Saarbrücken, Champions League first leg against Lazio, 2nd game against Leverkusen and all recent games). And their form seemingly is only trending downwards.

Here's a take: Nothing's actually gone wrong for bayern, compared to the top teams in Europe top leagues they are actually performing decently. The issue is that somehow we've gotten used to Bayern winning the Bundesliga every season. And we act like it's the end of the world if the team is in second. Bayern has dominated for the past decade, which honestly makes the league a bother to watch or we all know they win it at the end. Let's also give Bayer Leverkusen the credit they deserve, they have been absolutely amazing and rightfully deserve the league this season. Any other year bayern would probably still be top of the league even with their current performances. It just shows how exceptional bayer leverkusen have been.

@@senseiwu763 I don't think it was a "nobrainer". I share the sentiment that in general Tuchel is/was the slightly better coach in a vacuum. If both were available at the same time, without any context and none of them already working for the club, I'd see why Bayern would go for the more experienced Tuchel. But they likely sacked Nagelsmann for personality reasons and then got someone who is very easily triggered by questions from the press and seems to hold an image of arrogance around his players at times. They sacked Nagelsmann because they were afraid of not winning any titles, but then only won one extremely lucky Bundesliga trophy thanks to Dortmund bottling it and a last minute winner from Musiala. Nagelsmann had a 2.31 points per game average with a team that lagged a striker after Lewandowski's departure. Tuchel got 200 million worth of players including Kane and only has a 2.02 average - the second worst average in 30 years, barely better than Klinsmann's. Nagelsmann also was still able to win all major titles last season, including the Champions League after eight straight wins, including seven of them to nothing. Nagelsmann's sacking cost Bayern at least 40 million Euro, plus 12 million salary per year for Tuchel, plus a few millions for staff. Take those roughly 70 million to this day and add the 120 million for Kane and 50 million for Kim and 30 million for Boey and you end up with a quarter billion invested, yet the results are worse. I'm pretty sure that Nagelsmann would have done just as well as Tuchel without that quarter billion spent. In that regard, I'm not sure that it was a "nobrainer".

As an American, jokes and memes about Tottenham and Harry Kane aside, it's actually super refreshing to see someone other than Bayern win. Just the fact Bayern wins every year makes the Bundesliga unwatchable. It's very refreshing to see Leverkusen so close to finishing the race. I've had European expats as coworkers and they wanted to gauge my interest in watching UEFA leagues, and France, Spain, Italy, and Germany just don't have the same parity as England did until recently. Imagine my surprise when they told me that Serie A was the top league in the 90s. All I've ever known has been Juventus every single year.

For years players at Bayern have been complaining about not being appreciated, and some have left because of that. This just tells that something is wrong in the management, and considering how Kahn and Brazzo were fired, I doubt the problem was with them. I have been a close Bayern fan for years, and it just hurts to see the 'family feeling' leave more and more. Sure, Bayern has been mainly a business for years before that already, but it still somehow felt like a family. That is gone for good now.

Bayern’s problem is slowly going to the direction of Manchester United. However, before things worsen even further, they need to immediately sign a coach that can work alongside the managerial team (yet still ignoring the fact that they need to give the coach time to) and if there’s any name that might suit such a description, it would be Valverde. the answer is relatively simpler than people are making it out to be. when a team so thoroughly dominates a league that for a decade no one comes on top, every part of the machine, each cog becomes complacent and careless. The coaches think they can experiment because "it's just Wolfsburg/darmstadt/random third league team", the players feel like they're going through the motions because "we'll win one trophy anyways" and BTS management believes that putting in the bare minimum is okay because "we are Bayern Munich"

My take is: Nagelsmann noticed that his playing style didn't work and then he made the team more pragmatic. That wasn't good enough for the bosses and Tuchel was free(but maybe not available after the season) so they tried to get him during the season. But Tuchel is also a very pragmatic coach and relies more on individual quality than a specific playing style. Therefore not much changed, the games were mostly onesided but very controlled and not enthusiastic or pretty. So the points were his only upside and everytime he lost or drew, he couldn't defend their game. That was worsened by his obvious feud with many journalists, newspapers and experts. But the worst part is Leverkusen, who denied him any easy gameweek.

I pretty much agree, but your take is kind of missing that everything actually got worse with Tuchel. Less goals scored per game, more goals conceded per game, less points per game. Not to mention (even) more unrest amongs players. Sacking Nagelsmann was a gigantic mistake. I'm amazed that it has taken this long for most people to come around to the realization that Tuchel doesn't fit Bayern. It was very obvious within the first month.

I'd say it's a combination of a few small, and probably relatively easily fixable factors that have resulted in this drop of quality. Tuchel is a great coach, but I'm not certain his playing style necessarily suits Bayern. The backroom staff issues are most likely the biggest problem, and could take a few years to get running smoothly again. Beyond that there are a few things noticeable on the pitch too, like the lack of a solid defence, especially a proper RB, and the team relying on Kane for goals too much. The biggest thing, though, is definitely the fact that Leverkusen are genuinely a very, very good team this season, with or without the problems in Munich, which amplifies all issues.

Thoroughly beaten against Arsenal, Brentford, the Real 1st leg, and a mauling from Leeds and Southampton. Additionally, playing some of the worst football I’ve seen at Chelsea. Roman’s Chelsea was about silverware so it’s best to not conflate that with Chelsea under Boehly. Reaching 2 cup finals isn’t anything remarkable for Chelsea under Roman. However, Tuchel was admittedly good at getting the Chelsea team up for knockout games. Tuchel did have issues with Abramovich’s board particularly about Lukaku though that information is irrelevant seeing he came to Chelsea with a problematic reputation already and has done nothing since to change it. The main problem is still cohesion. Their is zero cohesion between the board and manager. The incoming manager will need to immediately use the talent the squad has (aging or overpaid aside) while Freund and Eberl supplement that group with players that will develop and grow, but can also contribute now without the massive egos attached. Zaragoza is a prime example. Tel, Musiala are amazing talents and should be built around and Pavlovic is making a name for himself as well. The way we've used De Ligt has been been shambolic considering he is a leader and the backline sorely needs one.

In 2013, Jupp heynckes made bayern munich champions league winner, and they also became the first german club to win the treble. Roberto di matteo guided chelsea to their first ever champions league crown in 2012. Yet, hardly anyone would consider these people as elite coaches. Even though it is not a bad season considering the points in the Bundesliga, it could become a trophy less one, which in Bayern terms is unacceptable. However, I doubt that the coach or the sporting managers are accountable, since multiple changes in either role did not have the desired impact. Something within the team is either missing or interfering with the Bayern mentality of having success no matter what, which reflects on the performance on the pitch. I do not think that I have ever experienced a Bayern squad having two consecutive matches without a shot on target.

I think it demonstrates the main problem with modern football, when competitiveness in a league is viewed as a crisis period for a club. But one time I had a tougher season, a couple of defeats, 8th in the table halfway through the season. I thought - I've done so much for them, we can let go of the league title this season, and rebuild, come back stronger next year. No, I was sacked. Then I took over another club and I was even better, and my old club, it was slipping into mediocrity. If you win the league title 11 years in a row, then let yourself breathe by not winning the 12th. Bayern will be back.

When BM wins, the team seems to score high; losing games reflect very low scores. This tells me that something is not right. Can we lay the problem at the feet of a coach who seems not to trust the quality of some of his players? And how effective for the remainder of the season can BM be with a coach when ALL know that the end of the season is the end of his coaching at BM?

And that exit from UCL was really humiliating. But overall I think it's good for the league. It was becoming boring and too predictable.

People believe that in competitive sports the hardest part is finishing first, but it isn't. The hardest part is keeping it once you've got it. The people (or teams) in second place have something to aim for - like the carrot in front of a horse. You do not have this luxury when you are in first place. You have to give 100% every time, because those behind you are chomping at the bit. In the case of Bayern, they are still the best team on paper, but they just happen to be losing to a team which works well together. Sacking Tuchel because of Leverkusen's success is one of the dumbest business moves I've seen in a long time.
